BarkBox is the most popular dog subscription box. They now offer a Super Chewer Box version for dogs who are destructive. If you have read any of my dog subscription reviews, you will know that my Rottweiler, Nyx, is an expert at finding the weak points in toys and tearing them apart, so this seemed perfect for her. (For reference, Nyx weighs about 87 pounds right now.)

Super Chewer March 2018 “Academy of Fine Arfs” Review

BarkBox custom produces most of their treats and toys, so everything always nicely revolves around a theme:

The information card varies month-to-month in terms of style but I definitely appreciate the creativity that goes into it.

Etta Says Crunchy 7” Buffalo Recipe Chew

Etta Says Crunchy 7” Buffalo Recipe Chew – Retail Value $3

You’ll get usually a couple of toys, a couple of bags of treats, and a couple of chews like this in the Barkbox Super Chewer box. This one is made from buffalo which, as a gamier and non-mass-produced meat, may work better for dogs with sensitive stomachs than commercial beef products. This is made in the USA and actually has a crunchy texture.

Chew n’ Chisel Marble – Estimated Value $14

This item was not in the Barkbox shop (and of course it is custom made for Barkbox) so I estimated the value from a similar toy. In this case, the “stone” part is a softer rubber that, when removed (through chewing), reveals a carving. However, Nyx totally didn’t understand that she was *supposed* to chew on the rubber part, instead preferring to gnaw on the column’s end…oh well. She did have fun with this.

Happie Howie’s 11” Beef Woof Stix

Happie Howie’s 11” Beef Woof Stix – Retail Value $7

There are actually two sticks in here, not just one. These are actually made with ground beef, too, instead of what traditional bully sticks are made of…These are free of wheat, corn, and soy, and are free of artificial dyes or preservatives. They are size appropriate for a large dog but would work for a smaller dog as well.

The Cantankerous Paint Can

The Cantankerous Paint Can – Estimated Value $14

This is another one not available in the Barkbox shop, so I’ve again estimated the value from a similar toy. The paint can part has an opening where you can put a treat (there is only one opening, but some air flow happens where the rope goes into the purple part, so there shouldn’t be any suction problems). Nyx preferred to chew on the rope, naturally. Well, whatever works.

Hare of the Dog Rabbit Slider (4 oz)

Hare of the Dog Rabbit Slider (4 oz) – Retail Value $10

I’m always excited to get rabbit-based treats in dog boxes since Nyx can have rabbit. These are grain free and made in the USA and Nyx thinks they are awesome (there is a little dehydrated milk in them, but she’s tolerated it well). You can see Nyx eagerly anticipating one of these in a photo below.

Blissful Biscuit Painter’s Pallet (4.5 oz)

Blissful Biscuit Painter’s Pallet (4.5 oz) – Retail Value $8

I had a hard time typing the name of this treat because, um, it’s the wrong “palette.” Anyway, these don’t actually have colored bits but instead are made with pretty standard dog treat ingredients (pork, oat flour, etc.). The product information says these are made with bacon and bison, but there is no bison in the ingredients list…Anyway, these are made in the USA and are free of artificial dyes and preservatives.

Here are some photos of Nyx with the column toy. She didn’t spend much time chewing on the rubber part so I don’t have any idea what is underneath it yet. Hopefully, we will find out one day. Also, she was really excited to try one of the rabbit sliders and she did fine with it, which means she can have treats with some dairy content in the future!

Verdict: I calculated a value of $56 for this month’s BarkBox Super Chewer Box. That is over the cost of the subscription on a month-to-month basis by quite a lot and is close to the average for this subscription. I found there to be a pretty good mix of treats, toys, and chews (this box is usually pretty consistent in that regard). Nyx was able to have some of the treats and it made her day, and she particularly liked the column/marble toy, even if she wasn’t chewing on it as intended.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would be April's.

Value Breakdown: At $39 for the box, you’d be paying approximately the following per item:

  • Buffalo stick $2.09
  • Column/marble toy $9.75
  • Beef sticks $4.88
  • Paint can toy $9.75
  • Rabbit sliders $6.96
  • “Pallet” treats $5.57

I wish my dogs would be able to play with toys rather than immediately trying to swallow them whole.
