Play! by Sephora is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription. Each month they send you six samples, a PLAY! BOOK of tips and tricks, and a PLAY! PASS for in-store learning.

I used to work at Sephora so I naturally couldn’t resist this subscription!

Every month they include all of the samples in a mini bag with a different design.

FYI - The box variation I received this month is box ending in #364. To find out which box you’re receiving at the beginning of each month, follow these instructions:

If you log in through a browser, not the app, and go to my account > account details > online orders and open the play! Order Details (it was dated 11/1 for me), you can see the “item number” next to the image.

Play! by Sephora March 2018 #364 Review

Each box comes with a foldable info sheet. The front always has a design related to the theme (Festival Beauty Vibe this month), and the Play! Pass.

Each box comes with a Play! Pass, which is a card you can use at Sephora (in-store) to get 50 extra rewards points, and you can also get one-on-one tutorials and tips of products from a Sephora consultant.

The opposite side of the info sheet has pictures of each item and details about what they are, how to use them, and why they think you’ll love them.

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, .08 fl oz – Estimated Value $11 (buy a full-size liner for $22)

This is one of my top liquid liners! My #1, ride or die liquid liner is Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner. This Stila liner has a nice, opaque formula and a fine felt tip that allows for a lot of control and precision.

The reason I prefer the Kat Von D over this Stila is that I do notice some bleeding into creases with Stila’s formula – although it bleeds much less applied to the eye than here on my wrist. (Also, FYI, Kat Von D’s liners have a brush tip vs Stila’s felt tip. It’s a small difference but I personally prefer the brush tip.)

Bobbi Brown Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm, .17 fl oz – Estimated Value $11.56 (buy a full-size bottle for $68)

I adore illuminating products like this for my dry skin. This moisturizer has a subtle, pretty radiance to it that doesn’t come off as glittery at all. This moisture balm felt really nice on my skin and I loved the naturally dewy finish it left on my skin.

Amika: Soulfood Nourishing Mask, .7 fl oz – Estimated Value $4.20 (buy a full-size tube for $12)

I feel like hair masks are something I should get more into. I love good hair products that make my hair smell great. This product smells great, but I honestly wouldn’t say it’s any more amazing as a mask than as a general conditioner. In fact, it’s “How to Use” tab on Sephora’s website says you can use it as a mask OR as a daily conditioner, which tells me that the formula may not be as concentrated or intensely treating as a mask should be. But, as a conditioner, this product worked well! Something to keep in mind.

Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Cream Cleanser, .68 fl oz – Estimated Value $3.49 (buy a full-size tube for $26)

I love this cleanser! It’s really great for my dry skin because it feels hydrating and it doesn’t dry my face out one bit! It feels luxurious and changes from a cream to a foam while washing.

Supergoop Defense Refresh Setting Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 50, .5 fl oz – Estimated Value $6 (buy a 1 oz. bottle for $12)

I love the summer season for subscription boxes because there’s so much SPF sent out! This is a sprayable sunscreen refresh with SPF 50, and I love how it smells. This is great for touch-up defense on the go or at the beach or pool. It applied well and didn’t mess up my makeup, either.

I have to say that I wouldn’t recommend relying on this for your only SPF when sprayed over makeup. Make sure you’re using a moisturizer or foundation with SPF underneath your cosmetics as well, or apply this to your face before applying your foundation as well as for touch-ups throughout the day.

Mia Mistress Hydrating Hair Balm, .5 fl oz – Estimated Value $4.41 (buy a full-size tube for $15)

I’ve never tried this product before getting in this month’s Play! by Sephora box, but I actually really like it! It smells really nice, and it’s free of sulfates, phthalates, and parabens. The formula has coconut oil, argan oil, and shea butter to make your hair soft, frizz-free, and shiny! I thought the results were great when I used it on my towel-dried hair before blow-drying, but you can use it on dry hair, too!

Verdict: This box has a value of about $40.66. I think that’s great for a $10 beauty box, especially since the box will always include high-end brands. I love trying new things from brands I love and I trust Sephora’s curation of new brands, as well.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive next month's samples, curated based on your Play! Profile. Get email alerts for monthly spoilers!

Value Breakdown: At $10 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Eyeliner: $2.71
  • Illuminating Balm: $2.84
  • Hair Mask: $1.03
  • Korres Cleanser: $0.86
  • Supergoop Spray: $1.48
  • Hair Balm: $1.08

Wow. What a disappointment. Going back to Ipsy. I didn’t get ANY make up, just tiny samples of shampoo, etc. Ugh.

My Bobbi Browm tube was not only empty BUT was damaged. I am hoping that they will send me another one. I really wanted to try this item. It is funny because I just cancel my subscription and this was my last box. I hope they will make this right.

I got the same box! This was my first month of Play and I love it so far. I LOVE the Korres face cleanser and I think I’m going to buy the full size of that, when I finish the sample (it’s lasted me well over a week already). I’m very picky about cleansers, but I love its scent and how moisturizing it is.

I love felt tip eyeliners and I’m excited about that.

The Bobbi Brown balm is fun, too–it’s so sparkly! I’m not going to buy a full size of that, but it was fun to try.

I’ve been subbing to Play for over a year and I still love it. I’m constantly introduced to new products & I think $10 is a fair price for the number of items. I also use my 50 point card often and I shop in the store which I think adds to the enjoyment.
I’ve never had a duplicate item- that would bug me! And my box (I got this one this month) does seem geared toward my age. I think I may have copied someone else’s profile when I started so I would get stuff I liked? Not sure if it worked.
I keep thinking I’ll get tired of this sub as I have with others- but it keeps working for me.

I have not been thrilled with my Sephora playboxes lately. I have been getting a lot of duplicate products. And I have a question, wasn’t there supposed to be a new fragrance sample in every box, because that was one of the reasons I subscribed to the Sephora box and I haven’t gotten any in quite awhile. Not what I signed up for!

I got this box version and it was my first. I was quite underwhelmed. I think I expected more variation. I liked the packaging and the insert, though.

I did appreciate the review you did, since it points out that these are rather high end items – thanks! I will enjoy trying the hair products, and the highlighter and setting spray went to my daughter. The other two are useless…

I’ll probably keep this sub for a few months at least and give it a fair shake. I’m Canadian and drive across the border each month to pick up sub boxes only available in the US… so they have to be good to justify making the trek!

Me too! I am Canadian and drive over to pick mine up from Detroit.

This was my box. Complete snooze. Time to cancel I’m thinking

This was my favorite bag from Sephora!!!!! I love the soft texture and design.
Great job Sephora.

i agree, i liked the bag, too! soft and pretty. mine also smelled really good, like the mistress hair balm. 🙂

This is my box too and I am happy with it. I like that it wasn’t make-up heavy.

Bag twins! This month wasn’t exciting but everything was useful, except the eyeliner. I have so many black ones from subs and I usually just end up using eyeshadow to line my eyes with because I am basic. Lol but I love getting hair and face stuff so I’m not mad. I do have to say, while the phrase on the bag isn’t my favorite, the bag color and material is definitely my favorite. I never use the white bags but this one I will definitely use to hold something!

I got this variation as well, pale redhead with straight hair.

I was meh about my products this month, but mostly I found the bag print so offensive that I already cancelled my Sephora Play after over a year.

I’m native American and honestly, this is my favorite saying on a sephora bag ever. I’m trying to figure out what to use it for, since I usually throw my other ones away because I don’t know what to do with them. (I’ve read some people say homeless shelters, but there isn’t any even close to me so that don’t work) but I think people are way to sensitive over everything it seems these days, nd it’s much ado about nothing.

I didn’t find the bag message offensive, just dopey/stupid/ridiculous – plus it doesn’t make any sense. Beauty is an animal ~ huh? Most of the messages on the Sephora Play! bags are just tacky, along with the artwork, but this bag itself – the fabric itself – I find gorgeous! I will be cutting it up to use for a craft project – minus the part with the puzzling sentiment. I’ve been a subscriber to this bag for over two years, and it has become SO boring that I canceled my sub to it after this bag. So sick of red lipstains, Sephora-branded usually, mascara and black eyeliners. I seemed to get them all here in the last couple of months, repeatedly.

This box was absolutely awful and caused me to cancel. The Bobbi brown balm sample was so tiny I almost threw it away. I have always been a proponent of the play! boxes but thinking the lifestyle boxes are a better value.

Reply ButtonReply

Misti

That was what caused me to quit Play also Bobbi brown mini sample not really even a use out of it and this box got 1 item less than most of the other boxes .
always black eye liners too. why not a blue.aqua.green ? 2 black eyeliners and only 3 months of subbing.
plus never got the box til the 3rd week of the month is a long wait for a teen.

Reply ButtonReply

Jacki

It’s not a bad box, but it was far from being the best match for my profile.

Reply ButtonReply

Misti

I do not believe they match profiles at all what Play box this month would be suitable for a 17yr old fair haired blue eyed blonde with perfect skin no issues. Not this 1 the ,she got this 1.
I believe Sephora goes by when you order and dates not profiles at all.

We are box twins. I love your reviews and often wait before trying the products.
I thought it was an interesting box of different products with little “make-up”.
Super pleased to get the Korres cleanser – new to me & I love it!
I usually don’t use conditioners with my hair (as they weigh it down) but this winter my hair has been super dry with static electricity so I’m pleased to get these products – just wish they were a couple months earlier.

I was going to ask where your signature product modeling pic is (I love that you do that) but then I realized there way only one makeup item in your box! Huh.

Meanwhile, the fact that I did not get this box variation is a tiny bit of evidence that they do take your profile into account, at least a little bit. With my skin and hair concerns, none of these products, except the eye liner, would have been a good match for me.
