My First Reading Club April 2018 Review

Each box arrives with an info sheet. It features a quote from a respected author, a note from the My First Reading Club co-founder, and some additional information about each month's "mommy gift."

Onto the books:

What Can I Taste? Annie Kubler - Retail Value $3.18

The first of three Small Senses board books from Annie Kubler, What Can I Taste? features short phrases and vivid illustrations of small children. I love that so many different ethnicities are represented! This holds true for all 3 Small Senses books that I received. This book is particularly relevant in our house right now because my 6 month old has just really started to get into eating solids. Though he can't fully process the words and drawings on the pages, this book provides a really adorable introduction to different kinds of foods - from spaghetti, to a crumbly cake, to crunchy veggies.

What Can I Smell? Annie Kubler - Retail Value $3.99

All about our sense of smell, this sturdy little board book features short, kid-friendly phrases in the same style of the first. In fact, all three of these Senses books follow the exact same format. I love that this one touches on different smells like soaps, flowers, and food, but even the short length didn't really hold my baby's attention. Maybe he'll be more into it in a couple months!

What Can I Feel? Annie Kubler - Retail Value $3.20

Ah, the cute illustrations of babies are the best part of these books (for me - not sure that my own baby is that into them!). What Can I Feel? ends on "snuggly bedtime cuddles" and serves as a great bedtime book option.

Julius Jr Eureka - Retail Value $12.50

This activity book is meant for children ages 2 to 5. Nice to hold onto for the future, but my 6 month old is obviously too young to enjoy it now - a little disappointing. It features Julius Jr., Worry Bear, Clancy, Ping, and Sheree, Paul Frank characters on Nick Jr's Julius Jr. With 48 pages of scenes to color, four chunky crayons, and a sheet of more than 50 colorful stickers, this activity book is a great way to occupy a small child for an hour or two.

ESA Lavender Bath Crystals, 1.65 oz - Retail Value $0.52 (buy a case of 200 for $104.00)

There’s nothing quite like the luxury of taking the time for a hot bath when you’re a busy mom. The relaxing lavender fragrance and rejuvenating properties of this sea salt blend made for a really uplifting and relaxing experience. This one container was perfect for one bath.

Verdict: My First Reading Club has been stepping up their game. I love the variety that I've been receiving lately, and the Small Senses books are a nice addition to our library. I've been an over abundance of Disney books in the past, so it's a pleasant surprise to receive selections that are not about movies.

The value of this month's books comes in at $23.39. With a subscription cost of $21.99 + $7 shipping, the value really isn't there overall. I would like to see a few more books adding to bring the overall value up. However, for avid young readers who want to build their library on a monthly basis, I really enjoyed the curated selection this month.

To Wrap Up:
