Oxford Momma May 2018 Review

The theme for the May box is “thrive” and the box contained 6 items, 3 of which were exclusive to this box:

Although the rest of packaging was well done, I personally didn’t care for the black sizzle because of the mess they made. I’ve never experienced this before, and I’m not sure if it was just my box, but they made a huge mess. Everything in the box was covered with black dust – you can see it on the inside of the lid and on some of the item photos. It’s a nitpick – but worth mentioning.

The box was topped with a card detailing the content as well as some information about the theme of the month.

Breathe, Mama, Breathe: 5-Minute Mindfulness for Busy Moms

Breathe, Mama, Breathe: 5-Minute Mindfulness for Busy Moms by Shonda Moralis, MSW, LCSW - Retail Value $14.95 (found here for $12.07)

This is a National Parenting Product Award (NAPPA) Winner that Parents Magazine called a “Mom Must-Read.”

“Easy-to-follow practices that will help moms find quick, daily opportunities to reset and refocus with mindfulness

Moms can feel as if they are sprinting through life, crashing onto the pillow at day’s end only to start again the next morning. In Breathe, Mama, Breathe, psychotherapist Shonda Moralis outlines the benefits of daily meditation and shows moms how to do it—in just five minutes! Plus, she shares over 60 “mindful breaks” that will help moms tune into their own well-being (along with everyone else’s):

  • Eat a mindful breakfast—with no phone, TV, or newspaper!
  • Cuddle your child and take three deep breaths together.
  • Give yourself a mindful-mommy high five—because moms can use positive reinforcement, too.

Every mom—whether caring for a new baby, an overscheduled grade-schooler, or an angsty teen—can become a mindful mama!”

Mommy High Fives? Heck ya! “Mom-Guilt” be damned. As a busy, full-time working Mom to a 3-year-old, who made the decision to get a new puppy this past weekend – this book was a nice addition to my bedtime routine. Once the house was finally settled, I read a few chapters and it made me realize some of the shortcomings of my day. I’m an “activator” by nature, and often feel like my day is just checking off the boxes to get to bedtime – and this book was a gentle reminder to live in the moment and actually enjoy the activities that I was simply checking off. I loved some of the tips and ways to incorporate mindfulness into my day.

Moi Grapefruit Scented Soy Candle

Oxford Momma Exclusive! Moi Grapefruit Scented Soy Candle – Retail Value $24

Luxury aromatic soy candles hand-poured in the USA, Moi Candles are available exclusively through Oxford Momma subscription box. Choose your scent and enjoy 45-60 hours of cleaning burning aroma.

I loved the light, grapefruit scent of this candle. I burned it while I was working in my office for about 4 hours – and it smelled clean and fresh without being overpowering. The candle is in a clear glass jar, that can be easily repurposed after the candle is gone (I’m thinking of planting succulents in some of my old candle jars!)

Spinster Sisters Natural Lip Balm in Pure – Retail Value $4.75

Ingredients: Prunus Dulcis (Almond) Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Cera alba (Beeswax), Honey, Tocopherol (Vitamin E) Oil, and flavor.

Our Lip Balm is hard to beat. It's made with beeswax which seals in moisture and protects skin from environmental toxins, as well as coconut oil which is a natural soother for dry, chapped, and flaking skin. This Lip Balm will leave your lips moisturized without feeling waxy.

This is a standard 0.15 oz tube of balm and is sulfate, phthalate, and paraben free. The case is BPA-free #5 plastic made with post-consumer recycled materials.

I have an abundance of lippies around my house – so I wasn’t super excited to get this product – UNTIL I TRIED IT. This is a keeper. The formula is like liquid silk – super moisturizing and made out of all natural quality ingredients. It has no discernable taste, scent, or tint – meaning that it’ll be a great item to keep in my handbag to share with my husband and toddler. I have it on right now, and I can’t stop rubbing my lips together to feel how silky they are!

Spinster Sisters Bath Butta' Bomb

Spinster Sisters Bath Butta' Bomb – Retail Value $5.50

Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Magnesium Sulfate, Kaolin, fair-trade Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit, Theobroma cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Distillate, Botanicals and/or Colorants, and Essential Oil (EO) or Fragrance Oil (FR) [scent options note if EO or FR is used]. May include mica.

Fun and fizzy Bath Butta' Bombs add excitement to any bath. They are specially made with kaolin clay, a great detoxifier that helps remove excess dirt and oil from your skin. Paired with cocoa and shea butters, which are known for being incredibly moisturizing and soothing, you'll leave your bath feeling like a new person.

This is a single use, 3 oz bath bomb that is sulfate, phthalate, and paraben free. It’s packed in a BPA-free hard shell (note that mine was unsealed when it arrived). I received the orange blossom rose petal variety that is scented with essential oils.

After immediately trying the lip balm, I couldn’t wait to take a nice soak and enjoy the bath bomb. I’m a big bath kind of girl – and enjoyed the light, citrus scent of this soak. It fizzed like an Alka-Seltzer tablet when I dropped it into the water, but I was a bit disappointed that the fizziness didn’t last long. The water was lovely scented, and I could feel the oil lightly in the water, which left my skin super silky and soft. This is a clear product, leaving no residue in the tub. I feel relaxed, clean, and refreshed – which is exactly what I like in a bath bomb!

Oxford Momma Exclusive! Art Print & Postcard – Listed Value $3

Oxford Momma Exclusive! Bookmark – Listed Value $3

First, I love the touch of getting a bookmark with my book! I never have one laying around, so it was nice to have one at the tip of my fingers when I needed it. Second, the art print/postcard is super cute. It would be great to send it to a girlfriend who was going through a hard time – or leave it in your home or office for inspiration! It’s a standard 4x6”, so I plan to pop it into a frame that I already have and add it to my home office. Both of these items are made out of heavy paper, and I would have liked them a bit more if they were waterproof or coated in some way.

The Verdict: I believe this is a new subscription, and this is the first box that I received from Oxford Momma. I love that it’s curated with all moms in mind and not just a small subset of the club. I think that the book and the three self-care items were of good quality, and I liked that they were all natural products. I think that the 2 printed pieces have an inflated retail value, and are more of “freebies” or special extras than actual items in the box. When using the listed and retail values you receive $55.20 in products for $40, including free US shipping. If you adjust for the lower book price on Amazon and consider the cards “freebies” – you still are getting $46.32 for $40, which is around 15% off each item.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box will be the June box, shipped the first week of June.

I know this is probably weird, but I really get turned off by all the “mom” stuff. I’m mother to a one year old, but these curations telling me to breathe and take a bath do nothing for me. I don’t need a bath bomb and a book of mantras. Bring on the wine!

I have never enjoyed the ‘mommy’ lingo often found with mother-related books, boxes, etc. I just assumed most others had no problems with it because it’s everywhere. I’m too sarcastic and snarky to be ‘mommy.’ I’m more ‘mutha.’

Every time I see this box, I get disappointed that it’s not a grammar sub box!

Colette

Ha! Sounds like a good idea, what would you include in it?

Dea

Same things, but we’d spell them correctly. “Phthalate-free”, not “phthalate free”; “contains lavender and coconut oil”, not “contains Lavender and Coconut Oil”.

GlobeIn has a section in their shop called “Stationary”. I emailed them once to ask whether that term referred to merchandise they couldn’t move. I don’t think they got it.

Dea

Yes, yes, and Oxford comma yes to that!!!
