Ecocentric Mom Unboxing & Review
This month is the first under the new Ecocentric Mom format, which customizes some of the products for you based on your due date or child's birthday. I've always enjoyed this box, so I was curious to see what types of changes we'd see with this shift.
It looks like Ecocentric Mom has a new way of doing their info cards too! This petite envelope was stuffed full of tiny business card sized cards for each product we received. I thought it would be more fun to reveal these with each product to help explain why each one was picked, so let's jump right into the items.
Stinkbug Naturals Organic Deodorant Stick, 0.5 oz Travel Size – Retail Value $3.49
Lavender is actually my fave natural deodorant scent, and I don't have a travel size, so this item will definitely come in handy for me!
Like many natural deodorants, this is formulated without aluminum and propylene glycol.
In our stack of cards, I found this product under "Something for Mama."
It's not exactly the most exciting product in the world, but it is useful and I appreciate that it's aluminum-free (my preference).
With the first ingredient being coconut oil, I found this stick applied dramatically better than my usual Schmidt's stick; it glided right on whereas my Schmidt's feels a bit rough, even after warming it against my skin for a few seconds. I like the natural fragrance, too. Since it's still cold here and I'm a relatively cold-bodied person, I haven't really tested it to its limit, but so far I like this formula a lot.
Zamn Good Zesty Lemon Protein Bar by Tru Women – Listed Value $2.79 (Available in a case of 12 for $33.48)
If you've read my other reviews, you know I usually go straight for the snacks. This box is no exception!
I was happy to see they still included something edible under the new format. Plus this month it's definitely for me; in the past, some of the included snacks were definitely intended for my toddler (although we usually ended up sharing).
I'm not big on protein bars personally, but they are a great way to fill up quickly if you're on the go and need to skip a meal.
I appreciated that the ingredients were really simple and I could easily pronounce everything. Compared to a few other bars I've tried in fitness boxes, this is definitely refreshing!
As for the real test: how did it taste?
I was pleasantly surprised! It is still a protein bar and has some of that classic sort of dry chalkiness that I feel like comes with the territory, but wow: the lemon flavor was sooooo good. This is definitely the best tasting protein bar I've ever had; I would happily eat this again.
Soapberry Suds, 2 load laundry soap sample – Listed Value $2
Honestly: I'm over getting laundry soap samples in subscription boxes. I'm not necessarily inundated with them, but my husband actually does most of our laundry so it's just not something I think much about or am interested in trying new brands for needs.
This item is definitely practical, though, and has me thinking about the environmental impact of our current laundry products.
At first, I thought "100% Organic Soapberries" was kind of a joke, but no: they are a real thing! We haven't tried this just yet but I'm sure I will this weekend, and I'm very curious to see how the cleaning power compares.
Hyland's 4Kids Oral Pain Relief Nighttime Homeopathic Tablets – Retail Value $9.99
(This was the only item that didn't have a corresponding card.)
I've never used oral pain relief products with my son for a few reasons. First of all, he handled teething pain like a champ so it was very rare that he needed excessive soothing while teething. Second, I'd read mixed reviews of a different product at some point (Teething Tablets, which are now discontinued after an FDA request). This product seems to share many of the same active ingredients but is aimed at older children instead of babies, so maybe the age range was part of the FDA request? I'm not entirely sure but you can read more details about the recall here.
CORRECTION: We've learned that the formulation has been updated. This new product (and a similar Hyland's product for children under 2) is formulated without belladonna, which was included in the previously recalled product. Here's some info from their FAQ:

We are excited to have a product that will treat additional symptoms beyond those associated with teething.
Unfortunately, some consumers are confusing this product with the previous Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablets. Hyland’s team understands any possible concerns; however, they stand by the safety of those medicines based on the Company’s own and FDA’s testing of the medicines. Despite the trust in their medicine’s safety, Hyland’s clearly heard the FDA’s concerns regarding use of the active ingredient Belladonna and decided not to include this homeopathic active ingredient in its new Hyland’s Baby Oral Pain Relief Tablets.
They are a pretty well-known brand and I know lots of parents like their products. I've personally had success with just soothing teething pain with cold teething toys, etc, but this seems like a good item to have on hand.

Coconut Lime Beeswax Hand Cream, 3 oz – Retail Value $24
Ah! Another item for mom that is a little more exciting than deodorant! 😉
I'm a big fan of both lanolin and cocoa butter, and my hands are particularly dry this week, so this was definitely a win for me.
Generally, I stay away from fragrance because I have sensitive skin (and a sensitive nose, or at least a very picky one). I'm pleased to report that I really enjoyed this scent! It wasn't too strong for my taste, and was neither specifically "coconut" or "lime"– it was more of a pleasant blend, and it felt like there were some other fragrances in there too.
As far as the moisturizing power itself, this felt great going on and wasn't oily.
Eco Dough by Eco Kids – Retail Value $9.99
I can't believe my son is almost 3 and we've never played with clay together! I'm so glad this came in this box.
Each box from Ecocentric Mom should contain an item just for your child, tailored to their age.
This play dough is made from all natural ingredients and FDA approved soy and inorganic pigments.
Upon opening the jars, you immediately notice the essential oil fragrance. It looks like it's rosemary from the info card, but I couldn't put my finger on it exactly at the time. Knowing that my son has inherited my sensitive skin, we proceeded with caution, since he hasn't been exposed to a ton of essential oils (and we recently had a scary bout of hives caused by essential oils in a bubble bath).
I pulled out a baking sheet and a few cookie cutters, and we had a blast!
I think we spent a solid hour or more rolling out the dough, cutting out shapes, and stacking them into towers. I molded some little frogs for him and we pretended the circles were lily pads, too. His imagination is really taking off so I am loving these types of creative activities lately.
As far as the dough itself: it did leave a bit of a blue and green residue on our hands, but it cleaned off pretty easily. Luckily we had our clay session right before bath time. We also both suffered a bit of eye irritation while we were playing, probably from absent-mindedly wiping near our eyes after touching the clay. It was no big deal and only lasted a few minutes, but I do caution parents of kids with sensitive skin to always be aware of the types of things they are touching!
Verdict
My February Ecocentric Mom Box had an overall value of $52.26. It's not a bad value (almost $20 over the price of the box!), but I've really come to expect more from this brand as they sometimes have boxes that are worth $70 or more. I was originally disappointed in the Hyland's product because of last year's recall, but I'm much happier with it now that I've learned this is a new product that addresses all of those concerns. All of the other items are a big hit and I'm still happy with the overall value. I hope to see the new format continue to improve!
