Pur Cosmetics Mystery Grab Bag May 2018 Review

Blending Crease Brush

Blending Crease Brush - Retail Value $18

This is a basic blending brush. The bristles are soft and did a good job of blending out eyeshadows, but I probably wouldn’t pay $18 for a brush of this quality.

Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick in Fever,

Velvet Matte Liquid Lipstick in Fever, Full-Size! Retail Value $18

When Pur says this is a velvet matte, they were not kidding! This genuinely felt velvet-smooth on my lips, and one coat was all it took for even application on my lips. Sometimes dark colors like this can be patchy, but I didn’t have that problem. This is a little vampy for my everyday style, but when the mood strikes I will definitely reach for this. The staying power could be better for a liquid lip, but it still lasts for a long time and the comfort in wearing it makes up for it.

Chrome Glaze High-Shine Lip Gloss in Heartbreaker,

Chrome Glaze High-Shine Lip Gloss in Heartbreaker, Full-Size! Retail Value $18

I am not a big lip gloss fan, and this formula is a bit too sticky for my liking. I did appreciate the shine it packed though, and the baby-doll pink color works really well. If I was a lipstick girl I would probably reach for this quite often, as it really does pack a shiny punch.

Here are the swatches of the two lippies.

Pur x Boxycharm Eyeshadow Palette,

Pur x Boxycharm Eyeshadow Palette - Retail Value $36

When I first pulled this out of the box, I was a bit bummed to see something so familiar—that is, until I remembered I didn’t actually get the March Boxycharm, so I didn’t already own this palette. I really like it! I feel like this palette can make multiple looks and has a good mix of standard and fun colors.

Here are the swatches!

Volume Vixen Mascara,

Volume Vixen Mascara, Full-Size! Retail Value $21

I was pleasantly surprised with this mascara. I was able to build up fluffy lashes without clumping, and I felt like I was able to reach each lash with the brush. If I had one complaint it would be that the formula felt a bit dry so I needed to use more coats to get the look I was going for.

Here is a tutorial for the look I did using this box:

After applying a base of eyeshadow primer, I applied Purfect all over my lid.

Next, I took ATL to the outer corner of my eyelids and blended in small circles until the color was spread out around the outer third of my eyelid.

I then used the blending crease brush from this box and applied Bae into my crease in a windshield wiper motion.

I then used my fingers to pat BFF into the center of my lid before taking the blending crease brush to blend BFF into Bae and ATL.

Next, I patted charmer into the inner corner of my eyelids.

Finally, I used Boxy Black to line as close to my lash line as possible.

Here is one eye with a coat of the mascara and one without.

And here is the finished look. I applied my regular foundation and also applied the Velvet Matte liquid lipstick from this box. I felt smoking!

The Verdict: I was less than thrilled with the last Pur Mystery Box, but I think this box is definitely a winner! I really enjoyed getting the palette and the liquid lipstick, and the mascara was a quality mascara to receive as well. Considering this box cost $26.95 ($20 plus $6.95 shipping), I think this box has a stellar value of $111.

The Wrap Up:

Can You still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, as of publication, this box is still available!

Value Breakdown: For $26.95 ($20+ $6.95 shipping), this bag has a value of $111. That means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Blending Brush: $4.37
  • Liquid Lipstick: $4.37
  • Lip Gloss: $4.37
  • Eyeshadow Palette: $8.74
  • Mascara: $5.10

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

That’s a pretty solid box for the price. I received the palette from boxy and I actually love it . It’s been the perfect spring/summer palette and I haven’t had any issues with color payoff or blending. Some colors have fallout , but nothing a little baking can’t handle.

This is a definite improvement from the last box. For me though it would have been a miss. I already received that palette in Boxycharm and don’t use lip products often. Hope everyone else loves it.

Thank you so much for this review. My box hasn’t arrived yet. I was disappointed with all of the lip glosses last time (cute but too many) and somehow I knew it would be that eye palette because it looks vibrant but got the worse reviews. I guess it was worth $20 if not $100. 🙂

That Boxycharm palette is pretty disappointing. I found it really only applies evenly and well with a wet brush, even applying with finger it’s patchy and the few shadows I’ve used several times (I took this on a four day trip as my only palette) started to seal almost immediately even using a brush!

I don’t think I’ve gotten anything from Pur which I thought was really good.

Hi Kris!
When my acne isn’t acting up I use the Dr. Jart cicapair cream (the one with spf!) and then my Mac studio finish powder foundation! That’s what I am wearing here.

Jessica – you are just precious. I love your cute swatches – the asterisks*** – if you lived close to me – which I’m sure you don’t as I live not only in a non ‘metro’ area – I live in Arkansas – and we are an entire state of ‘non’ metropolitan areas by all accounts. Not that I’m knocking if – I love it !!! And after living in California as well as St. Croix for a few years – I’m just fine with my little town !!! Anyway – keep up the good work !! Love your through reviews and real talk way of relaying the info !!!

I live in Arkansas, too! Love it!

Love the lipstick on you.

How many layer did it take for the eye shadow swatches? I love the colors in the palette but it takes a lot of building for them to be visible and honestly not worth the effort when I have so many palettes to play with at this point. (Thanks boxycharm!)

Good question! I was shocked at how good the swatches looked, but then they went on to her eyes as poorly as I remembered them applying on me. I love that there’s a tutorial, it’s just a shame you can’t actually see the end results on her eyes.

Great review. I’m glad I did not order. I already have that palette and I don’t like it very much. It always ends up dusting under my eyes which I’ve never had before.

Taren

Yes! The fallout from their eyeshadows is the worst I’ve ever seen. But I love their powder foundation.

Taren

Nice review, but didn’t they say the mystery box would have 6 items?

Jessica

Hi Taren!
That is a typo on my part. They promised five full size items with a minimum value of $100.

Taren

Thanks for clarifying!
