Play! by Sephora is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription. Each month they send you six samples, a PLAY! BOOK of tips and tricks, and a PLAY! PASS for in-store learning.

I used to work at Sephora so I naturally couldn’t resist this subscription!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Every month they include all of the samples in a mini bag with a different design.

FYI - The box variation I received this month is box ending in #693. To find out which box you’re receiving at the beginning of each month, follow these instructions:

If you log in through a browser, not the app, and go to my account > account details > online orders and open the play! Order Details, you can see the “item number” next to the image.

Play! by Sephora March 2018 #693 Review

Each box comes with a foldable info sheet. The front always has a design related to the theme (Beauty Goals” this month), and the Play! Pass.

Each box comes with a Play! Pass, which is a card you can use at Sephora (in-store) to get 50 extra rewards points, and you can also get one-on-one tutorials and tips of products from a Sephora consultant.

The opposite side of the info sheet has pictures of each item and details about what they are, how to use them, and why they think you’ll love them.

Bumble and Bumble Bb Thickening Spray Pre-Styler, 1 fl oz

Bumble and Bumble Bb Thickening Spray Pre-Styler, 1 fl oz – Estimated Value $5.50 (buy a 2 fl oz. bottle for $11)

I love the Bumble and Bumble brand – I’m always happy to see a product from them in a subscription box. I used this on my towel-dried hair before blow drying and it definitely left some extra texture and body in my hair! My hair is really fine so I’ll take any volume help that I can.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, .2 ml – Estimated Value $7.27 (buy a .55ml pencil for $20)

My HOLY GRAIL liquid liner! I’ll never use another liquid liner. This one has a brush tip, is super black, and stays forever. I’m always happy to get extras of this because I always use them!

BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter in Champagne Pop, .085 oz – Retail Value $19

This highlight is very pretty! Blends well and is very shimmery in a natural glow and doesn’t look like little glitter pieces all over your face. This color is a little dark/warm for my skin tone, so I may actually just use this as an eyeshadow!

Benefit the POREfessional, .1 fl oz

Benefit the POREfessional, .1 fl oz – Estimated Value $4.80 (buy a .25 fl oz. tube for $12)

This product is a classic from Benefit! It’s stayed around because it works great. It’s a balm you use to smooth your complexion and minimize your pores before applying foundation, or just on its own. It’s soft and comfortable to wear – I always have a sample of this in my makeup bag, too.

Sephora Collection Mud Mask Purifying & Mattifying, .33 oz – Estimated Value $3.30 (buy a 1 oz. jar for $10)

I’d love to review this mud mask for you, but mine came completely dried out and unusable. I contacted customer service and they promptly added 100 points to my account, which is enough to redeem a sample like the ones found in the Play! boxes.

VIKTOR & ROLF Flowerbomb – sample vial

This perfume is a cult favorite and is warm, slightly spicy, and floral.

Here I am wearing the Kat Von D Liner, the POREfessional under my foundation, and having used the BB thickening spray.

Verdict: This month's Play! by Sephora box has a value of about $39.87. I think that’s great for a $10 beauty box, especially since the box will always include high-end brands. I love trying new things from brands I love and I trust Sephora’s curation of brands and products, as well.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive next month's samples, curated based on your Play! Profile. Get email alerts for monthly spoilers!

Value Breakdown: At $10 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Bb Thickening Spray: $1.40
  • Kat Von D Liner: $1.82
  • BECCA Highlighter: $4.77
  • POREfessional: $1.20
  • Sephora Mud mask: $0.83

I cancelled after this one. I was so excited to get Play! as I love Sephora, but I get the same/ better samples just when shopping for the products I use regularly. I have a lot of hair, and none of the samples are ever enough to determine their efficacy, and I often receive products that I have to give away because they’re not for my hair type. Also, I get way too many anti aging creams that don’t work for my acne prone skin. $10 is too much for the 1 or 2 samples I can actually use each month. Sad to break up with Sephora because I like the brands, but at least with Ipsy I get things that are geared toward my profile and that I can use.

I didn’t even think about calling Customer Service due to my Becca highlter being broken! Probably too late now. I cancelled anyway. More missed than hits the last few months for me.

This Month May was my first Play! By Sephora Box and I was Not impressed with it at all! It looked like to me is all they did was throw in some samples and mailed it. None of my samples were relevant to me what so ever. I will give them a couple more months to see if they get better and if Not I will Not stick around. Boxycharm & Ipsy & sometimes Birchbox are my Favorites!

I received this same box. I have huge curly frizzy hair so not really sure what about my profile says I need thickening spray. My Becca compact was broken. I contacted customer service and was refunded the price of this month’s box. Happy with that solution since I probably will not use any of it. So close to cancelling. I will give them one more month

This was my box too and I cancelled. The mud mask came in dry. Got 200 points for it. Everything was meh except for the eyeliner.

This was my box… I kept the highlighter and liner (as minis of 2 products I already own) and gave away the rest. I think my relationship with Play! is coming to an end…

I love that mask! I have about one more use left in mine!

I got the same items, and my Becca highlighter came broken. I emailed customer service and they have not responded. I’m bummed!

Call! I got this same box, my Becca was shattered as well. (I’ve recieved it in a few other boxes in perfect condition, however it was in bubble Wrap) I called and the lady offered me $5.00 credit (very strange they have so many different policies on broken product issues?) I told her that would do me no good as I subscribe to every beauty box available and I will never have the need to purchase makeup or any beauty product again. She placed me on hold and came back and offered to ship me an entire new box which came up’s instead of the regular mail and my Becca powder was not broken. So I would say complain about what they offer you, because they can clearly replace your entire body! I was just asking for a new powder!

The same Becca highlighter compact came in an Allure box a few months ago and I think most of us had broken compacts. They sent me 2 non-broken replacements and a Kat Von D lipstick to make up for it. I hope Sephora does something extra nice for everyone, too.

They won’t! They gave me 100 points and that’s it! They never replace an item which is terrible. We pay for the bag then instead of sending a replacement they give you points which you can only use if you buy something!

Jen

Add some water to the mask and seal it up. The next day it should be rehydrated and you can try it!
