Star Wars Ultimate Activity Case - Retail Value $24.99
My eyes lit up when I pulled this out of the box. It's kind of big, like the size of a small tackle box!
With the new Star Wars film coming out soon, my husband hasn't stopped talking about it in months, so it was cool to see Target do something kind of topical with this subscription. Most months have been a little more "girly," with Fashion Plates last month and jewelry crafting a few months earlier, so this definitely seemed like a change of pace.
I did notice, however, that the copyright on the packaging is 2015... so it's not actually a new product for the new film.
I always love having storage for toys, so my first impression was: it's nice that this set comes in a cool case that could easily be repurposed for other toys and such. Once you take out the display packaging, there's a lot of extra room in here for action figures and such.
Let's see what sorts of activities we have in store for this box:
First up is this Star Wars activity pad.
I feel like this is the kind of thing my parents would indulge me in before a long road trip. Compared to the overall scale of the box, it's small (only about 6" x 6") but has a variety of different little things, like word searches, coloring pages, and activities for the included stamps.
The scenes are honestly pretty cool and really detailed (although I feel like if I colored them in they'd look worse than they do in black and white).
The box comes with a set of six mini markers so you can fill things in.
Plus three stamps: Empire, Rebels, and a tie fighter, and a small stamp pad to go with them. These are neat on their own (which kid doesn't love stamps?) but can also be used with some of the activities in the booklet:
There are also a couple of sticker sheets included, which again can be used in the book or by themselves.
I was feeling pretty underwhelmed by this so far. Coloring books just are not what I expect from this subscription, even if they are Star Wars related. (And this one is SO SMALL!) But, the case opens up more, so I had some hope:
Inside this drawer was another portable activity... magnets!
These have a variety of classic trilogy characters and ships, with some fun laser/lightsaber lines so you can enact various scenarios.
There are also two background panels that you can use to stage your scenes if you don't have a fridge handy. These are about 6" x 8".
While I love Star Wars, I was again feeling a little underwhelmed by this 'activity'. This box is usually something fun that I can share with my son or my niece that we can do together, but this very much felt like a pack of stuff to keep a kid occupied in a restaurant or airplane, in a carrying case that's very oversized.
Verdict: This month of the Target Art & Craft Kit Subscription is definitely disappointing for me. Even though this set is $24.99 at retail, and I was initially excited because I'm a Star Wars fan... this just wasn't an 'arts and crafts' type activity like we've enjoyed in past boxes. It's not as fun or creative in my opinion, and the items themselves just feel small and underwhelming. Plus, Star Wars fandom is super subjective, so even though I like the franchise I know it's not something that all subscribers are guaranteed to like or even really know.
Maybe I'm wrong– if you have a kid who loves Star Wars and who loved this, definitely leave a comment!
For this subscription overall, the kits we've received have ranged from $14.99 - $30 at usual retail prices. I always note each month that this subscription carries the risk that not every month will be something you or your kids will actually like, so it feels like after my winning streak of the past few months' of this box, I finally got a clunker.
