Love With Food Deluxe Box April 2018 "Transform" Review

Usually, the theme from the information card doesn’t have much to do with the box. This month, there was just the word “Transform.” I do note that the box was practically bursting at the seams (see the second picture above) but it comes shrink-wrapped so it was never in any danger. Anyway, let’s just move on and talk about the snacks:

The box came with this information card. I miss the old information cards that said more about the snacks.

There are usually some coupons and/or offers with this subscription. There was an unusually large amount of paper this month.

Bare Baked Crunchy Cinnamon Banana Chips (1.3 oz) – Buy 6, 2.7-ounce bags for $21

Usually, banana chips are hugely high in calories and fat because they’re fried in coconut oil, which is delicious but maybe not so good if you are counting calories. These are just baked so you still get a nice banana flavor without all the calories. These are somewhat starchy and they did stick to my teeth a little, but overall, I was a fan.

Bare Baked Crunchy Cinnamon Banana Chips (1.3 oz)

Jana Banana Original Banana Bar with Peanut Butter (1.34 oz x 2) – Buy 12 bars for $13.90

These were soft textured bars that tasted just like I expected based on the name (i.e., like peanut butter and bananas). They do a little better with color in these (some banana snacks are a dark, unappealing brown color from oxidation) than with some competing products. You’ll usually get some kid-oriented snacks in Love with Food and I am guessing that’s where these come in this month.

Wai Lana Cassava Pops in Luau BBQ

Wai Lana Cassava Pops in Luau BBQ – Retail Value $1.39

I am pretty sure I’ve had cassava pops before, but not necessarily this flavor. These had a Pringles-like quality to them, probably because of how they are made (they’re more of a composite material instead of being straight slices of a root vegetable). The BBQ flavor was good but it really stays with you for awhile after eating.

Wai Lana Cassava Pops Volcano (0.8 oz)

Wai Lana Cassava Pops Volcano (0.8 oz) – Retail Value $1.39

I think these are supposed to be hot and spicy compared to the ones above, but neither my husband nor I could really tell the difference between the two flavors. (It’s OK, we liked both.)

Dancing Deer Baking Co. Cranberry Orange Walnut Oatmeal Breakfast Cookie (2 oz)

Dancing Deer Baking Co. Cranberry Orange Walnut Oatmeal Breakfast Cookie (2 oz) – Buy 12 Cookies for $24.99

I know this company because my in-laws have been sending us gift boxes from them around the holidays for the past few years. So I was not at all sad to see this. This is a soft cookie that is best eaten within a few days of receiving the box (considering how long it probably sat in the postal system to get to you) and I think they are delicious.

Avenue Sweets Apple Caramels (x2) – Buy 50 for $25 (found here for $19.99)

These are true dairy-based caramels but they are vegetarian. I love caramels and these were a little sticky but not so bad I thought they would pull off any dental work (I have some Invisalign “attachments” right now). I will not be buying more because the temptation is too great to just eat a whole bunch in one sitting.

Popped Chickpeatos in Zesty Ranch (0.8 oz)

Popped Chickpeatos in Zesty Ranch (0.8 oz) – Buy 36 Bags for $54

I feel like I have had these before but maybe not. Anyway, they are kind of similar to Snapea Crisps though they do have some chickpea flour in them as well (hence the name). They are about average in sodium for a snack of this type and they have a satisfying texture. Apparently, this ranch flavor is vegan, too.

Mrs. Thinster’s Cookie Thins in Chocolate Chip (1.5 oz) – Buy a 4 oz bag for $2.99

This is another item I feel like I’ve had before. I am not so big on hard packaged cookies (give me soft ones any day) but these did taste extraordinarily strongly of butter and I was a fan of that for sure.

Emmy’s Organics Coconut Cookies in Vanilla Bean (2 oz)

Emmy’s Organics Coconut Cookies in Vanilla Bean (2 oz) – Buy 12 packages for $29.95

Now, I know this is something I’ve received in a food subscription before because I started typing the name into Google to look for their website and this was the first autocomplete entry. But, I do like coconut and these hold together better than some other brands of coconut cookies.

Prince of Peace Island Lava Chocolate Crisps (4 oz) – Retail Value $3.99

I still remember when Prince of Peace was just selling good but inexpensive jasmine green tea (that I bought in boxes of 100 at Whole Foods). Now they are making all kinds of snacks. This is their answer to brownie brittle, I think, as that’s what this snack most resembles. It is probably about the smartest way that Love with Food could send chocolate as it gets warmer (they have a bad track record in my mailbox in summer) and I did enjoy these, especially when I encountered the chocolate chunks. If you have allergies, you may want to stay away – these have five of the eight major allergens (lacking only fish, shellfish, and peanuts).

Westminster Bakers Co. Oyster Crackers (0.5 oz) – Buy 6, 8 oz boxes for $17.95

Every once in awhile you’ll get something weirdly plain and common in Love with Food (like Biscoff or saltines). This month it was oyster crackers. I would strongly suggest putting these in soup or something because they are just kind of bland otherwise (not bad, and fine in terms of texture, but not super flavorful, either).

Torie and Howard Chewy Fruities (4 oz)

Torie and Howard Chewy Fruities (4 oz) – Retail Value $3.99

So I can’t eat Starburst because they contain gelatin, but I *can* eat these. The flavors aren’t the same (they are things like Meyer lemon + raspberry and pomegranate + tangerine) but they are pretty good to me. They are only colored with beet juice and turmeric so the ones I’ve had so far are all a sickly peach color, but they taste great and that’s what matters.

Tru Women Chocolate Chunk Cookie Dough Plant Based Protein Bar (1.69 oz) – Buy 12 bars for $33.48

I think these have been reformulated and that the packaging has also changed (and Tru may be offloading old stock on subscription boxes). I’ve linked to and used the price from the page for the current product. The protein is from brown rice and/or pea (depending on the flavor) and it’s not too gritty. I’m honestly not sure why these are marketed towards women only. I actually did enjoy the flavor although I don’t know how well the new product matches the old so I can’t say what you would get if you ordered today.

Verdict: There were 14 items in the April 2018 Love with Food Deluxe Box, which works out to about $1.43 per item (I am counting the two caramels as one item since they’re small). That is about average for Love with Food. This was actually a good month for me as a reasonable number of the items were new for me and the repeats were generally things I like quite a bit.

I’m in Canada and sometimes my box has some variations – this month I didn’t get the macaroon (though I have before), I got Bakery on Main gluten-free granola in cranberry almond maple, which I got a couple months ago. I also didn’t get the banana chips but I don’t know if I got something in place of it, if I did I ate it and forgot about it.

This box used to say that they ship internationally. Now, it lists the specific countries it ships to and the country I live in isn’t listed. I am so sad. I was getting ready to sign up.
I will reach out to them to see if there is anyway they can ship to additional countries…
Thanks for the review!
