Vet Pet Box Dog March 2018 Box

VetPet Box is a subscription for dogs or cats with toys, treats, and other supplies curated by veterinarians.  Choose from boxes for petite (up to 15 pounds), small (15-30 pounds), medium (31-50 pounds), large (51-100 pounds) or giant (100+ pounds) and there are also options to select for heavy chewers and dogs with food allergies.  This is a review of the large dog box for heavy chewers and dogs with food allergies.  My dog, Nyx, is an 87-pound Rottweiler who is definitely a power chewer; she also has inflammatory bowel disease so we avoid pretty much all grains and most animal proteins.

VetPet Box Dog March 2018 Review

Please note: This subscription is somewhat customized based on preferences you select when you sign up. So, what you’ll see below are treats for a food-sensitive dog and toys for a heavy chewer:

Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box.

And the last piece of literature was this educational brochure. This time the theme was about oral health. Thankfully, Nyx has good teeth. My last dog sure didn’t.

Vet Pet Box Dog March 2018 Flavorit

Flavorit Mint Infused Nylon Bone, XL – Retail Value $6.68 (found on sale here for $5.38)

If I had to pick a favorite kind of toy for Nyx, it would be a flavored nylon chew. These last a couple of sessions with her and she absolutely loves them. We’ve received this brand in a lot of dog subscription boxes in various flavors and the performance is always consistent. You can spread something over this (it will get into the holes) but Nyx enjoys these just fine without anything extra.

Vet Pet Box Dog March 2018 Toothbrush

Virbac CET Oral Hygiene Kit – Retail Value $15.88 (found on sale here for $11.14)

You’ll always get a few health-related items with this subscription. I actually do have a toothbrush for Nyx but haven’t used it in forever. This is a good reminder. She sometimes gets bad breath because she can only eat wet food. Please be aware that this toothpaste contains poultry digest, which may not work for dogs with food sensitivities. This brand also makes – or at least they used to – a vanilla-flavored toothpaste.

Vet Pet Box Dog March 2018 Treats

Le Petit Treat Crème de Menthe, 8 oz. – Retail Value $9.99

These are grain free and also soy-free, and they don’t have any animal protein. This means they are A-OK for Nyx! She was quite excited to get one. I’m not sure I can feed them at a rate that would actually improve her breath (they have mint and rosemary), but it’s so rare that she can have the treats in a box that these were exciting, nonetheless.

Vet Pet Box Dog March 2018 Tosser

Jolly Pets Jolly Tuff Tosser, 4” – Retail Value $9.70 (found on sale here for $8.59)

These are definitely durable as we receive this brand (and sometimes this specific toy) fairly regularly in dog subscription boxes. You can put treats in here, or what I like to do ever since I realized Nyx can have peanut butter is put just a little bit of peanut butter inside (there are holes on both ends so your dog’s tongue can’t get stuck by suction). The ridges are supposed to help clean teeth, as well.

Vet Pet Box Dog March 2018 Chlorhexidine

Clenz-a-Dent Chlorhexidine Rinse from CEVA, 8 fl oz. – Retail Value $17.75 (found on sale here for $11.79)

Chlorhexidine is in a lot of oral health products for pets. It is antimicrobial. (My old dog used to get chlorhexidine chews, but those are out for Nyx due to her IBD.) Before I use this on Nyx, I have to do a bit of investigation to find out what the flavor compounds are (it just says “flavors” on the package). I like the inclusion of the tip here as that will definitely help get to back teeth since of course, a dog can’t swish this around. Use sparingly until you see how your dog will handle this since some of it definitely will get swallowed.

Here are some pictures of Nyx with the bone toy. She loves, loves, loves nylon chews, and they don’t seem to aggravate her IBD.

This treat had ingredients she could eat. She was so excited!

Verdict: I calculated a value of $60.00 for March’s VetPet Box. That is around $11 more than the cost of the box. I like the format of the box, focusing on a particular health issue each month and choosing items (especially with the dog version of the box) that work well with the theme. This is one of the more expensive dog boxes but I feel better knowing that the items were selected by vets (and there is a lot of customization available for chewing habits, food allergies, and sensitivities, etc.).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive the March box. Also, due to customization (dog size/chewing habits/dietary issues), boxes may vary from month-to-month.

Value Breakdown: At $49 a month for this box, you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Nylon bone: $5.46
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste: $12.97
  • Treats: $8.16
  • Treat-dispensing toy: $7.92
  • Chlorhexidine rinse: $14.49

I posted before that my girls can only have Kongs because they’re the only toys they can’t chew through and destroy in minutes. I spoke too soon. My ladies were taking turns on a Kong last night. Like, they have never given these balls as much attention EVER! There were four Kongs laying around the living room but they were only interested in one. Didn’t surprise me. They only want what the other has. My husband and I were so happy to have them occupied because some nights they drive us bonkers! It was dark. I turned the light on a bit after they went to town chewing away… black chunks all over my carpet.

They chewed up a Kong. THEY CHEWED UP A KONG!!!

I can’t give these babies anything.

Dog treats are changing enough these days that there are usually a few each month she can have. This month so far I think we are up to 4 or 5 different kinds.
