Degustabox April 2018 Review

DegustaBox Info sheet

Degustabox always has a really nice info sheet that goes over the theme (this month: Roadtrip) and each item included in the box with their retail values.

recipe on the back of DegustaBox Info sheet

The content on the back changes from month to month, this time being a recipe using the La Tortilla Factory Barbacoa Slow Cooker Sauce.

Zeigler's Mango Citrus Carrot Fruit and Veggie Juice Blend

Zeigler's Mango Citrus Carrot Fruit and Veggie Juice Blend, 33.8 oz. - Listed Retail Value $3.99

It's nice to see a beverage that's 100% juice (from concentrate) in the box this month, especially such a large full size. For every 8 ounces, there's a full serving of vegetables and 100% of the daily suggested serving of vitamin C. Plus there's no sugar added and there are no artificial colors or flavors. I personally find 100% juice to be intense, but I know it's a good way to get all sorts of needed nutrients. In addition to all of the veggies in the title, this one has sweet potato juice concentrate which is maybe why I'm not loving the taste.

ALO Spring Mixed Berry Aloe Vera Juice Drink

ALO Spring Mixed Berry Aloe Vera Juice Drink, 16.9 oz. - Retail Value $1.73 (found here for $1.56)

Oh wow, this drink is awesome. It's so refreshing and fruity and also has fun chunks of jelly-like aloe (pulp) in it which reminds me of bubble tea. This one is 25% juice and contains cane sugar and blueberry, cranberry, red grape, and mulberry juice concentrates.

Goya Plantain Chips Goya Plantain Chips on a plate

Goya Plantain Chips, 5 oz. - Retail Value $2.39 (found here for $2.19)

Plantain Chips are a great alternative to potato chips if you're looking for a different type of salty savory snacks that have a bit of a nutty taste. I love these chips and the original flavor is probably my favorite. They're nice and thin too so they're not too hard but have a great crunch.

Angie's Boom Chicka Pop Real Butter Popcorn Angie's Boom Chicka Pop Real Butter Popcorn on a plate

Angie's Boom Chicka Pop Real Butter Popcorn, 0.6 oz. - Buy a larger 4.4 oz bag for $3.29 (found here for $3.00)

If you like popcorn but don't want to spend the time popping it yourself, this is a great brand to reach for. Nothing sketchy in the ingredients here, just popcorn, clarified butter, sunflower oil, and sea salt. I don't find this to be overly salted or buttery either.

Angie's Boom Chicka Pop Cheddar Cheese Popcorn Angie's Boom Chicka Pop Cheddar Cheese Popcorn on a plate

Angie's Boom Chicka Pop Cheddar Cheese Popcorn, 0.6 oz. - Buy a larger 4.4 oz. bag for $3.29 (found here for $3.00)

The cheddar cheese version of the Boom Chicka Pop Popcorn is popped with sunflower oil just like the other flavor but made with real cheese + cheese seasoning that really packs a cheesy punch. If you want a little flavor going on with your snacking, this one for you.

2 bags of Pop Chips Nutter Puffs Pop Chips Nutter Puffs on a plate

Popchips Nutter Puffs, 1 oz. x2 - Buy a 24 ct case for $24.99

I'll admit I was a little unsure trying these since most puffed snacks are cheesy instead of peanut butter flavored, but they are REALLY good. It's pretty much exactly like spreading peanut butter on a rice cake which has been a great go-to snack for me while camping or trying to be slightly healthier. There are only three ingredients: peanut butter, yellow corn, and peanut flour. Score!

La Tortilla Factory White Corn and Wheat Tortillas

La Tortilla Factory Handmade Style White Corn & Wheat Tortillas, 8 ct. - Listed Retail Value $3.19 (Buy a pack of 12 for $33.97)

My beloved La Tortilla Factory Tortillas! Degustabox is where we first met and I am so happy to see these again because they've become my favorite tortillas to buy at the grocery store. They don't quite fit the road trip theme, but I'm not going to complain.

La Tortilla Factory Cocina Fresca Barbacoa Slow Cooker Sauce back of La Tortilla Factory Cocina Fresca Barbacoa Slow Cooker Sauce

La Tortilla Factory Cocina Fresca Barbacoa Slow Cooker Sauce Starter - Retail Value $5.95

Oh, heck yea- this is a great item, especially to go with the above tortillas! If you've read some of my past food-related reviews you know I am a huge taco fan. I also happen to love using slow cookers, so the fact that I just need to buy some beef to have a full meal is wonderful. I haven't gotten a chance to use this yet, but I trust this brand and the sound of smoky chipotle, Mexican herbs and lime are divine!

Country Archer Jerky Co. Mango Habanero Beef Jerky Country Archer Jerky Co. Mango Habanero Beef Jerky on a plate

Country Archer Jerky Co. Mango Habanero Beef Jerky, 1.5 oz. - Retail Value $3.00

Y'all know I love a good jerky, but I get squeamish when fruit gets involved with meat. Even though this is quite spicy which I love in a dried meat, I can't personally get behind the sweetness of the mango that is super evident in the flavor. Otherwise, this has a good texture and the 1.5 oz size is great for snacking.

Torie and Howard Chewie Fruities Organic Candy Chews three wrapped Torie and Howard Chewie Fruities Organic Candy Chews on a plate

Torie and Howard Chewie Fruities Organic Candy Chews, 1.27 oz. Trial Size - Buy a 4 oz bag for $3.99 (found here for $2.97)

Okay so these are the organic version of Starbursts and are slightly less opaque in sight, so they look more like they're made with actual fruit juice. They taste really fruity and are made with organic cane sugar and organic brown rice syrup. This trial size came with six chews in three flavors: pomegranate & nectarine, meyer lemon & raspberry, and blood orange & honey. I'd normally go with red or pink colored Starbursts being my favorite, but here I have to say that the yellow meyer lemon & raspberry flavor reigns supreme. Highly recommended!

2 packages of Amazin' Raisin flavor infused strawberry and lemon infused raisins 2 packages of Amazin' Raisin flavor infused strawberry infused raisins on a plate 2 packages of Amazin' Raisin flavor infused lemon infused raisins on a plate

Amazin' Raisins in Lemon and Strawberry (1 pack of each), 1.3 oz. - Buy a 5-pack for $5.99 (found here for $4.75)

I don't have anything against raisins, I just never really choose to eat them. These all natural Amazin' Raisins have been boosted with lemon and strawberry flavors respectively which I personally don't feel brings anything to the table. I think if you don't care for the taste of raisins you can just eat dehydrated strawberries or a different citrus fruit. In the words of the great Shania Twain, "That don't impress me much".

Fini Shock Tongues Candy Sour Belts Fini Shock Tongues Candy Sour Belts on a plate

Fini Shock Tongues Candy Sour Belts, 2.5 oz. - Listed Retail Value $1.09

Yeaaaa buddy. I go back and forth with being into candy, and when I like it, I normally go for something chocolatey. However, these sour belts are really tasty and don't go overboard on the sour aspect. I love the packaging and rainbow of colors included.

Fini Mini Kollisions Fini Mini Kollisions on a plate

Fini Mini Kollisions, 2.5 oz. - Listed Retail Value $1.09

How fun are these different shapes? The second offering from Spanish company Fini has all sorts of shapes and colors included, but unfortunately doesn't have a taste that appeals to me. They're a bit on the plastic-y side and aren't as good as the sour belts.

Fini Fizzy Tornados 2 Fini Fizzy Tornados on a plate

Fini Fizzy Tornados, 2.5 oz. - Listed Retail Value $1.09

The third Fini item and final item of the box is a package of Fizzy Tornadoes. This pack comes with six straw-like rainbow candies that are similar to the tongues but without the sourness and all of the berry sweetness. I'm not getting too much fizz, but it does say it's only "a bit", so I'll have to agree.

Verdict: Degustabox this month was clearly very snack-heavy which is to be expected with the road trip theme. There was a good mix of healthy and totally sugary items, and overall I enjoyed most of them. I do appreciate that they still included the meal items like tortillas and the slow cooker sauce starter which usually end up being my favorite items from any box.

I found 8 hours on high to be very odd for a slow cooker recipe — but I did it. Made the meat very very tough and you don’t put much liquid in with it, either. It made my house smell like HEAVEN but the meat was shoe leather. I’m wondering if it is a printing mistake and should be on Low? No other slow cooker recipes say high for 8 hours. But others aren’t commenting this?

I also love bubble tea but found the chunky aloe drink very weird. I loved the organic fruit chews.

I would never cook something on high for 8 hours. The rule of thumb for me is high for 4 or low for 8. You should ask for a new packet and recook.

The crock pot sauce was fantastic. We ended up with more meat than tortillas, so for other meals i put the meat on a bun with some of the picked red onions i made from a previous box and it was quite a nice loose meat sandwich. I like raisins in general and i liked the lemon version but just thought the strawberry was eh… The peanut butter puff things were by far my favorite and I can’t find them at my local grocery… ;( . the jerky is ok, but i’m not big on jerky in general. i could do without the candy (bring on the chocolate stuff, just not this type of candy). also i liked the plantain chips- i will totally buy these next time i need chips.

I’ve also gotten something in a Degusta box that I have never, ever been able to find anywhere near my. (Cinnabon popcorn)

My kids and I love this box. It’s always a treat to open it each month. They enjoyed the candy, peanut butter puffs, and popcorn. I generally like a snack heavy box. I’m glad to see other people think the crockpot sauce would work with chicken because we don’t eat beef. The raisins were a huge miss for everyone but we aren’t big fans of regular raisins.

Jody

I don’t think the sauce would be good with chicken. This one is for beef for sure. It was very tasty and I don’t even even eat beef on a regular basis.
The candies were so unique to me I ate them all without showing my kids!
I love this box.

To anyone who tried the slow cooker sauce, do you think it would be good with chicken ?

Christine Martinez

I have tried it with pork but not chicken. I’m sure it would taste great. This sauce is awesome.

Awesome thank you !! I’m excited to try it !

The slow cooker sauce was delicious, and I topped my tacos with a mango pineapple salsa which I highly recommend.

My son and I split this box every month. This time, he ate all the candy stuff and I ate the rest LOL. He liked the raisins. I would think the raisins could be more for people who like raisins, but want a little something different or extra for the flavor. I LOVED the peanut butter puffs. I’m usually the same about fruit and meat, but to me, the spiciness of the jerky balanced pretty well with the mango. We haven’t tried the slow cooker sauce yet either, mainly because I’m looking for a smaller roast than what my store had in stock. I did wonder if the seasoning would be good with pork or chicken?
