Fashion Plates Design Set - Retail Value $19.99

Dear Target: I am officially renaming your Arts & Crafts subscription to "Nostalgic-&-Creative-Toys-from Your-Childhood Box". That seems to be the theme for the last few months and with this fashion plates set, it shows no signs of stopping!

Detail of Fashion Plates Design Set

Seriously, I think everyone I know had a set like this growing up!

If you're not familiar: Fashion plates let you mix-and-match various embossed plates with tops and bottoms, then create a crayon rubbing that you can then color in.

The kit comes filled with everything that aspiring young fashion designers need to get started: a drawing tray, 15 mix and match fashion plates, 20 sheets of paper, 8 coloring crayons, 2 rubbing crayons, a crayon holder, storage tray, and idea guide.

"Storage tray" is a little misleading; it's really just the flimsy plastic packaging from the earlier photo. So you'd need to plan on storing everything in the original packing to truly keep it organized.

The rubbing crayon is super important in the world of fashion plates! These are perfectly sized to work with the kit but of course, they are easy to replace when they wear down. The crayon holder makes it easier for kids to manage.

I can't remember if the ones I had as a kid were like this, but the fashion plates have textures on the reverse side that you can use when coloring in your designs!

Drawing tablet and instructions

They've included some paper and instructions with some fashion ideas inside, too.

The drawing tray opens so you can assemble your selected plates inside. Add paper on top and close the lid, and you're ready to go!

It's tough to see in this photo, but we also used some of the textured backgrounds to color in the shirt and pants here. They definitely didn't show up well on the shirt, but I really like the lines on the shorts– they make it look like real denim!

Voila! There are only 20 sheets of paper in this pad, so it won't last a really long time... but it's easy enough to use regular printer paper and crayons with this kind of kit, so you won't need to spend a fortune on refills when things start to run out.

A hat tip to this subscription box for another month of nostalgia!

Verdict: For me, this was another enjoyable Target Art & Craft Kit Subscription this month, and definitely a toy we haven't seen before in this box. I'm looking forward to sharing this specific toy with my 5-year-old niece because I don't think she has anything like it. This month was a fair overall value: we saved $5 by subscribing for $14.99 compared to buying this specific toy for $19.99.

For this subscription overall, the kits you receive will range in price from roughly $14.99 - $30 depending on the selections. I enjoy the surprise and convenience of having something new to share with my kid (and my niece) without a lot of planning and overhead, and this price point is reasonable for me. There is always a bit of a risk that a given selection won't be a home run with your kid, depending on their interests, so definitely keep that in mind and check out our past reviews to see what other types of items we've received before you sign up. They do vary between open-ended creative toys like this one and more 'project' based kits with a specific goal in mind.

Wow, what a throwback! I used to love my Fashion Plates 🙂 Looking at the pictures, I can almost hear the “chunk chunk” sound of the rubbing crayon holder hitting the plastic frame as it moves up and down. Ah, memories…

When I signed up at the middle of last month, this is what i received. I should be getting another item next week, I hope it’s something great. I signed up when I saw last months review, because i really wanted it. I was slightly disappointed I didnt get it. I guess I’m just getting things a little early since I signed up mid month.

Wow, this brings me back. I forgot how much I loved a similar set I played with when I was young. I remember having so much fun playing with the set. My mom had a few toys that she had saved from when she was a young girl, and would only bring them out for me to play with every once in a while. I would ask often, but she would tell me that we needed to wait until a special day. For example, she would bring them out after I got a shot at the doctor, or was sick in bed, or did a great job at the school play. The reason I am sharing this is that you could save a few fun toys you receive in the boxes you get and create your own special toy box to share with your daughter, niece and perhaps, eventually, grandchildren.

That looks like an old school toy from back in the day, I can’t think of the name…

I had a similar toy, but the plates were of Barbie.

Would this still be available if you subbed today to this box or does it start in December?
