Teabox “The First Flush Box" May 2018 Review

Each Teabox comes with an insert elaborating on the month's theme and the teas included. I love their enthusiasm and passion for each month's theme!

This month's box also included vibrant, colorful postcards. They included them to "help give a better picture of where these wonders come from." They're stunning. It was such a thoughtful, empowering touch for Teabox to include these in this month's box.

Each blend in this box weighed 0.35 oz., which means you get about 4 cups of tea out of each bag.

Glenburn Classic Spring Green Tea, 0.35 oz. – Retail Value $3.00

This was a bit of a dull-tasting flavor to start the box with! There weren't many standout flavors in this one, but, as its list of aromas suggested, it definitely tasted very earthy. It was almost like tasting a wet blend of leafy greens and subtle vegetables. I've tried many green teas before, and this unfortunately just didn't have enough flavor for my liking. I think it could be a great introductory green tea, however!

Burnside Classic Spring Green Tea, 0.35 oz. – Retail Value $3.00

This tea's packaging said its aroma would be "toasty and vegetal, marked by notes of charred greens and tobacco," and that is an entirely accurate description! I only needed 1 tsp. of this tea blend to steep for a short amount of time. The resulting flavor wasn't too strong, but it gave off an enveloping feeling of smoky warmth and spice! I can totally see cozying up with this tea on crisp spring mornings. It would start the morning on a calm, rejuvenating note.

Oaks Special Spring Chinary Black Tea, 0.35 oz. – Retail Value $3.00

This tea also had a strong, earthy flavor, although it wasn't as "damp-tasting" as the Glenburn Classic Spring Green tea was. It has a bit more brightness to it with a hint of warm spices at the end, which I loved! There's a strong body and presence of flavors to this black tea, with a delicate balance of earthy and spicy notes all at once. I could drink it all day long—it feels so, so energizing!

Giddapahar Classic Spring Chinary Black Tea, 0.35 oz. – Retail Value $3.00

This tea started off very subtle, but the more I thought about what I was tasting, I could totally sense the flavor of sweet green peas that was called out on the packaging! It has a delicate, slightly vegetal taste to it. I say that very positively—I could totally see drinking this when I was feeling nauseous, as its subtle veggie flavors and overall mellow effect is very calming! I really enjoyed this one.

Temi Spring Clonal Black Tea, 0.35 oz. – Retail Value $3.00

This was the most vibrant-colored brew of the box! I smelled a lot of spearmint in the aroma even though it wasn't listed on the packaging, strangely enough! This tea has a complex combination of flavors—it tastes earthy on one sip, and by the aftertaste, you're left with a full-bodied, wooden flavor that seems to drift in and out. It was very interesting! Overall, I would have loved to taste more of the hint of lemon in this tea. I think that citrusy sweetness would have really kicked this tea's flavor profile up a notch.

Verdict: The entire concept of the "first flush" had me giddy to try every tea in the box. It felt like a sacred, momentous occasion to sample such elevated tea blends plucked fresh in their prime! And, despite the fact that many of this month's blends had similar flavor profiles, each tea felt like a new experience. The Oaks Special Spring Chinary Black Tea was my favorite, with the Burnside Classic Spring Green Tea coming in at a close second. This month's Teabox was a great introduction to earthy flavors and ingredients. I've always been a hardcore floral tea fan, but the First Flush certainly opened up my palette to exploring new types of teas!
