BarkBox is the most popular dog subscription box. They now offer a Super Chewer Box version for dogs who are destructive. If you have read any of my dog subscription reviews, you will know that my Rottweiler, Nyx, is an expert at finding the weak points in toys and tearing them apart, so this seemed perfect for her. (For reference, Nyx weighs about 87 pounds right now.)

This review is of the Large Super Chewer, $39 a month, box.

Super Chewer April 2018 “Barkbeard’s Treasure” Review

BarkBox custom produces most of their treats and toys, so everything always nicely revolves around a theme:

The information card varies month-to-month in terms of style but I definitely appreciate the creativity that goes into it.

This month, there was a safety card about toy types and supervising your dog. I am reminded of this tweet, although I suppose it is possible the folks at BarkBox decided on their own to include this card and were not prompted by any customer actions.  But on a serious note, yes, please do supervise your dog with any new chew or toy!

Yo Ho Ho Pawrate’s Bounty Treats (5 oz)

Yo Ho Ho Pawrate’s Bounty Treats (5 oz)

Many of this month’s items were not in the Barkbox Shop yet, but they’re custom for Barkbox, so I can’t provide outside links. At any rate, the primary proteins in these treats are beef and bacon and they have a softer texture (what you would call “semi-moist” with cat treats, but I’ve never seen that terminology applied to dog treats). These are also grain free and made in the USA.

Lamb Ho! Treats (4.5 oz)

Lamb Ho! Treats (4.5 oz)

This is the second bag of treats for the month (you’ll pretty much always get two), also not in the Barkbox Shop yet. The primary protein here is lamb and they are free of wheat, corn, and soy, but not totally grain free. Again, they are made in the USA.

Skull and Toss Bones

Skull and Toss Bones

This is similar to the paint can toy from last month. And like that one, Nyx went straight for the rope rather than the rubber part. But I guess that doesn’t matter – what’s most important is that she enjoyed herself and that this should work for dogs that prefer rubber toys as well as dogs that prefer rope toys.

Iron Bones Redbird

Iron Bones Redbird

There is a parrot toy in the Barkbox Shop, but I think this one is different, and designed specifically for heavy chewers, because inside is a rubber core (Nyx hasn’t fully exposed it yet) instead of a full-body tube squeaker. That one is priced at $12 so I would put this one a little higher. This is one of the toys from the safety card that has an outer coating that is meant to be removed as part of play so you’ll need to be on the lookout for that.

Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Pig Ear Chew

Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Pig Ear Chew – Retail Value $3

You’ll often get a chew of this type in the BarkBox Super Chewer Box. (Other items have included tracheas, bully sticks, and the like.) Definitely supervise your dog with these as I have seen dogs chew a little to soften them and then try to eat them whole. Anyway, this is a single-ingredient item that is made in the USA!

Etta Says 10” Liver Chew – Retail Value $4

This one is also made in the USA as well and has both beef ligament and beef liver blended together. I think this is a little more difficult to soften and swallow whole, but all destructive dogs are destructive in slightly different ways, so still pay attention. You’ll see a fair number of Etta Says chews in this box.

Barkbeard’s Bandana

I didn’t see this in the Barkbox Shop, but it is a fun inclusion. It was big enough to fit around a Rottweiler neck, which is also nice. You can see Nyx modeling it below.

Here is Nyx modeling the bandana. No, I don’t know why one of her eyes is closed.

Here are some pictures of Nyx with the skull and crossbones toy. She was mostly interested in chewing on the rope. Bonus Mr. Kitty photobomb in the last picture.

Verdict: I couldn’t calculate a value for this month’s BarkBox Super Chewer Box since none of the main treats or toys were available in the BarkBox shop. But there are still some conclusions that can be drawn: (1) The contents of this box are pretty representative of what you would get if you were to sign up in a given month (two different types of toys, two treats, two chews); (2) Most items are custom-made for BarkBox; (3) The toys have, so far, been pretty durable.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would be May's.

Coupon - Use code SUBADDICTION to get a free month added with the purchase of a 6 or 12-month subscription plan!

Value Breakdown: At $39 for the box, you are paying about $6.50 per item. Although some of the chew prices are below that, the toy prices are almost certainly well above that. (When I can calculate values, I usually get $50-55+ for this subscription.)

Obviously one eye is closed because Nyx is a pirate. You can’t be a pirate without squinting one.

Arrrrrrr….try it.
