The snack theme this month is  "Blossoming Spring".

Bokksu April 2018 Blossoming Spring

This portion speaks to the period in spring when the cherry blossom bloom can be enjoyed. It mentions that Japanese snacks are known for their seasonality, and as such, April's box highlights springtime flavors like strawberry and Japanese plum.

 Bokksu April 2018 Packing List

Here we have the snack list! Super helpful for someone like me who isn't too familiar with Japanese snacks. I also like that they explicitly call out common allergens that each snack contains!

Bokksu April 2018 Sakura Rusk Bokksu April 2018 Sakura Rusk Cracker

Sakura Rusk x 2

It doesn't take an expert to figure out that rusk is meant to be enjoyed with tea. I mean, it just looks like it's waiting to be dipped into a warm drink! This kind is flavored with salted sakura petals, which give it a faint floral flavor. It was unexpected and delightful!

Bokksu April 2018 White Strawberry

Bokksu April 2018 Dried Strawberry

White Strawberry x 2

I was really excited to munch on this as soon as I pulled it out of the package! My coworker just returned from a trip to Japan and brought me a very similar snack to this, a kind that's covered in matcha. It's freeze-dried so it's really light and crunchy and it's been infused with white chocolate, so it has a textured sweetness to it. Loved it!

Bokksu April 2018 Ume Sable Bokksu April 2018 Ume Sable Cookie

Bokksu April 2018 Cookie

Ume Sablé x 2

This was perhaps the most straightforward snack in the box, with the flavor I expected the most. It's a biscuit-type cookie, flavored with ume, or plum blossom. I didn't detect much floral flavor in it, and it wasn't overly sweet. I liked it!

Bokksu April 2018 Baked Chocolate Strawberry

Bokksu April 2018 Chocolate Strawberry Cup

Bokksu April 2018 Strawberry Dessert

Baked Chocolate Strawberry x 2

This treat was a fun one! I expected to cut into it and find some sort of filling, but it was more like a cookie than a truffle. As you can see, it's crumbly, and its flavor is sort of a white chocolate-strawberry combo.

Bokksu April 2018 Sakura Chocolate Crepe

Bokksu April 2018 Pink Wafer

Bokksu April 2018 Sakura Wafer

Sakura Chocolate Crepe x 3

This snack looked so very appealing to me after unwrapping it from its package. It has an inviting rose color to it, and its flavor and consistency were nice 'n' light. It's pretty much a chocolate-covered wafer, but more like white chocolate with a hint of strawberry. Super yummy!

Bokksu April 2018 Spring Rice Crackers

Bokksu April 2018 Rice Crackers

Spring Rice Crackers

At first, I thought this variety of rice crackers were probably all one flavor, just with different colors and shapes for fun, but it turns out they all have their own unique flavor! The variety includes sour plum, matcha, shrimp, purple sweet potato, turmeric, salt, chili pepper, and soy sauce. So, not sweet at all, despite the pastel colors and springy shapes. I was so-so about these crackers, which surprised me because I usually appreciate a good savory snack.

Bokksu April 2018 Sakura Shrimp Kakimochi

Bokksu April 2018 Shrimp Kakimochi

Sakura Shrimp Kakimochi x 2

Okay, so I totally expected this snack to have a super soft, spongy consistency. Doesn't it look like it would? Instead, it's puffed with air and a little crunchy. I am not at all a seafood-eater so when I saw this snack had a shrimp flavor, I went into tasting it cautiously. While it isn't really fishy, it also isn't for me. Perhaps it's just that its flavor is unfamiliar and an acquired taste.

Bokksu April 2018 Hand-baked Butter SenbeiBokksu April 2018 Butter Senbei

Hand-baked Butter Senbei x 2

Now, this was a savory snack I did enjoy. It's a buttery cookie-cracker type thing and it's meant to be paired with this month's tea. It has a really neutral flavor that I dug!

Bokksu April 2018 Suppa Mucho Sour PlumBokksu April 2018 Snack Sticks

Suppa Mucho Sour Plum

I thought I must be misunderstanding this snack when I took my first impression from the packaging, but no, these are indeed potato sticks that have a sweet flavoring to them! They're dusted with sour plum sprinklings and are oddly amazing. It's like an update to the classic sweet-and-savory flavor that some people love!

Bokksu April 2018 Pocky Double Strawberry Bokksu April 2018 Strawberry PockyBokksu April 2018 PockyBokksu April 2018 Pink Pocky

Pocky Double Strawberry (Classic Bokksu Exclusive) x 3

Going into this box, Pocky and mochi were the only Japanese snack I could name off the top of my head. As much as I truly enjoyed exploring the new treats found in this box, it was also exciting to find a familiar one. These Pocky sticks have an awesomely creamy strawberry sweetness on them, and unlike the classic flavor, they went big with the icing part! They practically look like corn dogs, don't they? Just one of these guys totally satisfied my sweet tooth, and there are 3 packages of 4 sticks included, so this snack should last me a gloriously long time (hopefully).

Bokksu April 2018 Sakura Love TeaBokksu April 2018 Berry TeaBokksu April 2018 Sakura Berry Tea
Sakura Love Tea

This month's tea had a distinct berry scent as I brewed it. Its cherry flavor is light, and I really enjoyed sipping it after trying all my snacks as a way of toning down my palate while still maintaining a hint of springy sweetness.

Verdict: For someone with admittedly picky tastes, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this month's Bokksu snacks! I liked all the sweet ones better than the savories, which I think was a combination of my perpetual sweet tooth and my knowing what to expect a little more from the sweet snacks. As for the overall experience, I was extremely impressed. The curation and packaging of every aspect of this sub box is beautifully executed! For $39, I received 11 different snacks, and 23 total items in this box.
