This post compares two current lip kits currently available for purchase: The Birchbox 2018 Lip Service Kit and the Sephora Favorites Give Me Some New Lip Kit. Both boxes contain a variety of deluxe and full-sized products. Since both boxes cost $28, it seems fair to stack them up against each other.

Make sure to check out our Birchbox reviews and Play! by Sephora reviews, too!

My Subscription Addiction paid for both boxes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Birchbox 2018 Lip Service Kit (check out the full review here)

Number of items: 9

Full-sized items: 4

Deluxe sized items: 5

Brands Featured: LOC, Sara Happ, Stila, Kevyn Aucoin, MAC, Milk, Smith & Cult, Smashbox

Total Value: $115.72

Favorite item in the box: Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day® Liquid Lipstick in Perla

This kit exposed me to a lot of brands I have not tried before, along with some brands that are staples to beauty subscription boxes. While I have tried the Stila liquid Lipstick before, this was the first time I tried out the shade Perla, and I love how it looks like a dusty mauve on my fair skin. I have a ton of liquid lipsticks, but none quite like this one. Plus, it outlasts eating fondue on girls night out!

Sephora Favorites Give Me Some New Lip Kit (check out the full review here)

Number of items: 5

Full-sized items: 2

Deluxe sized items:  3

Brands Featured: Marc Jacobs, Smashbox, Huda Beauty, Trestique, Fenty Beauty

Total Value: $80.00

Favorite item in the box: Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon in Night Mauves

This is the perfect mauve-nude lip shade for me to wear everywhere (so far I’ve worn it to law school, work, and brunch). It has the easy application of a lip crayon combined with the staying power of a liquid lipstick. I thought that claim was a gimmick before I tried it, but I have seen the proof in not needing to reapply throughout the day. Plus, this is so incredibly comfortable to wear— easily the most comfortable lip color I have that lasts as long as this does. I need this lip crayon in more shades #hidemywallet.

Verdict: I really struggled over which box to pick. The Birchbox kit has four more products and an extra $30 in value, but the Sephora kit has brand new products (some of which haven't even been released yet). In the end, I pick the Sephora Favorites Give Me Some New Lip Kit because all of the products are ones I have not tried before, which added personal value for me.

That being said, your lip needs and opinions may be completely different from mine, so here are my general suggestions on which box to pick:

Birchbox: Pick this kit if you want to expand your lip horizons, and want to try a variety of different products. This kit includes liquid lipsticks, lip glosses, and tools like a sharpener and a lip scrub to really cover all of your bases, and it includes products from a variety of price points. Something in this kit should be able to appeal to everyone.

Sephora: Pick this kit if you are a makeup addict who loves high-end brands and trying more adventurous shades. The hot pink of the Fenty lipstick, the glitter in the Huda beauty lip strobe, and the metallic gold finish of the Smashbox will help you try out new lip looks. Want to try out the metallic lip trend without fully committing? Try dabbing the lip color in the center of your lips with your finger ( I did that this morning on top of the Marc Jacobs lip crayon, and I am loving the subtle metallic shine).

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

Fun post! I love the LOC sharpener.

I’d pick the second box as I want to try the Marc Jacobs product. In not a fan so much of that color but I’m eyeing a few of the other shades and would like to try out the formula first.
