This box usually contains some ready-to-eat snacks and a few pantry items:
On one side of the information card was details about this month’s items, and the other side included a workout.
There was some product literature for one of the items in the box.
Lifeaid Thrive – Buy 24 Cans for $59.76
Products from this company are subscription box mainstays. This one is vegan, gluten-free, paleo friendly, and has no sodium, so it works for a lot of different health concerns. It does have a few calories (45 per serving). This has a lot of anti-inflammatory compounds like turmeric and ginger. It tastes all right despite that (sometimes health beverages taste like they’re good for you if you know what I mean) but this one is tolerable. Also if you want to try a can or two before spending $60, I have seen this sold individually at Whole Foods.
And, here is how FitSnack Box packs heavy beverage cans. I wish other companies would learn to do this (hint, hint, Vegan Cuts Snack Box) because this keeps the can from smashing all the chips.
Detox Organics Chocolate Superfoods (2 servings) – Buy 30 Servings for $99 (found here for $69)
I normally cringe to see the word “detox” because detox is not a scientific or medical concept, it’s a marketing term. But. I do like to add superfood powders to my smoothies, just to get a little nutrition from vegetables and other plants I wouldn’t normally eat (like wheat grass, kelp, and beets). And this has all of those things. I can’t say I noticed a health difference after two servings, but this worked really well in my smoothies and added a ton of chocolate flavor. It’s kind of spendy but most products like this are so that is not necessarily off-putting for me, and I will actually strongly consider this one next time I am in the market for a product like this.
Saffron Road Lentil Crackers in Cracked Pepper (0.75 oz x 2) – Buy 6, 4.5 oz. Boxes for $28.42
I have had these before in Fit Snack Box but they are actually pretty good. These are quite starchy (with corn flour and potato starch in addition to the lentil flour) but if you are in the market for a gluten-free cracker, or just a relatively plain cracker that can stand up to hummus and such, this is a good choice. Please note these do have dairy ingredients so they’re not vegan. (This box doesn’t promise to be vegan, though some items may fit that category.)
Hippeas in Vegan White Cheddar (1 oz) – Buy 12, 4 oz Bags for $35.88 (found here for $34.09)
If you have had Snapea Crisps, these are similar, but with chickpea flour instead. They are air puffed and the coating doesn’t get all over your fingers. I do not think they taste like actual cheese, but they are nice and savory and work well enough as a snack to have beside a sandwich for lunch. These have shown up in tons of subscription boxes lately.
Rise Buddy Snacks in Pizza Flavor (1.4 oz) – Retail Value $2
I would guess by the packaging that these are meant to appeal to kids. They’re made with brown rice flour, which is great (I’m a fan of whole grains), and they will work for those who need to eat gluten-free. They taste at least as much like pizza as any other cracker-like snack making the same claims, these days, which is to say, not much, but there are definitely some vaguely Italian herbs and spices in there somewhere.
Medi Weightloss Classic Marshmallow Crisp – Buy 6 for $17.25
This whole thing is only 100 calories (hence the association with a weight loss brand, I suppose). This has dairy and egg ingredients but no actual gelatin (I read the ingredients list about three times before I ate this, just to be sure) so it is vegetarian but not vegan. I haven’t had a real Rice Krispie treat for decades (been a vegetarian since 1993) so I was satisfied with the texture here. The flavor was sweet without being overpowering and these have some protein and fiber as well.
Medi Weightloss Chocolate Celebration Delight (0.99 oz) – Buy 7 for $18.40
This had some similarities to the marshmallow bar above but I actually liked it as well. It has soy, dairy, and egg ingredients but is vegetarian. This one is also 100 calories. I am still counting calories to maintain my weight after losing 45 pounds a few years ago, so I do appreciate low-calorie snacks like this that make you feel like you are eating more. I would be interested in seeing more snacks from this brand – this is a great way to sample them without shelling out cash for a whole box.
Amsety Bar in Peanut Butter (1.69 oz) – Buy 4 Bars for $12.99
My husband’s reaction to this was hilarious. He ate his half (we share most snacks from subscription boxes so I can get a second opinion) and then asked me what it was supposed to be. I showed him what was left of mine, where you could see actual peanuts, and he couldn’t believe it had peanuts in it. Like, he didn’t even notice them. I think there is a reason sodium is used as a flavor enhancer in cooking, and when that is left out, food is just very, very bland. Anyway, these bars were designed to supply essential vitamins and minerals as apparently many patients with liver issues have a poor appetite. These show up in Fit Snack Box from time to time.
Amsety Bar in Dark Chocolate – Buy 4 Bars for $12.99
These have a little more flavor than the peanut butter ones but they still kind of taste like they’re good for you (if you know what I mean). I’m impressed that they actually have quite a lot of fiber (6 grams) and protein (8 grams). Please note these contain peanut ingredients (so watch out if you have allergies) and honey (so they’re not vegan, though they are vegetarian). These are a little expensive at over $3 per bar, though.
No Cow Protein Cookie in Peanut Butter (1.77 oz) – Buy 12 for $23.99
I have had a lot of products like this, but I don’t think I’ve had this specific one before. This is low in sugar, which appeals to me. It is also vegan but holds together pretty well even though it doesn’t have eggs (it does have xanthan gum, which may help keep it together). This is sweetened with erythritol, stevia extract, and monk fruit. Normally I don’t care for stevia but it worked well here. This has lower calories (at 250) than a lot of similar products, which is also nice, especially since 1 cookie = 1 serving (a lot of competing products are 2 or more servings per cookie).
Verdict: The April FitSnack Box had 11 items (counting the crackers separately but the two superfoods packets as 1 item), which makes the average cost per item about $2.26 (figuring a $25.90 cost for the box + shipping). Although there were some repeats this month (Amnesty bars, Hippeas), I discovered a few new items that I’m interested in trying again. And I know I mentioned this already, but I love the way they package drink cans because it keeps the chips and crackers from getting smashed.
