Tutiibag December 2017 Review

You usually get a pretty good mix of different skincare items and tools as well as a tool or makeup item with this subscription.  One sheet mask is also typically included:

The bag came with this information card. It didn’t actually have any product details so I had to guess when it came to a few items…

Mediheal Warming Eye Mask

Mediheal Warming Eye Mask – Retail Value $4 (found here for $3.49)

The bear is unscented (you can also get a citrus version or a lavender version). These work kind of like Thermacare heat wraps, but for the eyes. I don’t have eye strain from mobile phone use (mentioned on the product page) since I don’t have a smartphone, but I do have awful sinus headaches lately, and these are wonderful for breaking up some of the congestion. I used this the night I opened the package!

Farmstay Olive Intensive Moisture Foam Cleanser

Farmstay Olive Intensive Moisture Foam Cleanser (100 mL) – Retail Value $6 (found here for $5.99)

This was a gentle, non-drying facial cleanser. I didn’t actually find that it foamed very much, and I preferred it for a second step in a two-step cleansing routine instead of used on its own (especially to remove makeup), but I was in need of a new cleanser and this was a generous size and will definitely work for me.

My Beauty Tool Exfoliating Jellyfish Silicon Brush

My Beauty Tool Exfoliating Jellyfish Silicon Brush – Retail Value $6.20

FYI, they mean “silicone” and not “silicon” (silicones are rubbery or oily polymers that have silicon in the backbone, but silicon is hard, brittle, and crystalline on its own). Anyway, this works rather like one of those brushes for dishes that you put soap into, only it exfoliates and massages the face. I do think it helps with foaming a bit (so it can enhance the action of the cleanser above), but in general, I am just not personally big on tools to aid skin cleansing (I let my cat Sneaky run off with a Foreo Luna Play once, no idea where it went).

Missha Mystery Product

Missha Mystery Product (2 mL?)

The only information I had to go by with this product was the Missha US website listed on the bottom. Inspection of the contents revealed something vaguely serum- or moisturizer-like, so I think I have this pinned down to this product based on matching up the lettering on the package:

MISA Geum Sul Rejuvenating Cream – Estimated Value $1.60 (Buy 50 mL for $40, found here for $28)

This is an anti-aging product that is supposed to repair wrinkles and brighten the skin. It has some crazy ingredients. Wild ginseng, antler powder, and reishi mushrooms are fermented in a 24K gold vessel, and that’s just to start. (For what it’s worth, I *think* the “antler” here is a type of mushroom and not an animal product.) This is supposed to nourish the skin (that’s kind of vague) as well as firm it, smooth it, and strengthen the skin’s barrier function. This does have hyaluronic acid, so it may not be vegan. Anyway, this was a light moisturizer that absorbed quickly and a little goes a long way, so even though these containers are tiny, there is enough to use for at least a few days.

The Saem Natural Tox Tomato Mask Sheet

The Saem Natural Tox Tomato Mask Sheet – Retail Value $1.99

Tomato allegedly helps with skin elasticity, though I’m having trouble finding a good ingredients list to see why. Interestingly, this one is free of animal-based ingredients, which is a rarity in K-beauty products. (It is also free of parabens and mineral oil.) I do know that tomato has a lot of vitamins and antioxidants, and I’m assuming some of them made it into this mask. Plus, I found it moisturizing which is nice since it’s very dry out where I live right now and my skin is feeling it. I would be interested in getting more of these to try out over time and really see the effects.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $19.79 for the December 2017 TutiiBag. As usual, take that with a grain of salt. Prices vary widely for these items depending on whether you buy from a US-based seller or straight from Korea, and many of the items have vastly different prices on Amazon, eBay, etc. I do feel that this is a representative month for this subscription, and all the items were new to me. I was especially grateful for the warming eye mask (I needed that!) and the cleanser is super useful to me as well. The other items were fun to try, too.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first shipment would be January’s.

Value Breakdown: At $15.95 for this subscription, you’re paying approximately the following per item:

  • Warming Eye Mask $3.22
  • Cleanser $4.84
  • Exfoliating Brush $5
  • Missha Rejuvenating Cream $1.29
  • Tomato Mask $1.60

That mystery product is scary! Not. Sure if I would put that on my face!

I think the fermentation in a 24K gold vessel is just a gimmick. I doubt it has much effect. But some of the reasons I like K-beauty products so much are the crazy ingredients.
