Vegan Cuts Snack Box April 2018 Review

I think Vegan Cuts has really stepped things up lately in terms of snack box curation. Let’s see what they sent for April:

The box came with this information card detailing the items in the box.

J. Luehder’s Soft Candy Fruity Flowers (2.82 oz)

J. Luehder’s Soft Candy Fruity Flowers (2.82 oz) – Retail Value $1.99

This is totally just candy and I am OK with that. I don’t usually get to eat gummies (most are not vegetarian) so I was happy to see these. There actually were more colors but most of them were this color you see in the second photo. These were a nice mix of tart and sweet.

Go Go Dipperz Roasted Red Pepper Hummus and Pita Chips (1 serving)

Go Go Dipperz Roasted Red Pepper Hummus and Pita Chips (1 serving) – Buy 6 Cups for $18

The chips were more like fragments, and they were a little hard, but overall I liked this snack. I do eat hummus fairly regularly, including other brands of roasted red pepper hummus, and I have also made my own, and this stands up to the competition reasonably well, plus you don’t actually have to measure any hummus because that’s already done for you!

The Good Bean Crispy Favas + Peas in Sea Salt (6 oz)

The Good Bean Crispy Favas + Peas in Sea Salt (6 oz) – Buy 6 Bags for $27

Someone once discovered that you could sell crispy roasted chickpeas and now I swear, companies are trying every other legume.  Well, this worked better than I thought it would – neither the peas nor the favas were too hard.  I thought the flavor was rather plain, though, to be honest, and I found these easiest to eat with a spoon (the peas are pretty small).

Bakery on Main Gluten Free Granola in “Extreme Fruit and Nut” (1.1 oz) – Buy 11 oz for $6.49

I have had something from this product line before because I remember the weird little shells. (I am not sure this should properly be called granola since it doesn’t have any oats…) For something called “extreme fruit and nut,” this didn’t actually have much in the way of fruit or nuts, but it was sweet without being too sugary. I expect the people who will appreciate this the most are those who need to eat gluten free.

The whole time I was taking photos for this box, Nyx was staring me down…

Justin’s Maple Almond Butter (1.15 oz)

Justin’s Maple Almond Butter (1.15 oz) – Retail Value $1.59

Justin’s packets are subscription box staples. This stuff is pretty good (I’d suggest pairing it with crackers rather than eating it on a sandwich, as a maple sandwich is a little too sweet for my taste. I do have a hard time getting every last bit out of the pouches on these though – I feel like a lot gets wasted.

Farmhouse Culture Dill Pickle Kraut Krisps (1 oz) – Buy 4, 5 oz Bags for $24.71

Ah, these. So I share all subscription box snacks with my husband unless otherwise noted. I portioned these out between the two of us. He tried one and couldn’t eat the rest. He is not a fan of dill, and they do have that cruciferous vegetable smell. I thought they were all right, probably not my favorite, but I got some of the coating in a paper cut on one of my fingers, and OUCH.

Mario Pitted Snack Olives (0.7 oz) – Buy 3, 1.05 oz Packets for $3.78 (found here for $2.94)

I love olives.  These are standard black olives and I ate them all in the space of about one minute (my husband doesn’t like olives).

Protes in Tangy Southern BBQ (1 oz)

Protes in Tangy Southern BBQ (1 oz) – Buy 12 Bags for $20.99

Protes are everywhere lately and unfortunately, you can never really escape that pea protein undertaste (which I find to be starchy and a little gritty). However, I think these are the best ones I’ve had so far – the strong, savory flavors are really better for this product.

Amazin’ Raisin in Strawberry (1.3 oz) – Buy 5 Packs for $5.99 (found here for $4.75)

I am not one to normally just eat raisins, but I tried it for the purposes of this review and I actually enjoyed these. The strawberry flavor makes these more interesting, and these had a soft texture that I liked, as well.

Nourish + Bloom Whole Food Shake in Vanilla Spice (1 serving) – Buy 10 Packets for $20

This went into a few smoothies (I just use a little protein powder at a time rather than making a whole shake). It blended better than a lot of vegan proteins and the spice didn’t conflict with the flavors of my other ingredients.

Skout Organic Energy Peruvian Chocolate Bar – Buy 12 Bars for $28.50

These have very few ingredients (mostly dates and nuts) and they do kind of taste like health food. That’s not necessarily bad, and if you don’t go into eating these expecting a candy bar, you probably won’t be disappointed. I am pretty sure I have seen these in another box (maybe a fitness box?) recently, but they’re not all over the place yet.

Vegetarian Traveler Tri-Soy Medley – Buy 12 Packets for $23.99

This brand has been popping up everywhere lately, although this is the first time I have received this particular variety. These are a little crunchy and bland to eat on their own, but if you are wanting to add protein to a salad or soup, or just to make a quick lunch with some microwaveable grain of some sort, I can see these being useful.

Tru Women Zesty Lemon Bar (1.69 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $33.48

These have also been popping up everywhere. I think the packaging has changed but I’m pretty sure I linked to the equivalent of this product up in the product name. These are soft but not crumbly, and not gritty like some other vegan proteins tend to be. I split this with my husband and he says (1) he’s also not sure why this is only marketed towards women and (2) he would’ve had no idea the flavor was supposed to be lemon if I hadn’t told him.

Ultima Replenisher Sample Pack (lemonade) – Buy 20 for $19.99 (found here for $15.84)

Rather than getting a can or bottle of drink, we got this powder pack this month. (I’m honestly not sad. This packet can’t crush chips like a can of energy drink could.) I don’t normally sweat enough to require replenishment of my electrolytes but I am saving this for some time when I am doing lots of work outside in the heat or something. (I’ve tried this product before and I do find the flavor acceptable.)

Verdict: This month’s Vegan Cuts Snack Box had 14 items for an average value per item of about $1.64.  Although there were some items I’d tried before (e.g., both bars, the Ultima product, etc.), there were also a lot of new-to-me items.  The fruity flowers candy was a highlight and I liked the raisins much more than expected.  The kraut krisps were an experience, that’s for sure (but on the other hand, if you enjoy dill, you should like those).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would be May's box, but some of the products may be available from the Vegan Cuts shop. Check out our latest spoilers!

Value Breakdown: At $22.95 for this box, you are paying about $1.64 per item.

I am pretty sure that “granola” was in a previous vegan cuts snack box last summer because I have also had it before and I remember it having about 1 or 2 dried fruits and nuts. I think it was the cranberry almond one and had the same exact thoughts you did when I ate it.

It was in Bulu Box last year sometime, too, and maybe also Love with Food? I have definitely seen it multiple times before.

Ah yes, maybe it was Love With Food that I had gotten it. I had gotten that one for a few months too.

I got my first vegan cuts snack box today and mine was a bit different than yours! Some of the items I got were the same and some are completely different! I also got a few different variations of some, which I know if common for snack boxes! I had different flavors of the gummies (red berries), hummus (traditional), granola (cranberry almond maple) and bean blend (garbanzo and soy)!

I didn’t get the protes chips, the raisens, skout bar or the ultima sampler. Instead I got Naan chips, figgy pops choco crunch supersnacks, a bite size dark chocolate bar and chocolate flax milk.

Obviously I’ve only gotten this one box, but so far I like it! I’m not vegan, or even vegetarian, but I’m trying to be a bit healthier with my snack choices and this box always looked good.

The ultima sample was the bonus item in the reviewed box. Every month you get one random bonus item. Mine was the flax milk. They are usually pretty good about sending what is advertised but they do substitute at times. I’ve enjoyed my sub.

I have had those exact gummies before and they were deliciously fruity and not overly sweet with a nice bite.
