Lillypost February 2018 Review
Lillypost includes a little letter from their team each month to address the box. This month they highlight how fun it is to watch your child discover new things (and books!) and they describe the toy that they included. I like that they really thought about how the toy could be used with any age- they suggest waiting to use it if your child is too young or just letting them feel and hold the egg for the tactile experience. I think it just shows how much thought they put into their boxes, which I really appreciate!
Hide ‘Em and Hatch ‘Em Super Grow Eggs- Buy 3 for $9.99 (found here for $8.95)
I couldn’t find just the single eggs online anywhere but was able to locate the sets a few places. It’s a perfect little spring bonus for the box and my kiddos were especially excited to get our egg out and start the hatching process. Please note: it takes ONE to TWO days to hatch! Luckily my daughter is actually pretty patient and the thrill of being able to run and check on the egg every 5 minutes is enough for her, but I didn’t realize it would take so long until after I already contributed to their excitement! (Note to self: read ALL directions, not just step 1!)
Now let’s check out the books we received this month:
Love Monster by Rachel Bright - Retail Value $7.99 (found here for $5.48)
This story was fitting for February as it is about a monster who is looking for love. Since he’s not a cute, cuddly, fluffy guy, he finds it hard to find someone to love him. The book details his journey to find love in various places until one day he finds it in an unexpected place.
The illustrations were very cute and detailed with lots for little ones to look at. The story itself was sweet, but also humorous and my little guy really seemed to enjoy it. My 3-year-old was also really interested in the illustrations that contained a lot of shadows and textures- very interesting to look at!
Clever Babies Love Art: Wild Animals by Lauren Farnsworth - Retail Value $8.95 (found here for $7.99)
This book was so simple - pictures of animals and their names underneath, but the artwork really elevated it and turned it into something special! My son loves animals and was so excited for this book when we opened it. He carried it around all morning just so he could keep looking at it. I liked that they were different animals than we usually see in books such as koalas and kangaroos.
I love the contrast of the black and white and the little tiny bits of color on each page are great for teaching colors. There are also so many details in each of the designs, it will also be great for teaching about patterns and textures. (My former art teacher brain is already spinning at the possibilities of art projects from this one little book!) Overall, the board books were a win!
Superhero Instruction Manual by Kristy Dempsey - Retail Value $16.99 (found here for $11.89)
What a fun book! The bright, vibrant colors and comic book style of the pages are great, plus what kid doesn’t love the idea of being a superhero? This book provides a step by step guide that is pretty detailed- tips on picking your Superhero name, choosing a sidekick and of course deciding on a superpower!
This book was also a fun read for parents with little side notes that only older kids or parents would really appreciate (i.e. the page in the picture above references Spider Man). I love that this book was so interactive and that it initiated some great conversation between my daughter and I as we discussed what she would choose for each step.
A Perfect Mess by Steve Breen - Retail Value $16.99 (found here for $13.89)
This was a cute story about a rhino who is very messy and vows to make it one whole day without getting himself dirty. He tries very hard to avoid situations at school that might make a mess, but instead, he ends up getting everyone and everything around him messy.
The adorable illustrations on each page are what really told the story, often showing the disastrous consequences of his actions, instead of explaining them all through the text. I thought these were cute and funny and once I pointed out what was happening, my daughter enjoyed the story a lot too.
Verdict: Once again, I was really impressed with our Lillypost box! My kids were so excited to open their beautifully wrapped books again and were happy with what they received. It was especially exciting to find a little bonus gift inside and this month we received our fox stickers too which added to the excitement!
The total retail value of the books came to $50.92 (less with sale prices), which is awesome for a $26 box! That doesn’t even include the bonus little egg we received this month! My kids are 19 months and 3 and the books were very age-appropriate, but also books that appeal to parents, which is always nice! This is the second month in a row that one of our picture books has been somewhat interactive and that’s something I have been enjoying. I’m looking forward to seeing what we get in our Lillypost box next month!
