BBQ Box January 2018 Review

BBQ Box January 2018 card front

The card that’s included boasts a recipe from Mr. Mixon himself, offering insight on how to use all of the delicious goodies that are in the box!

BBQ Box January 2018 card back

This month’s recipe card was a total surprise and a total delight - chili! One of my very favorite foods from childhood is my mom’s chili. I beg her to make it all winter long, and to make sure she has a frozen batch of it for me every time I visit! There’s something so comforting about it, and it can actually be pretty healthy, which is a nice option for when other winter foods are often super-rich and heavy. This recipe from Myron looks great; he uses green bell pepper, which I always think gives chili great flavor. This looks like it’s been designed to really let the included seasoning of the month shine. Let’s dig in!

BBQ Box January 2018 chIli seasoning bottle BBQ Box January 2018 Chili seasoning plate

Suckle Busters Texas Chili Seasoning, 3.5 oz - Retail Value $5.99

Smoky, full-flavored, and not too salty - this seasoning is delicious! Myron’s directions advise that this is supposed to be added to the ground beef when it’s cooking; I think this would also be great in a turkey chili recipe, or even rubbed on chicken thighs before grilling.

BBQ Box January 2017 sauce bottle

Suckle Busters Chipotle Pepper Sauce, 5 oz - Retail Value $5.99

I was super-glad this was the sauce included in this box because I love sweet chipotle peppers! Now, it’s not exactly pretty; in fact, I didn’t want to show this out on a plate because it didn’t look great. Not to fret, though - the flavor was where it needed to be! This sweet sauce that hits a medium on the spicy index actually won a National BBQ Association Award, and I can see why. It’s really flavorful, and just about as spicy as I like, but I bet it’s good on everything. I would definitely sprinkle this atop chili, but I think it would also be great in cheesy chicken tortilla soup or atop shrimp skewers.

BBQ Box January 2018 Cheese pkg BBQ Box January 2018 Cheese plate

Northwoods Cheese Company Smoked Gouda, 6 oz - Retail Value $5.18

So...I love cheese, and admittedly, I tend to love most cheeses indiscriminately. Even though my love is wide for all things fromage, I’d like to think I still can tell good cheese from not-so-good cheese. This is really, really good cheese. It has a smoky flavor without being overbearing, but the quality of the dairy itself really comes through. It’s crazy-creamy; making for an absolutely genius snack. I swear I saved enough for on top of my chili, but also added this to some sundried tomato pasta and it melted so beautifully, practically creating a cheese sauce from thin air.

BBQ Box January 2018 Jerky pkg BBQ Box January 2018 Jerky plate

Duke’s Chipotle BBQ Beef Brisket Strips, 2.5 oz - Retail Value $6.89

Possibly the best part of the entire box is anticipating what kind of jerky will be included for snacking! I’ve mentioned that my husband is a big beef jerky fan, and he lives for the moment when I give him the bag and let him go to town. I was anxious to try this, too! Like I said, I really love chipotles, and this beef jerky was definitely on the spicier side, but it was balanced with a little bit of sweetness, and the texture was firm, which held up to everything it had going on.

Verdict: I looooved this month’s box! All of these items are so useful, and I really like having them on-hand in my pantry so that I can make chili whenever I want. I love to cook, but I’m usually more on the conservative side with spice, so these boxes give me an excuse to escape my comfort zone and play with new flavors and types of food that I don’t typically cook. I loved this month’s journey with chipotle flavors, and can’t wait to see what’s in next month’s box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? If you sign up today, you get the welcome box as your first. BBQ Box has so many new sign-ups per month they’ve designated a welcome box as the first box to make sure they have enough in stock for all subscribers. Then, the following month, you receive your first regular BBQ Box.

From BBQ Box:

Due to a large, unknown number of monthly sign-ups we have to have 1 box as a welcome kit (version 1.0 of each box) ready by the shipping date so we have enough in stock for all of our new customers. For that reason we order thousands of items for the three Welcome Boxes, ready to go since the shipping window (25th-30th) is so small after the cutoff time (the 24th), so we can get you your box asap.

Value Breakdown: Based on my calculations, the value of this box is $24.05, just a bit lower than the box cost of $31.97 ($24.99 a month + $6.98 for PGH shipping). However, this box was seriously worth it for the cheese alone, and I really do think that having a barbecue expert curate these items and offer his know-how on all things barbecue offers extra value to this subscription.
