Degustabox March 2018 Review

info sheet for march 2018 degusta box

Degustabox always has a really nice info sheet that goes over each item included in the box with their retail values.

The content on the back changes from month to month, this time it showcases breakfast items.

homebrew quick pickle mix packets back of homebrew quick pickle mix packets

HomeBrew Quick Pickle Mix x 3- Total Listed Retail Value $4.50 ($1.50 each)

The first series of items are unique to me. They've sent three packets of different pickling mixes that include Spicy Pineapple, Snappy Apple, and Pickled Red Onion. My mom used to do a lot of pickling when I was growing up, but I've never done any on my own. I love dill pickles so I wish one of these was a more classic flavor, but these should be pretty fun to try. Each packet suggests a different fruit or veggie to use and only requires you to cut it up, mix the packet with water, sugar, and vinegar on the stove, and then seal in a jar with the veggie in the refrigerator for 24 hours.

Julians Recipe belgian pastry waffles info for Julians Recipe belgian pastry waffles

Julian's Recipe Belgian Pastry Waffles, x2 - Listed Value $4.99 for a box of 4

These waffles look like they are normally found in the freezer section of the grocery store, but can be eaten at room temp right out of the package, as they've come here. I'd prefer to heat mine up, so I did so in the toaster oven for a few minutes. As they mention on the package, there's no need for syrup with these because they are already sweet! For an added experience, you can slather it in Nutella, whipped cream, or fruit!

7days peanut butter cream and chocolate croissant 7days peanut butter cream and chocolate croissant on plate 7days peanut butter cream and chocolate croissant in half on plate

7Days Soft Croissant in Peanut Butter Creme and Chocolate - Listed Retail Value $1.49 (Buy a pack of 6 for $12.00)

As far as packaged croissants go, this one is pretty darn good. The bread is really soft and has stayed moist. It's filled with creamy peanut butter and chocolate (my favorite croissant filling) and almost tastes like a PB+J sandwich with chocolate instead of jelly. This is a great little on the go snack.

oreo mint chocolate candy bar oreo mint chocolate candy bar on plate

OREO Chocolate Candy Bar in Mint, 2.88 oz - Retail Value $0.99

OREO has been coming out with all sorts of wild products lately. This one uses the popular European chocolate brand Milka chocolate which is insanely creamy and smooth, along with a mint and cookie filling. I love mint with chocolate and these remind me Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies, so I am majorly on board.

Post Great Grains coconut almond crunch back of Post Great Grains coconut almond crunch

Post Great Grains Cereal in Coconut Almond Crunch - Retail Value $3.28

I don't buy or eat a lot of cereal, but if I get the hankering, this would be exactly what I'd go for. The coconut almond combination is my favorite for granola to put in my yogurt or a cereal like this. This has a subtle sweetness to it that makes it easy to eat but feels healthy. The flakes are accompanied by nice big slivers of coconut and almonds.

Elmhurst milked brown rice back of Elmhurst milked brown rice

Elmhurst Milked Brown Rice, 32 oz. - Retail Value $5.99

I've never seen brown rice milk before, so this is new for me! Knowing a lot of vegans, I've tried a myriad of plant-based milk, and I have to say that this one is pretty impressive. Even though I'm a whole (cows) milk kinda gal, I can appreciate the nutty flavor of this that does indeed taste a lot like brown rice (which is my preferred rice). I wouldn't call it "creamy" like advertised since it is rather thin, but it has a great flavor.

Here, I tried it with the cereal from above. Good stuff!

Loacker Espresso Quadratini back of Loacker Espresso Quadratini Loacker Espresso Quadratini on plate

Loacker Quadratini in Espresso, 7.76 oz. - Retail Value $4.69

Ah, my beloved Loacker wafers! These are no stranger to Degustabox, but this is the first time I've received the espresso flavor. The package boasts that they are "#1 in Italy" and I understand why. They're so crispy and light but filled with creamy espresso flavor filling that goes perfectly with coffee. These are really easy to overdo it with.

BluePrint Organic Energy Tea in guaya-fiyah description of BluePrint Organic Energy Tea in guaya-fiyah on bottle

BluePrint Organic Energy Tea in Guaya-Fiyah, 14 oz. - Listed Retail Value $2.49 (Buy a case of 12 for $34.50)

I had to look up what "Guayusa" is because I was not familiar. It's apparently in the holly family and is prepared by drying like tea. It naturally is packed with caffeine, so this energy tea is all organic and made without additional boosters. It has maple syrup to sweeten, lemon juice, Guayusa extract and essence, turmeric extract, and cayenne pepper extract, so it is a lot like a juice cleanse product. The taste is a little slow to get used to, but not too bad. I'd definitely prefer drinking this to a chemical-packed energy drink.

Verdict: This month's Degustabox was great! I love breakfast, so I enjoyed all of the morning-friendly items included and I was exposed to a lot of new products as well. More heavy on the "snack" side than the "pantry-staple" side this month, but I still enjoy the mix from delivery to delivery. The top items for me were probably the cereal and espresso wafers, but that Oreo candy bar was also bangin'!

Yeah, this box didn’t do it for me. I liked the waffles, but it made me a little anxious, since the box said frozen, and these were not, but man, they were tasty. I did not like getting the pickling spices, (won’t use), gave the cereal away, gave the rice milk away, even though I did take a little taste and it wasn’t too bad. I loved the candy bar, tasted like girl scout cookies, and wasn’t too thrilled about the croissant. I guess if it expires tomorrow I better get on it. Last month my boboli pizza crusts and sauce were only a few days away from expiration. I hurried and used the crusts, and froze the sauce I didn’t use. I am the only person I know who does not like the Loakker wafer cookies. I didn’t care for espresso flavor and last time I got strawberry yougurt flavor. Not for me! Here’s to hoping next month gets better, or it will be my last.

This one was a bust for me. I gave away the pickling spices and riced milk right away, and poured the drink down the sink. It looked like mud! The rest of the stuff was okay, and the cereal will definitely get eaten, but I was not a fan of this box overall.

It tasted like mud too! Huge bummer because I do like tea. Two other tea drinkers in my office tried it as well and none of us could choke it down.

I might be the minority here, but I thought the milked brown rice was a really good discovery. The taste was good, and it has 20 whole grains in a serving. I don’t normally eat cereal for breakfast but I thought that cereal was so good.

Costco carries the waffles beside the deli cookies and treats so they’re definitely shelf stable and I’ve purchased them a lot from there.
I’ve never received any expired items from Degustabox but now I think exp dates are only a freshness indicator and not really a safety indicator.

Generally I agree with you, but I think it’s reasonable to expect a sub box to send out only the freshest products. If Degustabox becomes nothing more than a quick way to dispose of food that doesn’t sell, I will cancel for certain.

I love Degustabox. In fact, I just wrote a review for them the other day as well! I agree with the comments here that this also wasn’t my favorite month. I enjoyed that they went for a theme though, and breakfast the best meal of the day. Maybe a brunch box would be more fun and inclusive in the future??

I agree that this box felt VERY light, the value should be higher on a box where you’re taking a risk in just getting random items.

I have eaten the cookies already. Yummy. I got a different tea and haven’t tried yet because it is too cold outside. I love this sub box. So much fun.

This box feels very light, as if it’s missing something. I’m calculating a total value of about $26, which is low for Degusta. And so many of these items are single-serving. And while the breakfast theme is clear, this is basically all sweets, with nothing salty or savory. Combined with the candy spoilers released today for April’s box, I’m feeling a little sick to my stomach just thinking about all this sugar.
Also worth noting – the best by date on the croissant is 3/22/18, only two days from today. I found that a little strange.

I got that same croissant in another sub box about a year ago and it was also near the expiration date. In fact, I think I got that box ON the expiration date. So I just assume they don’t have a long shelf life (like the Boboli they’ve sent a few times now that I always end up throwing in the freezer to extend it a bit). But, yes, then it probably isn’t a good choice for a sub box….and it’s not my favorite snack anyways (so I might be biased). LOL.

Lauren

I agree on all of these points and would add that almost all the food is running short on shelf life (nearly all expired, at least what I received).

Also, they did not indicate the expiration date on the waffles, which for all we know may already be expired. And seriously … half a box of waffles? Really? I cancelled.

TK

I’ve had that problem too…food is very close to expiration date. The Boboli crusts we received were just days away from being expired. Some of the boxed cookie mixes have been a couple weeks from expiring. I would think the companies promoting their products would not want potential customers sampling beyond the freshness date.
