ThredUP Box January 2018 Majestic Filatures 3/4 Sleeve Detail

ThredUP Box January 2018 Majestic Filatures 3/4 Sleeve

Women's Majestic Filatures 3/4 Sleeve, Size L - Cost to Keep $25.99

This is a great basic top that can be paired on its own or layered with sweaters or cardigans. The fabric was very clingy so I don't know if I would want to wear it on its own. I do love the color and the overall comfort, but it really is more of an undershirt for me. You will notice me wearing it in other photos under a few sweaters! Nothing too fancy here, just a great layering piece.

ThredUP Box January 2018 Anthropologie Long Sleeve Henley ThredUP Box January 2018 Anthropologie Long Sleeve Henley Detail

Women's Anthropologie Love Sleeve Henley, Size Large - Cost to Keep $26.99

I love the color of this henley, but I just can't get over the fit. The tab sleeves are just not me at all, and the deep v henley cut was a bit too low for my liking. I do love the ruffles but mixed with how low cut it fell on me I thought was too much. The fabric is very soft and comfortable, a great evening or weekend shirt. I thought this was a cute top, just not a great fit for me.

ThredUP Box January 2018 Olivia M. Cardigan ThredUP Box January 2018 Olivia M. Cardigan Detail ThredUP Box January 2018 Olivia M. Cardigan Fringe

Women's Olivia M. Cardigan, Size Large - Cost to Keep $28.99

I love this cardigan, I have a few similar styles but nothing this long. I loved the way it fit, the fringe at the bottom, and the colors. It felt so warm and cozy, perfect for the cold winter months. I could see myself wearing this with a turtleneck and jeans or a tee and leggings. A great fit and exactly my style!

ThredUP Box January 2018 Lauren By Ralph Lauren Cardigan ThredUP Box January 2018 Lauren By Ralph Lauren Cardigan Open ThredUP Box January 2018 Lauren By Ralph Lauren Cardigan Detail

Women's Lauren By Ralph Lauren Cardigan, Size Large - Cost to Keep $21.99

I was a bit confused by this piece because it felt more like a jacket to me but is listed as a cardigan. Maybe the zipper threw me off? I love Ralph Lauren, but this piece feels a bit outdated. I thought the fit was bulky on me, nothing to create any shape or hug my curves. The jacket is too thin to be a coat unless you pair it with a blanket scarf, yet it was a bit heavy for an everyday cardigan. This just wasn't a great style for me and nothing that I could see myself working into my wardrobe.

ThredUP Box January 2018 Garnet Hill Pullover Sweater ThredUP Box January 2018 Garnet Hill Pullover Sweater Detail

Women's Garnet Hill Pullover Sweater, Size Large - Cost to Keep $23.99

I really love this oatmeal color, it is great for the winter with my darker hair and skin tone. The sweater is light enough to layer a tank or long sleeve tee under yet it is still warm and cozy. The one thing I didn't love about this is that the top felt a bit stretched out and worn, so I would probably use this as more of a casual weekend look.

ThredUP Box January 2018 Joie Wool Pullover Sweater ThredUP Box January 2018 Joie Wool Pullover Sweater Detail ThredUP Box January 2018 Joie Wool Pullover Sweater Hole

Women's Joie Wool Pullover Sweater, Size Large - Cost to Keep $60.99

This sweater was not for me. The fit was off that seemed slightly stretched and there was a small hole near the collar. The color is a bit drab and the fabric was soft but slightly itchy. I wear a lot of sweaters and am always looking to add more to my wardrobe but I didn't fall in love with this style.

ThredUP Box January 2018 Josephine Chaus Cardigan ThredUP Box January 2018 Josephine Chaus Cardigan Detail

Women's Josephine Chaus Cardigan, Size Large - Cost to Keep $17.99

This cardigan looked like something my Mom wore in the late 90s. Not a bad thing, I just felt as though I needed to pair this with a skort. The fabric is spandex so it is extra stretchy and extremely comfortable. I could see myself pairing this with a dress or a vintage tee and jeans. I do love more minimalistic pieces so this is a perfect style match for me!

ThredUP Box January 2018 C Abi Long Sleeve Top ThredUP Box January 2018 C Abi Long Sleeve Top Detail

Women's Chaser Long Sleeve Top, Size Large - Cost to Keep $15.99

I really wanted to love this top, but I thought it was just too tight and unflattering on my frame. I love the color and the beautiful pattern that reminds me of lace. This is the type of top I would live in, but I felt very uncomfortable in the overall fit of this one. I might keep this though and share with a friend because I love it so much, I want someone to enjoy it!

ThredUP Box January 2018 Chaser Long Sleeve Top ThredUP Box January 2018 Chaser Long Sleeve Top Back ThredUP Box January 2018 Chaser Long Sleeve Top Detail

Women's C Abi Long Sleeve Top, Size Large - Cost to Keep $17.99

The tag lists this as a large, but the fit was so off I have a hard time understanding how it possibly can be the correct size. The sides were uneven as if the hem had been sewn differently and the sleeves cut me off at a weird spot. Is it a long sleeve or 3/4 length? The cutout back might be what made the sides lay differently. The fabric was itchy and felt like it was pulling from being dried too much. This is the one piece that I think is not worth the price.

ThredUP Box January 2018 New York & Company Long Sleeve ThredUP Box January 2018 New York & Company Long Sleeve Detail

Women's New York & Company Long Sleeve Top, Size Large - Cost to Keep $16.99

I really love this top! I didn't think I would, but I thought the cut was super flattering. I might be a bit basic, but I love a simple black top, I just can't help it! The fabric is super silky and soft, it just moved with me. If I could change anything, I would let the waist out a bit instead of being so clingy. All in all, this is a great top that I know I will get a lot of wears out of, dressed up or casual!

ThredUP Box January 2018 Madewell Long Sleeve Blouse ThredUP Box January 2018 Madewell Long Sleeve Blouse Detail

Women's Madewell Long Sleeve Blouse, Size Large - Cost to Keep $25.99

I really wanted to love this top, but I didn't love the fit or color. The front was very short, if I lift my arms you see my entire stomach, yet the back was extra long. There wasn't a ton of shape to it like most plaid shirts that are out now. I think I could have liked this if the fit was better, it would be a great casual top that I could easily toss on in a pinch and still look great!

ThredUP Box January 2018 Theory Long Sleeve Turtleneck

Women's Theory Long Sleeve Turtleneck, Size Large - Cost to Keep $53.99

I think I had this turtleneck back in the day in another color! I really love this top, it is simple, comfortable, and I love the color. Again, I might be basic, but work what you know works for you! The fabric is soft and looks great with a pair of jeans or with a high waisted skirt. An absolute keeper!

ThredUP Box January 2018 Adriano Goldschmied Jeans ThredUP Box January 2018 J.Crew Jeans ThredUP Box January 2018 J.Crew Jeans 2

Women's Adriano Goldschmied Jeans, Size 31 - Cost to Keep $25.99

Women's J.Crew Jeans, Size 31 - Cost to Keep $19.99

Women's J.Crew Jeans, Size 31 - Cost to Keep $19.99

I received three pairs of jeans in this box, sadly, none of them fit me. Ever since having my son, selecting the right size for pants can be tricky. It is never fun when something doesn't fit though, so I was pretty bummed about these not working. The lighter J.Crew pants are exactly my style so I know I would have loved them! I do have to wonder if the sizing is a bit off on these though, they might be petite even because all three were extremely short that even if they fit over my hips they would have been way too short to pair even with an ankle boot. I will have to go update my pants sizing in my account to make sure my next order is sure to fit!

The Verdict: I love consignment shopping, imagining a past adventure for a piece of clothing makes it so much more than just a shirt or a jean to me. I really wanted to love Goody Box and to find a few pieces that spoke their story to me. Sadly, I didn't love the majority of the styles that I received this month. I thought a lot of the pieces had a super high price point for the quality. A lot of the styles seemed to have fit issues, they seemed stretched and worn. I do think I could update my style profile a bit more to give more details, and I will be updating my sizing information for bottoms as well. The style profile could be built out a bit more to allow for more questions that would allow the boxes to be curated more specifically to your personal style. I think if this box had been a bit more to my taste, I could have looked past some of the fit issues, but I didn't fall in love with anything to the point that I thought "I have to have this!" I am excited to see what comes next for Goody Box!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Every box is different and packed based on the customer’s tastes and what’s available at the time.

Value Breakdown: The price to keep each item I received is listed above. Resale prices are at least slightly less than what the items would've been valued at when they were sold new. The average price across all 15 items I received was $26.92. I was surprised by the total and average values just based on the quality of each piece that I received.

Remember that the deposit on the box was $20.00, and that while it's non-refundable, the deposit can be applied to whatever you keep. That means if I keep at least one $20.00-ish item from the box, I've made the box worth it.

One last important thing to note about value! When you request a box, you'll be able to pick a price range you'd like to stick to for individual items. Mine was $50-$100, but if you wanted, you could also go lower (the lowest is $10-$25) or higher, depending on your preferences.

I just got my box and I got some cute pieces. I got AG and Joe’s jeans for under $25. Super happy with the box.

While I like basics, I’m just not willing to pay $25-30 for them unless they are really good quality, long-lasting stuff – and this isn’t that. I don’t mind somewhat of a price hike for curation and shipping but this is too much. I really want to like this though.

I feel the same way, I wanted to fall in love at least with a few pieces, but quality and price just didn’t add up. Thanks for your post!

I ordered a Fancy Finds box and have to say I was disappointed. I wouldn’t consider anything I received to be “fancy”, more office attire in my opinion. It was all tops and sweaters from Loft and J Crew mostly. And most of it didn’t fit 🙁

My box was also missing an item that was listed, and one pair of jeans was a different brand than listed.

Taryn Lowman

I’m so sorry to hear you were missing an item! I agree it wasn’t anything that I loved in this box. Thanks for your post!

For me, the goodie box has been good.

In my details I kept it simple and to the pointo they can focus on what to pick.

Example:

I LOVE: Solid colors in black, grey, dark purple, maroon, rose, dark blue. Wash and wear styles.

Brands I LOVE: Gap and Banana Republic

I NEED: tunic length tops and sweaters, long cardigans and jackets

I NEVER wear: animal prints

I am a solid size 16 and have a 32/33 inseam in jeans.

I’m thinking about trying this out at the $10-$25 range but I’ve been wondering if the styles, brands and quality of the pieces would be that good. What have they been like in your experience?

TK

I don’t usually post negative comments but those clothes and prices are outrageous! Most of the clothes look very worn…stretched out and faded. Also dated. We may be sub addicts but we’re not idiots. You can’t put any old junk in a box and expect us to buy it!! Thanks for the excellent, honest review!

I’ve been doing my own version of this custom box for a couple years now with ThredUp. I originally ordered about $200+ in items for a total of about 20 items, and sent back what I don’t like for credit. I’ve been parlaying that credit for another 10-15 items each time, with an additional out of pocket of $30 or so each order, and continuing the process every couple of months, when I want to try some new things. I go through and pick out some items that I think are my style, and then a few things I want to branch out and try, and really have found some great items this way. This works well because ThredUp has such a great return policy, I can just package up what I don’t like and request a return label for those items. Also, in getting these new items, I’ve been cleaning out my closet and sending items that I haven’t worn to ThredUp for credit as well. The lowest I received for one bag was $18 (for mainly tees and some lower value items), the highest was $80 (for some anthropologie pieces, and boutique items) — the amount you receive for the bag all depends on the items and the resale value. The fit issues are the biggest challenge with ThredUp, and what makes this new curation possibly not as successful as it could be. If they were able to match the buyer’s measurements with each piece, I think it would be much more successful.

I do this exact same thing with swap.com! 🙂

This was a terribly blah box with no outstanding pieces. I just received my Fancy Finds box, and it was pretty good. Sure, it had a few things in there that were absolutely terrible, but the majority was what I wanted. I gave a detailed description of what I like (eye-catching clothing, color block, dresses, nonconventional styles, comfortable material) and what I don’t like (boring, drab, conservative, no jeans, no sleeveless, no miniskirts), and I sent the link to my Pinterest board as well as clothing brands I like. I am a size M and everything they sent fits me. You cannot give enough detail—the more detail and examples you give, the better your box will be.

Taryn Lowman

I really should have given more detail! I am going to go back in and update for sure. Thank you for your suggestions!

Waaayyyy overpriced and outdated designs!!! I can only imagine was kinds of pieces would have been sent for the lower price boxes.

I love the concept of Thred Up and other consignment stores, but I can’t get over the prices! Yeas ago, you used to be able to get great deals on used clothing, but it seems like those days are gone. As others have said, I can get awesome brand new clothes on sale for much cheaper than they are selling used items. It’s always a turn-off for me. Even when I find something on their site that I like, I can’t bring myself to pay what they are asking.

Thanks for the great review though! I had been wondering about this new Goody Box service and if it would be worth it.

Reply ButtonReply

Bella01d

I too think it’s expensive. Girls I live in California and we have so many consignment shops. The items I see here are usually 2 to 3 dollars where I live. And I cant see myself spending so much on these shown items. If you go to The Beverly Hills Co. of used clothes, you can get a Micheal Kors Jacket for 25.00. just saying.

Of course, thank you for your post!

This box didn’t have any standout winners (unlike the Fancy Finds with the cape). I would be annoyed if I got such high price points for stretched out pieces.

Reply ButtonReply

Aarjullor

The Olivia M cardigan looks great on you! That’s the only thing I thought was a keeper, and priced more fairly then others. The prices they’re charging are outrageous! These are used clothing they’re selling for closer to retail. That ain’t right. There are a few pieces that look fairly new, but others look more then gently used. That Joie pullover looks busted, and they’re selling it $60+, that’s crazy business. After reading this and one other review on this sub, it’s a firm no for me.

Thank you, I agree that was the only piece I really liked!

I have no idea why people love Thred Up so much. I tried to consign there but I received a tiny fraction of what I could get on eBay or Poshmark – it was less than a deduction would have been if I had donated.

And the prices! Anthro, J Crew, all those brands you can get BRAND NEW with percent off sales for about what you are paying at Thred Up? That Anthro top is a lower end piece and probably was less than $60 to begin with. With Anthro’s frequent 30-40 percent off sale sales, a similar shirt would be about $10-$15 NEW. Those kind of sales are why I have a massive wardrobe of ridiculous stuff that I never pay more than $50 or so for.

J Crew has amazing sales- even staple line pieces rotate into sale. Even the Thred Up commercial proclaims prices that are higher than the sale prices at the retail shops!A

I have the “office styles” box coming and I hope it isn’t full of neutrals. I understand that some people like neutrals, and may prefer to get them, but I am not one of those people.

Did you say anything about color preferences when you filled out your profile?

Reply ButtonReply

Taryn Lowman

I said I liked more minimalistic styles, and that I wear a lot of black. So that could be what directed all of the neutrals for my box!

Reply ButtonReply

Ragan

OK, good. I said I liked bright colors and bold prints and never wear neutrals!

I look too Goth if I wear a lot of black.
