Plated is committed to using sustainably sourced seafood, seasonal produce, and meat that’s free from antibiotics and added hormones. Like most meal kits, Plated won't include standard pantry items (think salt, pepper, olive oil). They will, however, email you to let you know what pantry items you should have on hand for that week's box. Prep time and dietary details are listed in each recipe. And if you love a recipe, you can rate it and download a digital recipe card via your online account. (Highly rated recipes sometimes come back as "Encore" recipes for you to order again, so don't forget to leave your star rating each week!)

This review is for the 2 recipes (4 plates) plan, which cost $48.00 per week (+ $6.00 shipping). I chose to have chicken, beef, shellfish, and fish as options to include in my recipes.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Plated May 2018 - quesadilla Plated May 2018 - quesadilla 2

Plated sends each meal mostly packaged together in a plastic bag, except for meat and any larger produce that may not fit. Each individually wrapped item is marked with the meal it belongs to so you can organize them in your refrigerator upon unpacking. I really appreciate this extra step to keep things organized and easy for me when unpacking!

Chicken and Spinach Quesadillas with Cilantro-Lime Crema

Plated May 2018 - quesadilla 4

Plated recipe cards come with a short description on the front and include the estimated prep and cook time and the calories per serving. On the other side, you'll see a list of ingredients, what you'll need from your kitchen (ingredients as well as tools), recipe tips, and step-by-step directions with photos.

Let's start cooking!

Plated May 2018 - 0002

I started off, as always, by chopping my produce. Here we have cilantro, spinach, and one lime.

Plated May 2018 - 0001

Once I was done with my prep, I cooked my chicken. I went low and slow this time around letting my chicken cook for about eight minutes on each side.

Plated May 2018 - 0003

Once my chicken was almost completely cooked through, I added the spinach to the pan so that it could cook down along with the chicken. The spinach really filled the pan so kept moving it around until it was completely wilted down.

Plated May 2018 - 0004 Plated May 2018 - 0005

Once my chicken and spinach were done cooking it was time to prepare my quesadillas. The recipe card to place these on a baking sheet, but when I went to grab one from my cabinet I realized that I no longer had any. No clue where they went, but luckily I had a hot stone that was big enough for both quesadillas. Here you have the chicken and spinach mixture with cheese on the top and bottom. Now into the oven for about six minutes.

Plated May 2018 - 0006 Plated May 2018 - 0007

While my quesadillas baked in the oven I made my sauce. This was super easy to make! All I did was add the cilantro, sour cream, salt, pepper, and half of the lime. Oh my, is this sauce delicious! My only complaint, I wish it came with my sour cream to make even more of this sauce for dipping.

Plated May 2018 - 0008

Here are the quesadillas fresh out of the oven! They are perfectly baked, a little toasty, and a lot of crunch. I am going to have to make my quesadillas this way from now on.

Plated May 2018 - 0009

Here is my finished plate with that amazing sauce on top! Since the sauce is for two people, it didn't really allow for each of us to have too much of it. I wanted a huge dollop in the center as well for dipping. The lime really cuts through the creaminess of the sour cream, the chicken was a little spicy, and the spinach was so rich and melty mixed with all of the cheese. A quick and delicious meal! Now only if I could have had some guacamole and a margarita with it!

Here is our second recipe card, I love reading through the recipe tips that are listed on the back of each card.

Plated May 2018 - 0011

My second recipe had a small amount of prep like the first. Here are my chopped onion, shallot, and spinach.

Plated May 2018 - 0015

In a pan, I cooked down the shallot until fragrant. Then, I simply added all of that delicious spinach until it cooked down as well, mixing with the shallot to combine flavors.

Plated May 2018 - 0010

Here is my sauce! This was super easy, just whisk together yogurt, curry paste, salt, and pepper, I then added my chicken to marinate with the sauce.

Plated May 2018 - 0012

Time to cook the chicken! Since the chicken marinated in that creamy sauce, we covered the pan with foil and set it in the oven to bake for ten to twelve minutes.

Plated May 2018 - 0013

While my chicken baked, I made my second sauce. I used the onion, tomato paste, and curry paste. I let this all warm together until fragrant. Please note that this also called for ginger and garlic. I am pregnant and two things that have been unappetizing to me have been ginger and garlic, so I decided to pass on these ingredients.

Plated May 2018 - 0014

By the time my sauce was warm, my chicken was done! I added my chicken to coat in the sauce, straight out of the oven.

Plated May 2018 - 0016

Look at this finished plate, I'm hungry again just looking at it! The curry yogurt chicken was so rich and flavorful with a little bite to it. The spinach with the shallot was the perfect addition to cut through the spiciness of the chicken. The warmed naan was my favorite part though! I decided to put a piece of chicken with spinach on a piece of the naan to eat. Way too good! My only complaint, I wanted more! Maybe it is because I am pregnant, but I would love to see bigger serving sizes if nothing else but for leftovers.

Verdict: This month's Plated was amazing! Both of my meals were relatively easy to cook, which I really appreciate. I think the curry chicken was my favorite because it was packed full of flavor with hints of spice. The quesadilla, while simple, was a great way to learn new ways to make my quesadillas a bit more fancy at home. It was great to see and learn new recipes that I know I will be cooking again!

We had to cancel. We started getting missing ingredients and damaged produce in almost every shipment. Sometimes, the ingredient containers weren’t sealed properly and everything was covered a sauce. Recipe cards missing a lot (I know they are online but I don’t like my laptop on the counter when I am cooking). Things not labled, “is this packet vinegar or Worcestershire?”

Final straw was a shipment that showed as delivered. Literally went nuts looking all over for it, front porch, back porch etc. finally later in the evening got a text message from the delivery driver “hey couldn’t find your house, left it at the mailboxes”. The mailboxes are a communal bank, half mile down the road. We are lucky these two boxes were still there. I have no idea how long they were there. I know that it’s the delivery person but after all the little problems we are unfortunately tired of calling customer service.

I have been really impressed with Plated. We tried a couple other meal services and Plated is superior in quality ingredients and freshness/cold temp at delivery. We had the Butter chicken last week and left out the garlic and ginger too. It was great!!! My picky boys loved it. We plan to continue with Plated because it’s easy to choose meals from a wide selection and easy to skip weeks if needed.
