BookCase.Club for Kids April 2018 Review

Join the Lion Guard! by Disney Book Group

Join the Lion Guard! by Disney Book Group - Retail Value $7.99 (found here for $4.44)

We have not watched The Lion Guard yet, but my kids are familiar with The Lion King, so they were happy to see this. I loved that this book had the cute cut out eyes and handles so that they could hold it up and pretend to be the characters.

As far as the story, there wasn’t really much of one, it was just names of the characters and some short phrases, but given that the style of the actual book was so appealing to my kids, I didn’t mind in this instance.

I’m Grumpy by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm

I’m Grumpy by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm - Retail Value $7.99

This is a My First Comics book which is meant to be helpful in teaching reading. It was a cute story about a cloud who was grumpy and his friends try to help cheer him up. The style of the book was different and fun and the images were really cute!

Since the book was a comic and not every page had text with it, it was a great book to get my daughter to start inferring from pictures. I could ask her what she thought was happening instead of just reading to her about what was actually happening. It felt more unique to me to approach reading this way with her!

Splish, Splash, Splat! by Rob Scotton

Splish, Splash, Splat! by Rob Scotton - Retail Value $7.99 (found here for $7.48)

This book is about a cat named Splat who really doesn’t like the water. His mom signs him up for swimming lessons and he has a tough time getting comfortable going into the water. This was a good book to receive with summer coming up since I’m hoping our days will soon be filled with sunshine and swimming, but my kids weren’t that engaged by this one and neither was I.

One thing I wasn’t really happy with was the use of the word loser throughout the book, but that might just be because I have younger kids and am probably being a bit pickier! For example, Splat and his friend keep saying “last one to the other side is a loser.” That word just has such a negative connotation that I was a little hesitant to introduce it to my 3-year-old.

Verdict: Once again, we enjoyed the books from our BookCase.Club box. My kids loved playing with the Lion Guard book and I really liked the cute comic style of I’m Grumpy. I feel like there was some good variety in the books this month and we had enjoyed reading them together.

The total retail value of the books came to $23.97, which is great for a $14.99 ($9.99 + $5.00 shipping) per month box (especially if you opt for a longer subscription which costs less). The books were unique, fun and new to us which is always great!

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No, order before the 25th to get the next box. (Boxes ship on or before the 1st of each month.)

NEW DEAL: Use code CRATE50 to get 50% off your first box!

Value Breakdown: At $14.99 (price + shipping) for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item (since all books were the same price, I had to round up to an even $5.00!):

  • Join the Lion Guard! by Disney Book Group: $5.00
  • I’m Grumpy by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm: $5.00
  • Splish, Splash, Splat! by Rob Scotton: $5.00

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

I am with you about the word loser. I also teach my children the word hate is a bad word.
