Bookroo Board Book Box closed

Bookroo is a subscription service that sends books for children every month. They have a board book plan (for ages 0-2.5), a picture book plan (for ages 2.5-6) and a chapter book plan (for ages 7-10). They offer the option to alternate between picture and board books each month which is great if you have children in different age groups like I do.

Bookroo March 2018 Review

wrapped books

This month was Bookroo's 3rd birthday so all of the wrapping paper was birthday themed which my kiddos really enjoyed..

This insert gives a brief description of their book picks for the month and also includes a link for some extension activities. The extension activities are cute and easy to do and really help take the books a step further which is nice!

If You See a Cow by Richard Powell - Retail Value $4.99

This was a simple, interactive book about farm animals in which you lift the flap to reveal the sounds they make. There were only 5 pages so this was a short book, but the large flaps were great for little fingers to lift.

My son (20 months old) loves animals so he was very excited for this book and enjoyed looking at the pictures and saying the sounds with me. I thought it was certainly cute, but it lacked originality for me. There are many animal sound books out there and this one doesn’t particularly stand out.

How Do You Say I Love You? by Hannah Eliot

How Do You Say I Love You? by Hannah Eliot - Retail Value $7.99 (found here for $7.18)

This book explored how to say I Love You in various languages from different countries around the world. I thought it was nicely done and very educational for little ones (and myself!).

Each page featured a different country and really nice illustrations of scenes from those countries. They talked about what they might do in each place and made it very clear how to say I love you. The pronunciation guides and rhyming text were helpful and much needed because, boy, some of those are hard to say! We had a lot of fun reading this and it was really cute to hear my son try to repeat some of these.

Landmarks by Katie Wilson - List Price $6.99 (found here for $8.76)

This book really tied in well with the other book since it showed different landmarks around the world. There was a little bit of overlap with some of the places, so that was nice to be able to relate them to one another. From Amazon:

Applying the tactile features of Montessori teaching, this innovative board book uses enhanced spot UV treatments to teach little ones about famous monuments from around the world.

The only thing I could figure this meant was that this book had a glossy finish. I didn’t really understand what else would be tactile about it, but maybe I’m missing something?

The book itself was a little lackluster for me. There wasn’t much text and although I liked the illustrations, there wasn’t much to talk about so it was just reading off the landmark and location. Nothing too exciting for a 0-2.5-year-old. If there had been just a little bit more to point out or talk about on each page, I would have appreciated it much more.

Verdict: This was my first board book box from Bookroo and it didn’t wow me like I thought it would. I do love how the books come individually wrapped in bright, fun paper and are held with an elastic ribbon- the presentation is great. As for the books, I think How Do You Say I Love You was a great book, but Landmarks was just a little too basic for me. If we hadn’t received them at the same time, I don’t think I would have appreciated Landmarks at all. I do like that they had an animal book that was simple, interactive and easily appealed to the target age range of 0-2.5 years old. The retail value of the books was $19.97 which isn’t that great for a $24.95 box ($19.95 a month + $5 shipping), especially considering I didn’t find two of the books to be anything special. I really enjoyed their picture book box though so I am hoping the next board book box we receive will feel a little bit more special!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
