Snack Crate April 2018 Review
This box always greets you with a colorful card, and talks you through every snack to be found in the subscription! This month’s box is The Netherlands, and I can’t wait to learn more about the area and its snacks.
There’s also an awesome bonus in each box: stickers! They’re always usually really funny, and I adore the lion riding a bike on this month’s variety.

Daelman’s Stroopwafel - Buy an 8-pack for $3.99
I’ve read about Stroopwafel before, but this is my first experience with this treat! I’m an absolute cookie fiend, and since I’m not a huge chocolate person, I’m always on the lookout for desserts that are sweet, satisfying, and aren’t choco-tastic. I took the book’s advice and placed this on top of a cup of coffee before consuming; the heat from my joe warmed up and softened the caramel a bit, making for an amazing overall experience! The cinnamon is the star ingredient here; it adds some flavor without being overwhelming and making the cookie even heartier.
Rademaker Hopjes - Buy 2, 7oz. packages for $12.45
I’ve actually been lucky enough to have tried an American version of coffee caramels, but these Hopjes are so. much. better! They’re rich, but not too sweet, and even though I personally like how hard the caramel is, anyone with any kind of braces or dental work will definitely want to stay away. As they melt in your mouth, they get sticky! The flavor is a nice mix of java and caramel both, resulting in an overall taste of sweetened coffee with a rich brown sugar edge. At just .2% coffee each, I’m not sure they offer much caffeine, but I liked them so much I immediately made sure I could buy a bag online.
Lay’s Patatje Joppie Chips - Retail Value $2.67 USD
I’m definitely a chips kind of person, and trying new flavors is always so much fun! I thought for sure that these would be super-intense and maybe a little unpleasant, but they’re actually flavorful and delicious. These boast flavors of onion, curry, mayo, and mustard, which sounded like an interesting combo on paper, but they translated so well in real flavor. I thought they tasted a lot like deviled eggs or potato salad; my husband thought they tasted a bit like a club sandwich. We both agreed that they’re great! Deli foods are a huge hit in my household, and I think these chips would be so good with a burger, hot dog, or other cookout goods.
Smoeltjes UFO’s - Buy a box for $2.91 USD
My love for cookies was sated again with these interesting treats! I liked the texture of these; the cookie itself has a nice crumble without being too dry, and the chocolate middle had a nice thickness. I also liked the candy covered chocolate bits on the outside, too! They added a festive pop of color and a little bit more visual interest which you don’t always see in a sweet snack.
Cote d’Or Reep Melk - Buy a 3-pack for $2.29
Even though chocolate isn’t my go-to for dessert, I don’t dislike it; in fact, I find myself enjoying milk chocolate quite a bit these days when I am occasionally in the mood. From a famed Belgian chocolate brand, this was rich and not waxy, like some chocolate bars I’ve had before. I’m a sucker for hazelnut anything, and the flavor was strong with a nice sprinkling of nuts.
Zure Matjes - Buy 9.7 oz bag for $12.65 USD
Fruity or gummy candy isn’t always my thing, but I have such a soft spot for anything sour - it reminds me so much of the required candy buffet at a serious sleepover! These candies were shaped like cut ribbons and were definitely sour, which I actually kind of love. They were also balanced with a bit of sweetness, and even though it did taste like candy, the strawberry flavor wasn’t overly fake and didn’t taste like there were artificial ingredients.
Verdict: This was one of my favorite Snack Crates to date! I love seeing a country through the eyes of its treats, and there was an awesome mix of things I’ve been wanting to try, things I already liked, and things I didn’t know I would enjoy so much. I really loved the stroopwafel, it’s one of my new favorite sweets; those chips were a slam dunk, and the coffee-caramel Hopjes were an awesome take on a candy I was already familiar with. A lot these treats seemed to be really exclusive to the Netherlands and hard to find here in the States, which also added to the overall experience.
