Each month, you'll receive 4-8 awesomely irreverent items handmade by artists and small businesses. The women behind Smartass & Sass might not take themselves too seriously, but they are serious about supporting the creatives behind the items in their box and paying a fair price for their quality goods. Smartass & Sass also offers a $15.95 Shirt-only Box and $49.95 Big Box.

This is a review of the $34.95 a month box.

Smartass & Sass May 2018 Review

Smartass & Sass comes with a booklet that has all the info you’ll ever need about them, and the items in the box. Each month has an overall theme and this time it’s “I’m Effing Magical ” which celebrates those of us who are so badass, it MUST be magic.

I Might Do A Trick Tumbler, 16 oz - Listed Retail Value $15

When I pulled this cup out of the box, the first thing I saw was the "ck" and I thought “Oh my gosh they sent me a cup with the f-word on it.” I don't know if I am relieved or disappointed that it actually says “Keep staring, I might do a trick” and not something a little more vulgar. All that aside, I am loving the purple ombre design of this tumbler, but I wish the straw and lid were metal instead of plastic. The plastic feels a bit bulky and out of place with the sharp metal design. However, I am an avid tumbler user, so this will be thrown into the rotation— though I am a bit bummed it is hand wash only.

Primitives By Kathy Fantasy Land Tote,

Primitives By Kathy Fantasy Land Tote, 8.5” x 4.5” x 10.25” - Listed Retail Value $6

I love this tote! This is the same fabric feel of reusable shopping bags but in a much smaller size. This is actually the perfect size to use as a lunch tote for when I bring my lunch to work, so this will immediately be put to use. I also appreciate the cheeky quote of “When someone told me I live in a fantasy land I nearly fell off my unicorn.” The last photo shows the tote next to the 16 oz tumbler to give you a better idea of the sizes.

Near Modern Disaster GD Unicorn Enamel Pin

Near Modern Disaster GD Unicorn Enamel Pin - Retail Value $10

Enamel pins are all the rage right now, even though mine are just accumulating in a pile around my apartment (I do have plans to do something cool with the pins and a cork board in the future, though). This is one of my favorites that I have received— the sparkly pink glitter is perfect girly touch with the quote, and to be honest I think I have called myself the same in the past. The 1-inch size is perfect to make add some pizazz without being too obnoxious, which works well for my cork board enamel pin project.

About Face Designs Abracadabra Nail File,

About Face Designs Abracadabra Nail File - Listed Retail Value $2.40

The cheeky-ness of this nail file brings me joy, and I can always use more emory boards. The grit on this is perfect for helping me keep my nails sharp without being too abrasive on my cuticles.

Crystal Ball Hot & Cold Eye Mask

Crystal Ball Hot & Cold Eye Mask - Listed Retail Value $10

When I pulled this out of the box, I squealed. I have been wanting an eye mask with curse words on it for a long time (at one point, I even requested a custom order from an Etsy shop to try and get one made, and the shop declined). This is even better, though, because not only is it speaking my language but it also has gel beads to be used in hot or cold therapy. The day after I got this box I had a friend come over, and at one point in the evening, she got a really bad tension headache. I grabbed this face mask, popped it in the microwave for 45 seconds, and handed it to her with some ibuprofen. She literally moaned when she put this on her face, and it immediately provided relief while waiting for the pain meds to kick in. This isn't available for sale in the Smartass & Sass shop yet, but when it is I will be buying a second mask to give to my friend! Smartass & Sass also included a link to a hilarious meditation called F*ck That: An Honest Meditation, which pairs perfectly with relaxing while wearing the mask.

Scented Studio Magic Potion Perfume Balm - Listed Retail Value $19.95

This is a custom scent made just for this box, and it includes notes of citrus, rain, and fruity sugar. I enjoyed the scent, however, I don't feel like this lip-balm sized tube is worth $20. Custom scents from the brand run $19.95 for an 8 oz body mist or 10 ml perfume oil, but the website doesn't offer custom scented perfume balms.

Erin Elyse Shiny Shit Ring Dish,

Erin Elyse Shiny Sh*t Ring Dish, 3” x 3” - Listed Retail Value $10

I love this porcelain ring dish! It is the perfect size to hold my growing collection of enamel pins, or earrings, or spare change… basically, any small shiny thing will go great here. I couldn't find this exact quote online, but all of the other ring dishes in this size retail for $10, so I think that listed value is spot on.

Verdict: This was my first month trying Smartass & Sass, and I enjoyed the cheeky humor and occasional curse word that this box provided. I calculated a value of $73.35, but that feels a smidge high due to my doubts about the actual value of the perfume balm. I wish more of the products included didn't come from wholesale, so it would be easier to find the values of these items. Other than that, I think this box is a lot of fun!

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive the June box. From Smartass & Sass:

If this one didn’t have that shipping charge I’d be really interested!

I definitely feel the items in the box are not worth the cost.

I’m going to keep an eye out for that mask, and the bag is cute too. It’s one of their better boxes to be sure (even as I still feel it’s a bit pricey)

I appreciate the idea, but the value doesn’t seem to be the there. $20 – now you are talking…

I’ve thought that every review. The box is fun but overpriced for what they send.
