Little Feminist Book Club + Activity Box March 2018 Review
Drum Dream Girl by Margarita Engle - Retail Value $17.99 (found here for $11)
The featured book of the month is Drum Dream Girl: How One Girl's Courage Changed Music. The little dream girl lived in the city of drumbeats, but there was one rule: Girls Cannot Be Drummers! With this being a rule in her city, this little girl had to practice her passion of drumming in secret. Until one night, her drumming could be heard throughout drumbeat city. Everyone was singing and dancing along to her beautiful music. Finally, everyone agreed in the city that girls should be allowed to drum as well!
What I love the most about this book is that it was inspired by the childhood of Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, a girl who broke Cuba's traditional rule against female drummers. This story is about dreamers of all kinds, but it reminds us that every person is capable. As an adult and as a parent, you tend to look back on the things you could have done if you dared to dream bigger. This book reminds me how important it is to teach our kids that they can do it all, boy or girl, we can all accomplish whatever we dream to do. I love this story and the meaning behind it, and I love to see such a strong young girl at the heart of it all!
Notes To You From The Author
This month's box came with a note from the author and illustrator of Drum Dream Girl. They tell us what dreams they have, and why they decided to create this book. The sweet notes end asking your little one what dreams they have. I love cards like this because they feel so personal, and while my son is a big young to tell me what big dreams he has, I love imagining for him what his hopes and dreams will be in the next few years.
Lollipop Drum
I love that the activity box comes with a toy. This fun little drum is the perfect pairing to this month's book. My son has gotten a lot of use out of this little drum, it is just his size! He can often be found sitting in our family room drumming or marching through the kitchen making little songs. We love music in our house so I get a lot of joy seeing him creating his own sounds already!
Instrument and Drum Guide
This booklet takes us through all of the instruments that Millo and her sisters played in their band. My son is always asking what certain words or objects are, so this was a great visual from him outside of the book to learn about new instruments. There are also pages that will help you and your little one learn how to drum! My husband has been working on mastering this guide so that he can hopefully teach our son how to use his drum set. What a helpful tool to include!
DIY Activities
Our next booklet was the month's DIY activities. Inside you can find a helpful how to build your very own musical instruments at home! Don't worry, all materials and steps were relatively easy to follow. You can use recycled materials to make an instrument for the whole family. I can't wait to build some of these instruments for the whole family to enjoy.
Each month you will find a bookmark that you can use with the month's featured book. Also, it comes with discussion questions that you can use with your little one. Each question relates back to the book so it really helps to continue the important topic of the book, what your child learned, what they saw, and more even after reading.
The last item of the month is a postcard that your little one can fill out and send back to Little Feminist Book Club. On here you can answer the author's letter by letting them know what big dreams you have. You can also receive a badge simply for sending your completed postcard in. What a fun and interactive way to complete this box!
Verdict: I love Little Feminist Book Club + Activity Box! We are always looking to add new books to my son's collection, and this box is sure to always send a beautiful and well-written book with a wonderful message. There are so few books with a strong female lead character that isn't a princess, so I am so happy to have found Little Feminist Book Club to expand the image of what girls can do for my son. I want him to grow up believing in himself while also believing and respecting other people as well. This box brings such a beautiful message along with different activities and lessons right to your door. I can't recommend this box enough!
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your next box would be May!
Value Breakdown: This box cost me $37 a month with free shipping. The book is the only item that I can attach a retail value to which came in at $17.99. I love that there is so much interaction in one box that will allow you and your little feminist to discuss the book and learn more about the month's theme, why dreaming big is so important for every person.
