Nostalgic Candy Club March 2018 Review

March's theme was all about the 50 nifty United States! Nostalgic Candy Club selected their favorite standout candies from select states across the U.S. An information insert was included in the box detailing the history of their chosen candies, along with vivid descriptions of their tastes and textures.

I love the friendly, conversational tone of their write-up! It feels more like a passionate pal gushing about their favorite subject than a history lesson, which is really pleasant to read.

Now, onto the goodies:

Twin Bing Cherry Chocolate Bar, 1.88 oz. – Buy a 2-count for $3.09

These taste a LOT more appetizing than they look, I promise. I had never heard of these before opening this month's box. This sweet treat was created in 1923 and originally came in a variety of fruit flavors. Cherry stood the test of time, however, so they kept it goin'.

The outside is a thick layer of chunky peanuts covered in chocolate (think Mr. Goodbar), and the inside is a robust, marshmallow-y cherry nougat. I'd never expect to combine chocolate, peanuts, and cherries in a bar, but when you think about it, they're kind of like the toppings on a classic fudge sundae! The tastes and textures really worked together, and the bright pink cherry filling was fun to eat.

Reeds Hard Candy Root Beer Rolls - Buy a 2-pack for $2.99

Reeds Hard Candy Butterscotch Rolls – Buy a 2-pack for $2.99

These 10000% reminded me of candy my Grandpa used to stow in the glove compartment of his old car, ready to be doled out to giddy grandchildren in the backseat! Both flavors—buttersctoch and root beer—were FANTASTIC.

The root beer truly tasted like a candy-version of a refreshing soda. The butterscotch wasn't too tangy which I loved. In fact, it almost tasted creamy, despite being a regular hard candy! Both flavors were spot-on, and the fact that each piece came individually wrapped was a cute retro touch.

Idaho Spud Candy Bar, 1.5 oz. – Buy a 2-pack for $3.45

*No potatoes were harmed in the making of this candy bar.* I knew I'd like this the moment I unwrapped it. Chocolate-and-coconut is one of my all-time FAVE COMBOS. (Shoutout to Almond Joys!)

This bar boasts an added element of luxury thanks to its bouncy, cocoa-flavored marshmallow filling. The outer coating was my favorite part, though—the coconut flakes had that classic grainy texture, and the chocolate was so smooooooth!

Goetze's Caramel Creams, 1.9 oz. – Buy a 20-count box for $24.98

I giggled when I pulled these out of the box because my mom had these on standby all the time growing up and I never knew they were considered retro! Maybe it's the nostalgia factor, but I'll always love Caramel Creams. (They're one of the only caramel candies I truly enjoy!)

The caramel is chewy, not sticky, which I'm a fan of, cause who wants to be pickin' candy off their teeth after enjoying it? And the inside cream filling, whatEVER it's made out of, is pure magic. These are endlessly poppable and a treat to eat.

Tootsie Midgie Fruit Rolls — Buy an 11.5 oz. variety pack for $6.29

A CLASSIC. Is it just me, or did most elementary school teachers have these on-hand to encourage and/or reward good behavior? These tootsies also had recurring appearances in all the "Guess How Many Pieces Are In This Jar!" games at school fairs and carnivals.

The cherry flavor: Wonderful. No complaints. Truly timeless.

The vanilla flavor: No thank you! It had a strange fruit flavor for the first millisecond, and then took on a bland, nondescript taste that was not for me.

Chick-O-Sticks, 0.7 oz. – Buy a 36-count box for $11.99

When I looked at the individual ingredients in these sticks (peanuts, salt, sugar, and coconut), it didn't sound half bad. But when I actually took a bite of it...I had to spit it out. Why the heck is it orange!?

I expected a cracker-like crunch, based off of the outer coating, but it's more of a hard candy "snap." The flavors themselves were strange, and I couldn't taste much coconut at all. It was altogether a very strange experience, in the end. Not for me!

eFruitti Gummi Cupcake Candy – Buy a 60-count box for $10.49

This was the cutest li'l baby cupcake! It had such a fun, bouncy texture, and the gummy aspect of it didn't stick to your teeth. It's substantial, too! The lemon gel garnish adds a lot of flavor to this adorable treat, and they're really just so pretty to look at. This was my favorite treat in the box!

Brach's Chewy Jelly Bean Nougats – Buy a 1-lb. bag for $7.34

So pretttyyyy! These reminded me of stained glass or even a little mosaic of my favorite rock candy that came on a stick growing up. This was another great gummy texture. It tasted almost like a Dum-Dum lollipop, minus the stick. I couldn't pin down many individual flavors, other than vanilla and vague fruity notes, but the overall experience was really nice.

Verdict: I felt like the cutest little old lady sampling each of these retro treats. I had never heard of a majority of them before subscribing to this box, so Nostalgic Candy Club definitely lives up to its mission of curating forgotten favorites! I'm not a huge gummy candy fan, but the fact that I enjoyed this box's gummy treats is a testament to its great selection. My favorite was the adorable lemon cupcake, with the Idaho Spud Bar coming in at a close second!

When it comes to the value factor, $19.99 seems too high, no matter how hard it may seem to locate these retro candies. I was able to find all of them sold in bulk, which drives their individual costs lower than this box makes 'em out to be!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Boxes are curated by Nostalgic Candy Club themselves, so your box will likely look different than mine. They only ship once a month, so place your order before the last day of the current month to receive the next box!

Value Breakdown: For $19.00, I received 5 larger candies and 7 small pieces, which averages out to about $1.66 per piece. That small number may seem like a steal, but when you factor in just how tiny the small candies were, it still seems a little steep. I could definitely see this box being priced around the $14-$15 range.

Those chocolate cherry things were called Cherry Mash, I think, when I was young. A loooong time ago.

The Cherry Mash is made by a company called Chase, the Bing is made by a company called Palmer. Very similar product though

Ragan

Cherry Mash was still around as of the 1990s.

Being that my family used to run a candy store that specialized in “retro” candy I was really excited for this review.

I’m SHOCKED (and no I’m not being dramatic) that the reviewer enjoyed the Idaho Spud since it’s the most god awful thing I’ve ever tasted (probably because it contains seaweed) and the Chick O Stick is a very yummy classic.

Oh well, different strokes for different folks. I’m glad to now know this box exists, I think I’ll gift it to myself. lol

Aw! Your family’s candy store sounds incredible! Haha, I was a little shocked I liked the Idaho Spud too. The nougat inside was certainly interesting—I did NOT know it contained seaweed! It’s a great little box. Free shipping definitely makes the high-ish cost worth it!

My store WAS incredible, lol. I would gladly do it again if I had the funds.

One of the ingredients on the Spud Bar, Agar Agar, is a seaweed derivative.

Chick-o-sticks are my FAVORITE! To me, they taste like Butterfingers without the chocolate. You can buy them in almost any decent-sized gas station, though, so it’s weird to see them in a retro box. 🙂

I’d never heard of them before this box! Haha, you can take mine! (Seeing how much you all are raving about Chick-o-Sticks makes me think I should give ’em another chance. 😄)

Yup, chick-o-sticks are fairly well known in the midwest, where I’m at. I’ve seen them on the west coast when visiting, too. Crunchy Butterfinger goodness!

I also love Chick-O-Sticks!

You’ve all convinced me! I need to try ’em again with the Butterfinger-angle in mind! (Haha, maybe that’ll take my focus off their bright orange color 😀)

Diana

I buy Chico sticks anywhere I can find them. I agree butterfinger without chocolate!

Pamela

We love the vanilla tootsie rolls! When you buy a bag of assorted flavors, there’s so fe vanilla we fight over them. I just found limited edition bags of just vanilla recently! lol

Bonnie

I love the vanilla too! Walgreens used to sell them at Halloween and Easter but they stopped. I found bags of them at my Dollar Tree though.

Haha! Well, Pamela, if we were to ever share a bag of tootsie rolls, I’d gladly give you alllll the vanilla ones! 😂
