Target Arts & Crafts Box: CraZGels March 2018 Kit

Target Arts _ Crafts Kit Subscription for Kids Review March 2018 review

CraZArt 3D CraZGels Sticker Art Set - Retail Value $18.99

The kit that arrived this month was a gel sticker art kit. The kit came with everything needed to make 50 different sticker designs. This set is designed for ages 6 and up and to me it seems pretty geared towards girls, but there are designs and colors that boys may enjoy as well.

The kit included 10 different gel paints to use including two shades with glitter in them (gold and purple).

There were 4 sheets with the 50 different sticker designs and two clear sheets to use for tracing. I thought all of the designs were really cute and appropriate for ages 6 and up. They were a good mix of animals, phrases and various objects that would appeal to kids. Some designs were more detailed than others which would be great for older kids.

The instructions were pretty basic and simple: you choose a design, tape your clear tracing sheet over it and then use the gels to color in the sticker shape. They provide some tips such as working from the top down so that you don’t smear your work and also filling in large areas before smaller areas. The only advice they didn’t give that would have been helpful would have been how thick the gels should have been.

This was my first attempt. As you can see, I didn’t follow directions and started with a smaller area first, but the real issue was in the consistency of the gel itself. The green gel was very goopy and really hard to get out of the tube. I had to use a paper clip to clear the hole and even stir it around a big, but after a few minutes of just trying to cover the top of the octopus, I decided to start over with a different color for its body.

The second attempt was using the blue gel. This one worked much better, but it was actually a lot runnier and so I wasn’t sure how much to apply to my design. I made sure that all of the colors were touching and that there were no gaps as the directions said to do and then I let my design dry overnight. In the morning it was dry but still looked very shiny.

Unfortunately, I don’t think I put the gel on thick enough or else the gel itself was too watery and I lost some of my octopus tentacles when I went to peel my sticker off. You can see how the blue was pretty uneven in spots when I applied it to a different surface. It did stick to the window very easily although I don’t think I would have been able to reapply it to another surface as it says since it was so delicate.

I decided to try this again with my daughter the next night and she was really excited to do it, but unfortunately, she couldn’t get many of the gels out by herself (she is only 3 though, so that’s understandable!). My husband actually applied the green part to the pizza and it took him a very long time to just get that little bit out and you can see it was still very lumpy. I think he was even getting a little frustrated- especially once my daughter told him he was taking too long.

These are the stickers dry the next morning - a front and a back view. Again, the inconsistency in the gels is apparent. The purple glitter gel was so easy to work with the night before and I used what I thought was a good amount to ensure an even thickness on my smiley, but this one actually dried too stiffly and ripped when I tried to remove it from the tracer.

These ended up just being really frustrating to work with due to the fact that each gel was a different consistency. There were maybe 3 colors that actually were the right consistency while the others were either too thick or too runny. It was really hard to squeeze out the gels from the tubes and so we weren’t even able to attempt any of the more complex patterns. I can’t imagine that a 6-year-old or even an older kid would enjoy this activity since it was frustrating to adults to try and squeeze enough gel out of the tubes.

The Verdict: This month the Target Art & Craft Kit Subscription was so great in theory; such a simple idea with a lot of flexibility in what you can create, but unfortunately, the gels just didn’t work the way they should have for us and we weren’t able to create the promised product. Pretty disappointing, but hopefully, this was just our kit and anyone else who received it had a great time making their gel stickers!

The retail value is $18.99 which is $4 more than what we paid for it. As long as your kit is working well, I think that’s a decent value this month!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
