Green Piñata December 2017 Review

Green Pinata Box December 2017 - Hape Farm Animals Peg Puzzle Green Pinata Box December 2017 - Hape Farm Animals Peg Puzzle 2

Hape Farm Animals Peg Puzzle - Retail Value $11.99 (found here for $9.76)

These wooden peg puzzles are the best! My son is obsessed with animals and loves matching the puzzle piece to its shape on the board. We will even play a game to match animal sounds to each piece, to make it extra fun! I love how easy each piece is to move around with the pegs and how bright each drawing is. Plus, puzzles like this really help to build fine motor, cognitive, and language skills in your little one.

Green Pinata Box December 2017 - Hape Spring-A-Ling

Hape Spring-A-Ling - Retail Value $12.97

This is a great toy to take with you on the go in the car, at the grocery store, as something to distract your little one at a restaurant. The maze is this amazing blue color that my son loved, and each bead is wooden and so bright. The toy also helps to build fine motor and cognitive skills. At first, my son thought this was something fun to throw around since it made a cool sound once it hit the carpet. However, once I started to make up fun games, he really got a kick out of this toy. We used it to count each bead and sometimes the beads would race!

Green Pinata Box December 2017 - Hape My Pet Kitty Green Pinata Box December 2017 - Hape My Pet Kitty Book Green Pinata Box December 2017 - Hape My Pet Kitty Toys

Hape My Pet Kitty - Retail Value $9.99 (found here for $6.79)

Books that come with a toy version of the characters are my favorite! My son loves to read, but he really enjoyed seeing the characters on the pages that he was also holding in his hand. I think a toy like this really helps with imaginative play and storytelling. After we read the book, we took the kitty and girl on different adventures throughout our house. The kitty took a ride in a wagon, they met all of our superheroes, and they even got a tour of our kitchen. We have a dog that my son is slowly learning how to play nicely with, so having these toys was also a great way to help him understand how important the relationship between animal and owner can be and that we are always supposed to be very nice and gentle with our pets. I really loved this book and toy set and I know my son did as well!

Green Pinata Box December 2017 - Hape Pyramid Of Play Green Pinata Box December 2017 - Hape Pyramid Of Play 2 Green Pinata Box December 2017 - Hape Pyramid Of Play 3

Hape Pyramid Of Play - Retail Value $33.00

Blocks are a toddler's best friend I think. This set is honestly so beautiful and being wooden won't get damaged the way some of my son's paper block sets have. This set has numbers, colors, and animals listed plus they are great for stacking. We used this set so much to go over our numbers, to count the animals, and to name the colors. My son loved stacking and knocking down the blocks over and over again, which I tried to picture above. This really is the type of toy that is going to get a lot of use, but that you know will last through many years and other siblings!

Green Pinata Box December 2017 - Blocks

Bonus Item: Wooden Blocks

This set of blocks was not listed in my account as a toy for the month. I tried to find a small set like this online, but most wooden block sets come in bigger packets. Even though I wasn't able to find this set online or listed in my account, they were a huge hit with my son! Again, blocks are great for toddler's so he spent a lot of time stacking and knocking these over. We also used them to go over our shapes and colors!

Green Pinata Box December 2017 - Playing

Here is an action shot of Fox playing with all of his cool new toys! So happy that these came on a snow day to help keep him entertained for the morning.

Verdict: Green Piñata is such a unique way to play and test toys before purchasing! I love that you can rent a curated box for your child's age, allow them to play with each set of toys, and purchase or return without a problem. For me, toys are coming and going like the wind and I never know what is going to catch my son's attention. Green Piñata allows us to watch him interact with the toys for a few days (or as long as I'd like) before deciding if we should keep or send them back for a fresh new box. This month's curation was stellar, providing my son with a ton of joy and entertainment! I also love that Green Piñata lists what is special about the toy, what skills are built through playing, and suggested ways to play all through my account.

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? Each box is customized to your child's age, so you might not get this exact box. You can order today to get a January box!

Let me get this straight – you pay $25 for the box. If you don’t keep any of the toys, you are out $25.

If you buy just the peg puzzle, you are out $25 + $10 (current Amazon price) = $35. That’s a really expensive puzzle.

If you buy just the Spring-a-ling puzzle, you will be paying $25 + $13 (Amazon price) = $38.

If you decide to just keep the book and figures, you will pay $25 + $7 = $32. What a deal!

If you just purchase the pyramid an blocks, you will have paid $25 + $33 = $58.

If you buy all of the toys, you are out $25 + $65 = $90.

However, if you were to buy all of the toys directly from Amazon, you would only pay $10 + $13 + $7 + $33 = $63. And you get free shipping to boot.

Essentially, that $25 is for the “free” shipping both ways for Green Pinata. And since the probably pay bulk rate, their cost is much less than $12.50 each way.

Better to go on Amazon, find Hape Toys, and see what they have to offer. Or go to a garage sale and find something similar for a much lower price. Try a toy store if you want to see if he likes any given toy.

Basically, you are spending $25 x 12 = $300/year with nothing to show for it.

Hi Teresa, I am from Green PIñata and just want to clarify. The whole point of the service is it is a rental subscription. For kids under age 5 with their rapid brain development happening in the early years (90% of the brain develops with in the first 5 years), they outgrow toys in days or weeks. These toys can be rented for a month just for $24.99 and typically, kids that age don’t want to hangaround those toys longer. If they get attached to a toy you can buy at amazon price (if it is brand new) or discounted price if you received a used toy (we would know what you received). The whole point is around saving money and reducing clutter and not get stuck with toys your kids have outgrown. Hopefully that helps clarify 🙂

I definitely see value in being able to try out different toys before buying them. And I also see value in being able to rent a variety of toys to spice up your play and learning routines, even just for a few weeks at a time. I just think that $25/mo is too much for renting toys if there’s no discount on the (used) toys that you want to keep.

@Sarah, I am from Green Piñata. You are right, just like you mentioned, our customers see value in not having to buy the toys only to find 1. Kids don’t like the toys at all or 2. They outgrow toys fast because they get bored of the toys too fast in such young age as their brand develops rapidly. We do apply discounts on used toys. We have asked mysubscriptionaddiction folks to fix it in the review 🙂 Hope that helps.

Oh, for safety/privacy’s sake, you might want to cover up your return address on the return label picture – you never know who is seeing these pictures!

I really like this subscription, but it’s odd to me that they do not discount the toys you want to keep. I mean… they’re used! If you have to pay the Amazon price to keep the toy, I’d probably just send it back and order a brand new one off of Amazon, partially out of spite and also because I’d earn more points on my Prime Rewards card. Am I missing something? Like, if you purchase the toys through Green Pinata do you earn points to apply to your subscription or something?

Sara

Agree it’s really weird the toys aren’t discounted. I could go to a consignment store and get toys for less money. The little cat figure and the little girl figure do look used to me, I wouldn’t pay full price for them.

@Sara, I am from Green Piñata. We do apply discounts on used toys. The point is simply missing in the review. We have asked Taryn to fix it 🙂

Thanks for your post!

Taryn Lowman

Thanks for your post! The rental format is just a fun way to test drive new toys, and they offer a great look into what skills your child will develop and how to play with each toy. The toys never seem to be used, always in wonderful condition!

I think that the block set is part of the Hape Kid’s Pyramid of Play toy since they fit the holes on the blocks (they’re pictured together on the Amazon listing).

OMG you are right! They came packaged separately so I didn’t even realize that. Thank you so much for pointing that out!
