Nostalgic Candy Club April 2018 Review

April's theme was all about names! I loved the creativity that went into picking this month's theme. An informational insert was included in the box detailing the history of this month's chosen candies, along with vivid descriptions of their tastes and textures. This month's candies all had a name of sorts in their title.

I love the friendly, conversational tone of their write-up! It feels more like a passionate pal gushing about their favorite subject than a history lesson, which is really pleasant to read.

Now, onto the goodies:

Mary Jane Peanut Butter Candies – Buy an 11 oz. bag for $7.23

I remember seeing these in candy jars or mixed candy bags as a kid and always leaving them be—their packaging turned me off for some reason! The taste was a pleasant surprise, however. Each chew has a true peanut butter flavor, and it's not too peanut-y! Almost like Jif Peanut Butter (my favorite peanut butter forever and ever), just in a harder, much chewier form.

Jimmie Stix Chocolate-Peanut-Butter-Covered Pretzel Sticks, 1.8 oz. – Buy a 20-count box for $15.99

What's not to love about these? Chocolate ✓. Peanut butter ✓. Salty, crunchy pretzel ✓. The chocolate-peanut butter combo that surrounds the inside pretzel rod really tastes like a classic Reese's, so this bar was a delight! I really loved their retro packaging, too. Don't know who Jimmie is (or was), but his namesake has the perfect sweet 'n salty mixture going on.

Mr. Melon, Alexander the Grape, and Johnny Apple Treats Candies, 0.8 oz. – Buy a 24-count box of all three flavors for $6.99 each

These boxes were so cute. This is immediately what comes to mind when I think of retro candy! I started out tasting the watermelon-flavored "Mr. Melons," and my expectations were sky-high after that. They were delicious! They had the most perfect, juicy chew to them, and the flavor was so refreshing!

The other two boxes—"Alexander the Grape" and "Johnny Apple Treats"—were not for me. They had zero chew to them (intentionally so) and I'm really not a hard-candy kinda gal. For those who don't mind sucking or having to bite down on hard sweets, I'm sure these would be a treat! The apple flavor was the best, in my opinion. The grape flavor tasted rather artificial, as so many grape flavors unfortunately do.

Clark Bar, 2.1 oz. – Buy a 2-count pack for $3.33

My mom LOVED these growing up! These were always a last-minute add to our grocery store cart, so it was funny seeing them in a retro candy box! This is definitely a bar for peanut-lovers. Clark Bars don't have a smooth, creamy taste (like Jimmie Stix did!), but instead, have a toffee-like feel to them. The peanut butter taste is darker and deeper, and it sticks to your teeth like toffee.

I really loved the nostalgia factor of these, but their crisp peanut butter taste and texture isn't for me. I do love their chocolate covering, though!

Oh Henry Bar, 1.8 oz. – Buy a 2-count pack for $2.99

I cannot believe that up until now, I had never had an Oh Henry before. What was I doin'! These were so good! I'm not sure if they're easily available in grocery stores nowadays, but man, they should be. They have a RICH combination of chewy caramel, fudge, peanut-buttery nougat, and chocolate. It's so decadent, and the fact that they come in two mini bars makes 'em so cute!

Smarties – Buy a 26-count container for $3.99, Dubble Bubble Bubblegum – Buy a 137-count container for $9.99, Atomic Fireball – Buy a 19-count container for $3.49

These are the fun extras Nostalgic Candy Club sprinkles in with their showstopper candies each month. All classics! I had a lot of fun trying the Dubble Bubble for the first time in years. There's a reason it's the bubblegum standard—it's so good in texture, taste, and long-lasting flavor! I even blew a few bubbles. It brought me straight back to elementary school Fun Fairs!

The Smarties and the Atomic Fireball were appreciated, but I've never been a huge fan. I like my candy substantial, baby. I'll leave all the tiny candies for some other sweet-toothed gal!

Pixy Stix – Buy a 380-count bag for $17.99

Aw, Pixy Stix. The bright, bold, sugar-filled sticks that fueled every child into a hyper giggle-fest followed by a swift sugar coma. I forgot how tasty they were! The grape flavor was my favorite, with the blue-raspberry flavor comin' in at a close second. These were too fun to eat! (Remember Fun Dip candies? They tasted exactly like the powder that comes with those sugar sticks!)

Verdict: This month's Nostalgic Candy Club had some heartwarming, nostalgic favorites that brought me straight back to my childhood! They once again hit it outta the park in theme creativity, substantial selection, and interesting, retro candy history. I hope they always have this much fun in selecting a monthly theme. My favorite treat was the Jimmie Stix, hands down! That blessed combination of chocolate, peanut butter, and pretzels is simply divine.

To Wrap Up:

Value Breakdown: For $19.00, I received 5 larger candy bars or (Mary Janes and fruity candies counted as two individual wholes!) and 7 small pieces, which averages out to about $1.66 per piece. This felt like a better deal compared with last month due to the size of the chocolate bars and the many small candies that were included!

Oh Henrys are everywhere in Canada. Not a retro candy here. It is a now candy.

This is ridiculous expensive for what you get. At Old Time Candy you can buy an O Henry bar, a Clark bar and a Jimmie Stix bar for $1.29 each. Boxes of Johnny Apple Treats and Alexander the Grape are 35 cents each. The rest is penny candy which is now probably a nickel or even a dime in many places so let say around $1.30 for the lot. That makes this less than $6 worth of candy. Yes shipping cost has to be considered but it is still very costly. Besides those Mary Janes were always the candy I hoped I wouldn’t get in my trick or treat bag.
