Box2Bake November 2017 Review

Box2Bake Box November 2017 -0004

Here is everything that you will need to make the cookies!

Box2Bake Box November 2017 -0005

This month’s Box2Bake kit is called "Welcome to Germany" with Zimtsterne (Star Cookies).

Here are all of the dry ingredients that we will need to bake the cookies. Everything comes pre-measured which makes cooking a breeze! For me, measuring is the worst part and I usually make a huge mess, but this is all packaged nicely.

The next main ingredients are honey and vinegar. Again, both are measured and packaged for ease when baking. The honey will be used for the dough and the vinegar is for the icing.

Now for the cookie cutter! I am not sure why the shape is of an angel with these being called 'star cookies,' but I really love this shape either way. I know I will be getting a lot of use out of this over the years.

Bonus Items

There wasn't a note about what this bonus item is, but if I had to guess I would say these are ornaments. I can't be sure though so don't quote me on that. Just attached a little string through the hole and attach to your tree. I love the gold tones!

Now for the fun part, baking! I started by putting all of the honey in a saucepan on very low heat. I kept a close eye on this because you want it to just lightly boil and then quickly remove from the heat. This won't take long!

Box2Bake Box November 2017 -0015

Next, I added my flour and spice mix. I want to note here that I received an email from Box2Bake suggesting that some members found this cookie to be a bit bitter and that you can add a pinch of the spice mixture if you wish. Unfortunately, I didn't receive this email until after I made my cookies. More to come on this though.

Once I got that honey to a boil, I removed it from the heat. Then I added 1/4 cups of unsalted butter and my package of brown sugar. I mixed this altogether completely until everything was combined and smooth. Mmmmmm, this smelled so good!

I added that yummy honey and butter liquid to my dry ingredients. Mix, mix mix! Once everything is combined, you will get this yummy dough. Since the liquid ingredients were warm, I just covered my bowl and set to the side. You want to wait a while for the dough to get to room temperature, this will make rolling easier.

Box2Bake Box November 2017 -0020 Box2Bake Box November 2017 -0021

Once my dough was cool, I added some flour to my kitchen island and got my rolling pin. I rolled the dough slowly out into a long sheet.

Box2Bake Box November 2017 -0022

Then it was time to cut out my cookie shapes! I would roll out any extra dough and continue making cookie shapes until my dough was basically gone.

Into the oven, they go! I set my oven to 350 degrees and will bake for 6 to 10 minutes.

While I waited for my cookies to bake, I made the icing. You start by adding one egg white to your bowl of powdered sugar, combine well. Then, you had the container of vinegar and mix really well until everything is combined. I used a whisk for this part. I have to note that I have never made icing this way and was a bit nervous to use an egg white in something that wouldn't then be cooked. I don't know if I did something wrong here, though, because my icing did not turn out. It was basically egg white and a very strong vinegar smell. I whisked and whisked but it never got past this soup like texture. Unfortunately, I decided that this icing was not something that I could use and had to discard.

Finally, my cookies were done! Here are the beautiful angel cookies cooling. I will start by saying that getting the email from Box2Bake about the spice mix made so much sense! These were extremely bitter, to the point that we just could not eat them. In fact, they were bitter to the point that I thought I maybe did something wrong. I went back through each step and packet that I used to ensure that I didn't (I was baking later in the evening so anything was possible). I had my parents try them to see if they liked them, but alas they agreed that they were way too bitter to enjoy. I guess I could say they were a cross between a gingerbread and molasses cookie, but way stronger on the spice end. Sadly, no one in my family got to really enjoy these cookies.

Verdict: This was my first experience with Box2Bake, and while I love the concept, I just didn't enjoy the cookies. Food boxes can be tricky because you never really know what you are going to receive and everyone's tastes are different. For me, the cookies were just too bitter, but I am sure there are people that love this style of cookie. I can't help but wonder too how these would be with the icing on them. I am still thinking I did that step incorrectly. Box2Bake really does make baking simple, and I really enjoyed the whole baking process with this first box. I am excited to see what next month has to offer!

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No, you will receive next month's box.

Value Breakdown:  At $24.99 for this box, the 6-8 servings come out to $3-4 per cookie. Almost all ingredients were included, minus butter and eggs, so the ease of baking with this box is a plus. However, I think the cost is a bit high considering you could make a similar cookie for much less by purchasing the ingredients at the store. I would like to see the recipes make a little more or come with maybe something extra in the future to bring the overall value up.

That icing was doomed from the start. It is supposed to be royal icing and the recipe I have calls for 3 egg whites, 5 cups of powdered sugar and 1/4 tsp. vinegar. It appears they gave you a lot more vinegar for a much smaller batch of icing.

That is really good to know, I honestly thought I did something wrong!

All I was thinking while reading this review is how many cookie dough logs I could buy with $25. Way to stay positive Taryn! But, this sub is ridiculous. The Martha & Marley box in November was $38.99, included 4 different mixes and made over 100+ cookies.

Thank you so much for the post! I agree, it isn’t much for the cost. I am hoping next month will be better, stay tuned!

I like the idea but $25 to make 6 cookies seems a bit underwhelming.

I agree!

So not worth the money. For 25 bucks I could make dozens and dozens of different cookies… and cookie cutters are cheap….

My guess would be the vinegar would be to “cook” the egg whites (think of what lemon juice does to raw chicken) and prevent the dreaded salmonella. Most people use pasteurized eggs anyway, which are technically safe to eat uncooked.

Very strange to include this in a kit for novice bakers. Powdered sugar and milk make a fairly easy icing that should harden and would be appropriate for these cookies.

That is really interesting! I figured it was the vinegar that did it, but either way the icing turned out so strange I just couldn’t use it.
