Pet Treater April 2018 Review

There’s not a traditional information card with this subscription so there’s not always a stated theme, but you will occasionally see some commonalities running throughout the box contents. This month, I honestly wasn’t sure, but then Nyx doesn’t care about themes:

You get some pictures of dogs so that’s always fun.

Loving Pets Rice Chips (3 oz)

Loving Pets Rice Chips (3 oz) – Estimated Value $5

These seem to have been discontinued.  I couldn’t actually find an expiration date anywhere on this package, either.  So I am not really sure how old they are.  Loving Pets does do a good job of making treats with relatively few ingredients (here, pretty much just brown rice and rice flour), so there’s that.

Naturvet Quiet Moments Calming Aid + Melatonin (70 ct)

Naturvet Quiet Moments Calming Aid + Melatonin (70 ct) – Retail Value $11.99

I have tried the cat equivalent of this product and found that it didn’t do anything at all. (Actually, Sneaky wouldn’t even eat the cat version after the first few times I gave it to her, and she will normally eat anything.) The active ingredients are the same for both the cat and dog treats. But, this is an expensive treat and you get to try it here for much less than the normal price of the item, proportionally, so there’s less risk (this was good until next year according to the date on the package). This is grain free and free of animal proteins so I did go ahead and give one to Nyx. She ate it, but she’s on prednisone and will eat nearly anything. A proper dose for a dog her size is 4 soft chews, but I need to work up to that amount slowly for her. Also, she’s not a particularly anxious or stressed dog, so she doesn’t really need a supplement like this, and I’m not sure I’ll ever see much of an effect because of that.

Outward Hound Bottle Gigglers Monkey – Retail Value $13.20

This has a water bottle inside and it turns out, the crunching on that is even more annoying than the squeak from the snake toy (see below). So, of course, Nyx thought it was awesome. This is only available from third-party sellers on Amazon so take the price with a grain of salt. (But, it’s not unreasonable for a large dog toy, and it’s size appropriate.)

Emmy’s Gourmet Canine Creations Cookie

Emmy’s Gourmet Canine Creations Cookie – Estimated Value $1.35

You’ll usually get an Emmy’s cookie in Pet Treater, often seasonal (and sometimes exclusive!). This flower is nice for spring. I didn’t see this on the Emmy’s site so I just gave it the value of some of the other individual cookies.

Go Fresh Pet Travel Dog Bowl

Go Fresh Pet Travel Dog Bowl – Retail Value $11.25 (found here for $8.97)

If you take your dog on trips, this can be a convenient way to transport kibble without the mess. As it happens, Nyx has to eat canned food, exclusively, and this bowl would get gross pretty fast if I tried to feed her out of it. So, I’m going to pass this along to a relative who takes her dogs camping, as I think it will be a better fit for them.

Outward Hound Invincibles Snake Squeaker Toy (21” long, 3 squeakers) – Retail Value $16.99 (found here for $9.99)

Nyx likes this because it is annoying. And loud.  It has three squeakers and it does seem to be pretty durable – we even tugged with it a little bit.

Joy Mangano Miracle Clean Water Filter Set with Case

Joy Mangano Miracle Clean Water Filter Set with Case – Estimated Value $5

I couldn’t find this for sale on its own, only with the accompanying bottle. I am pretty sure Pet Treater broke up the set because looking at pictures of the whole set, with the bottle, I recognized the bottle from a past Pet Treater box. It is kind of uncool of them to break the set up like this, especially when they sent out the whole set here, here, and here. Anyway, I don’t honestly have much use for a water filter because I rarely drink plain water (the “you need 8 glasses a day" thing is bogus, anyway) so I am just going to pass this along to someone who will appreciate it more.

Nyx enjoyed this snake toy quite a bit. It was super annoying because of all the squeakers.  It seems pretty tough so far.

Verdict: There were 7 items in this month's Pet Treater box. I had to estimate the values for some of them, as a lot were closeouts, sold out, not available in the provided configurations, etc. Others were only available from third-party sellers on Amazon, so take those prices with a grain of salt. Although I can make educated guesses about the values, I don’t know how useful it is to provide a total. This subscription costs $24.99 on a month-to-month basis, so you are paying about $3.57 per item this month, which seems like a decent deal, even if one or two things don’t end up working for you. Large dog toys typically cost quite a bit more than $3.57 each, as do full packages of treats. The toys were size appropriate and durable this month, and those are always the main draws for Nyx with any dog subscription box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your subscription would start with the May box.

Coupon – Use coupon code DOGBED to get a free dog bed with the first month of the Pet Treater Dog Box. Or, if you'd rather save money off of this box, use coupon code PT-5OFF to save $5.00 off your first box.

Value Breakdown: At $24.99 for the box, you are paying about $3.57 per item.

Has anyone received the pet bed that comes along with a promo? If so could you describe it or give some information? Thank you

I got one way back a few years ago. I believe the size of bed you get depends on the size of dog you say you have, and that it varies based on what they have in stock at the time.

Ours had Scooby Doo graphics on it and was appropriate for a dog Nyx’s size but not very durable (she pulled a lot of stuffing out fairly early on). Some of the ones I saw back then for small dogs were a little different.

I hope this is taken as constructive feedback. This pet subscription is one of the BEST values of all the pet subs….it is difficult to get an unbiased understanding of the box because the reviewer interprets all items with her own large allergic dog. There are many other types of dogs out there. These reviews always have a negative slant. I would love to see a review that is unbiased and not based so much on their own dogs idiosyncrasies.

Because every reviewer has different circumstances, you are never truly going to have an unbiased opinion for any subscription. (Some people can’t say enough good things about Sugarfina, but I can’t eat it. I eat wheat all the time but some people have to have gluten free food. I am still happy to get highlighters in beauty boxes but plenty of people have had more than enough. Sunday Riley products burn my skin like no other, but some people swear by them. Chocolate melts in April in my mailbox but maybe not in upstate New York. Etc.) And for what it’s worth, the toys in this box are usually pretty big hits with my dog and nearly always size-appropriate (and some boxes don’t get that right at all) and I do mention that.

I do feel that it is appropriate to mention when things are closeouts, near expiration, or only available on eBay or through third-party sellers on Amazon, (or dangerous, as the case with one food item last month, based on my research) because those are important considerations for some people’s decisions to subscribe or not. Some people prefer new merchandise, or items that can easily be reordered, and other people place more importance on other factors.

Exactly! And with treats every dog is different anyways. My dog prefers freeze dried or chewy treats. He usually just carries around the hard crunchy ones until I throw them away… unless the cat is checking it out, then he’ll eat it lol. I like that you include a variety of information.

CrankyRebel

I would love to sign up with the free dog bed… but do you know what kind of dog bed it is? and how big is it?
