WODBOM stands for “Workout of the Day–Box of the Month” and is a subscription box designed for CrossFit enthusiasts, by CrossFit enthusiasts. (Although, I don’t think you absolutely have to be into CrossFit to get something out of this box, as long as you are interested in working out!)

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

WODBOM April 2018 Review

This is a time of year when I expect a lot out of a fitness subscription box (people are making exercise and diet resolutions, after all), so let’s see how WODBOM stacks up:

Included was an information card describing the products in the box.

There were also some coupons and product literature this month, as usual.

Absolute Zero Laundry Detergent

Absolute Zero Laundry Detergent – Retail Value $14.99

This is supposed to be for super dirty workout gear that is resistant to regular washing (i.e., still smells). I have to admit, I don’t have this problem so I can only evaluate this as laundry detergent and not its specific capabilities. I have super sensitive skin (have to use All Free & Clear) but so far, this seems promising. This is free of fragrances and dyes and free of optical brighteners. It also doesn’t have bleach or phosphates. So it hits all the right points for me in terms of laundry detergent description. I used this on a load over the weekend and am now wearing some of those clothes, and so far I don’t have any skin irritation. But I really need to use it for awhile to see. At least there is enough in this package to do a real test. (Full disclosure: I prefer liquid laundry detergent products but I guess that is not so practical for a subscription box due to weight.)

Detach Coconut Ellie-Ade (12 fl oz)

Detach Coconut Ellie-Ade (12 fl oz) – Retail Value $3.75

I split this with my husband. But, we are not really fans after sampling it. To be fair, neither of us has cared for any coconut water product we’ve tried in the past. I suppose this is better than some others in terms of flavor. But it’s not something I really feel that I need (certainly I don’t need to replenish my sodium as I get far too much of that as it is, and I rarely sweat enough even during an intense workout to worry about electrolyte loss) so I can’t really imagine a circumstance under which I’d need to buy a product like this.

Spear Performance Sleep LTP Nighttime Recovery Formula (60 capsules)

Spear Performance Sleep LTP Nighttime Recovery Formula (60 capsules) – Retail Value $49.99

These are vegetarian capsules and they don’t contain any kind of stimulant (which makes sense for something that’s supposed to promote sleep) so I did give them a try. Unfortunately, I had the same reaction I always have with melatonin, which is to say vivid, unsettling dreams. (This is not a problem for all, or even most, people. But it is a documented side effect of melatonin and one that I appear to suffer from.) So, this is not for me, but it is a reasonable product to include because sleep and recovery are important for athletic performance and health in general.

Fuel Fudge (1 oz) – Retail Value $2.25

At first, I didn’t see this in my box and was disappointed because anything with the word “Fudge” in the name is probably going to be something I like. Turns out, it had slipped under one of the bottom flaps. Anyway, this is vegetarian but not vegan (has ghee and honey) and you should also avoid it if you have certain tree nut (coconut) allergies and/or sesame allergies (has tahini in it). This is marketed as “guilt-free” but I am not so sure about that. It has 180 calories, as much as some protein bars, and I would have to do like 20 minutes of an intense kickboxing workout to work that off at my body weight. It is mostly fat, too. Considering all of the above, what I am doing is adding one teaspoon or so at a time to my morning smoothies and closing off the packet with a binder clip and putting it in a freezer bag between uses. I would usually add plain coconut oil anyway, and this is not so different. The chocolate flavor is nice and this blends very well and gets along with my other smoothie ingredients (no weird flavors, I mean).

Baraides Premium Protective Hand Grips

Baraides Premium Protective Hand Grips – Retail Value $13.95

I have tried these before and I know that I will need to pass these along to someone else. These are “one size fits most” but the width is 3” at the widest part of the palm and my hand is not 3” across but slightly less. (I have tiny, tiny hands for an adult. Here are directions on how to use them but they hang over the side of my hand, whereas they fit the lady in the photos.) Anyway,  these are a little too big for me. Which is too bad, because are quite flexible and I could definitely use some new hand protection now that I am working out with some heavier (for me) kettlebells at least a couple of days a week. You would also need some athletic tape to secure these around your wrists.

Second Skin Women’s Performance Fleece Hoodie – Retail Value $50 (found here for $24.97)

The MSRP for this item is $50 and it’s on sale for about half price, probably because the cold season is ending. (This had a price tag attached that said $65…) Anyway, it appears various clothing items could’ve been received and that regular subscribers may have had a choice but I am happy with this. First off, it is size XS, which means it actually fits me properly. Secondly, it is soft and comfortable. I don’t work out, outside, but I don’t really have appropriate cold-weather gear other than a nice wool coat and this will be great either when my workout room is in the low 50s (it happens and I can’t stand it) or when I have to run errands during the winter.

Verdict:  I calculated a value of $134.93 for the April WODBOM – that’s more than three times the cost of the box (with the caveat that clothing values could vary more than usual this month). Although not everything ended up working out for me, I do appreciate getting a vegetarian, non-stimulant supplement, the hoodie is pretty nice, and I should be able to use all of the laundry detergent.

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No, WODBOM ships on the 5th of the month, so your first box would be May's.

Umm my hubs could totally use that detergent. We were just to tallkng about this the other day, if such a thing exists. If it works, that’s another story. Between his runnin gear and hockey base layer, that stinks to high heaven no matter how many times he washes it!

Yeah, so far it is not irritating my skin, but my workout clothes just don’t get gross enough (even when I do Insanity) to really put it to the test.

Hi. I have found that HEX detergent works better than regular detergent on my sons’ hockey gear. Still not perfectly odorless, but better and HEX is easily found at Target around me and not too expensive. I promise that I am not a shill for the brand – just a hockey mom with less stinky kids 🙂
