Target Arts & Crafts: Elmer's Rainbow Glitter Glue Review
Elmer's Rainbow Glitter Glue Set - Retail Value $19.99
This month, we're diverging a bit from having a project-based kit: We received a 31-count set of rainbow glitter glue!
Glitter glue is great for making art and scrapbooking of course if your kids or yourself so inclined. But it didn't surprise me at all to see the whole back of this box was about a very trendy DIY project for kids: making slime!
Although I have recently joked with other MSA reviewers about why we haven't seen any slime in subscription boxes, I had not actually made any myself. In my adult life, at least.
(Spoiler alert: It turns out there are actually a few slime subscriptions! Of course, there's a box for that!)
These 31 colors come in a simple plastic package organized by type of glitter. There are a few solid neon-y pastel type colors, but the rest are various shapes and shades of glitter suspended in clear or slightly tinted glue.

But of course, I had to take the plunge and make the slime. I thought this might be fun for my toddler, but I always try to test projects like this myself first to make sure they are toddler appropriate.
The box suggests using clear glue to show off your glitter, but try as I might, there was no clear glue at any local store I stopped at. Maybe the local kids have been making a run on it for slime purposes?
So after a quick Google, I resorted to the tried-and-true Borax and white glue method instead. To make this basic slime, the recipe is:
- Mix 1 cup water with 1 tsp of borax in a measuring cup
- Combine 4 oz of white glue with food coloring (and/or glitter glue) in a mixing bowl
- Use a splash of water to thin your glue out slightly
- Add the Borax/water mixture to the bowl
- Knead the mixture until slime forms!
My slime came out a bit on the tough side; I think maybe I didn't empty the 4 oz container of glue thoroughly enough? And of course, the final effect of using white glue + glitter isn't nearly as sparkly as it could be, but this one has a pleasant sort of frozen, wintry look to it. I definitely think my son would get a kick out of this, and I have an entire box of Borax on hand now... so methinks it's time to order some clear glue on Amazon for a future DIY day!
Verdict: This month of the Target Art & Craft Kit Subscription wasn't as high in value as some previous months, but it was over the price of the box by about $5. I liked that the glitter glue set was pretty on-trend if you have older kids who are into sliming, but also flexible enough to be used for general arts and crafts as well. Generall, I prefer the project-based kits, so I didn't love that I had to buy some additional supplies to make the slime... but it was totally fun anyway. I'm definitely looking forward to doing this project again with my son and my niece.
For this subscription overall, the kits we've received have ranged from $14.99 - $30 at usual retail prices. Like many 'surprise' subscriptions, there's always the risk that you'll get something that you or your kids don't like. Aside from a few odd boxes, I think most have been appropriate.
