Scentbird is a perfume subscription where you choose one fragrance per month. They offer a variety of authentic designer scents and allow you to narrow down by either traditional categories for notes (e.g., floral, woody, spicy, etc.) or more general descriptive terms (e.g., mysterious, classic, flirty). Subscribers also receive a monthly discount code that can be used on full-size bottles of perfume or cologne from the Scentbird shop.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Scentbird for Women May 2018 Review

This month, I received Scentbird's “Scent of the Month.” You can either opt for the scent of the month or you can fill a queue with fragrances of your choosing:

There was what is basically an advertising flyer for this month’s scent, Kenneth Cole for Her.

Your fragrance is typically packaged in a cardboard tube, but every now and then you may get a new vial like this. These come in several colors although the ones I receive seem to mostly be red.

Kenneth Cole for Her – Estimated Value $10.40 (buy 1.7 fl oz for $65)

I’m not always a fan of the scent of the month and I did like last month, so I didn’t have a lot of hope for this month (I seem to enjoy about one in every three of these), but I was pleasantly surprised. This does have some floral notes (including heliotrope, pink peony, jasmine, lily of the valley, and violet) but it also has ambrette (a plant source of musk-like fragrance), actual musk, sandalwood, carrot seeds, and lemon. I am fairly certain it’s the musky notes and sandalwood that are doing it for me here, and I can’t really pick out the carrot seeds. This isn’t something I would reach for every day but when I am in the mood for something a bit more floral (hey, it happens), this could easily become a go-to.

Verdict: The estimated value of my fragrance this month is $10.40, which is below the cost of the subscription. This often seems to be the case for the scent of the month. However, you do have the option to fill up your queue with higher-value fragrances if you’re looking for the most bang for your buck. At any rate, I was not previously familiar with this fragrance and there were some aspects of it I really liked, and there is value in that, as well.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, all you have to do is choose this fragrance for your queue.

Value Breakdown: This subscription is $14.95/monthly and this month, I received $10.40 worth of fragrance (but again, this is highly variable based on what scent you receive).

Scentbird does not send extra cases for free to regular subscribers. You get one on your first month, and after that they are $12.95 to purchase.

I’ve been a subscriber for a couple years and I am overrun with extra cases. They send me a new, red case every few months.

Back when I used to pay to subscribe, I did randomly get extra ones. I suppose that could’ve changed as it’s been a year or more.

I subscribed earlier this year, and I could have sworn that I read on their site that they send one every 6 months. Since I was only subbed for 3 months I didn’t see if that was true.
