Date Box June 2017

The first thing I pulled out of my box was an info booklet.

Date Box June 2017

Date Box June 2017

This month’s project was making little clay pots and planting your own little indoor herb garden set.

Date Box June 2017

They also include a “date guide” to help you time/coordinate your project, discussion, and snacks, etc.

Date Box June 2017

One thing I love about DateBox is that every box comes with a Spotify playlist that goes along with your date to set the mood.

Date Box June 2017

Obviously, instructions for how to make and paint the pots were also included.

Date Box June 2017

…As well as instructions for planting.

Date Box June 2017

Every month also includes conversation topics and conversation starters.

Date Box June 2017

Sipperville Strawberry Lemonade – 4 oz, Value $3.98

Sour Patch Kids – 8 oz, Value $1.78

Here are the snacks for this box – a powdered mix for strawberry lemonade, and sour patch kids! I was excited – I love this candy and lemonade. Unfortunately, I was pretty let down with the beverage. Personally, I love fresh lemonade or the Simply Lemonade kind from the store – I haven’t had powdered lemonade since I was a child. All that to say, it could just be that this was as good as powdered lemonade gets and it just wasn’t my taste.

Date Box June 2017

Pack of Clay

Crayola Anti-Dust Chalk – 12 sticks, Value $0.73

This chalk is for writing the name of the herbs on the pots once they’re baked and painted. I’m glad they included a whole box. The clay was tough to work with – of course you had to knead it to get it warm and pliable before sculpting your pots, but it was a big chunk of clay and was super hard to knead at all at first. And then, once I got it smooth, enough to work with, it seemed melty and drooped while I was working with it. I made it work but it was a little extra work.

Deco Art Americana Chalk Paint – 2 oz, Value $1.87

Foam Brushes – 2 count, Total Value $1

And, of course, the chalkboard paint and foam brushes to paint the pots once they’re baked.

Date Box June 2017

Basil, Parsley, and Cliantro seeds

Wonder Soil discs

Lastly, they included 3 packets of herb seeds – I love that they include care/sun and water directions on the packets (which are also adorably designed). The Wonder Soil discs were simple – you cut them open and add water to get them to expand and crumble into normal, usable soil. These expanded like crazy upon impact with water but you let them “soak” to get damp and completely crumbled. They included way more soil than I needed!

Date Box June 2017

Here are our pots! They included instructions, but no inspiration/ideas. In the info booklet, they provided a link for tips and ideas, but I just found a video (made mostly with slides/word frames) that didn’t give any more information than the info booklet. I would have liked to see some ideas for designs. I feel like these all look super kid crafty.

Date Box June 2017

We baked the pots, and by that point, it was late enough that we just let them cool overnight and painted them the next day (since we do our date nights after Gideon has gone to bed, it was too late to wait the entire time for them to bake (1 hr) and cool.

Date Box June 2017

Here’s a look at just how much dirt those two discs actually expanded into!

Date Box June 2017

The uneven surfaces of the pots made it hard to use the chalk in a very legible way, but here are our finished products!

Verdict: This month’s DateBox was a cute idea! I don’t know if I feel like this DateBox had the quality/value/execution that the rest of the boxes we’ve received had, but it was still pretty fun. It was hard to eat the candy and lemonade while our hands were covered in clay while making our pots but we enjoyed them while the pots were baking and going through the discussion questions.

I think DateBox has an awesome idea and love that they provide something different (that I don’t have to come up with or plan!) for a date night every month. I also love that these work as at-home dates so we can do them after the baby is in bed for the night – saves us the trouble of worrying about babysitters. This is our fourth DateBox and I’m happy with the variety of dates they’ve sent, too – our first was a fantastic box with an at-home escape game, then we had a DIY coffee roasting/tasting, and we’ve had painting and now DIY indoor herb garden. You can preview a few of their boxes and themes on their website and I’m always excited to see what kind of box I’m going to get next!

Overall, my impression of DateBox is that they are well-developed and professional. I do recommend this for couples! I think it’s a great option for us to help intentionally carve out time together, and usually I can confidently say it’s worth the $34 price, especially since it made date night easy enough that we didn’t need to go out or get a sitter (this month feels like we got a little less out of it but that may just be our personal couple-taste, too).

Did your pots stay partially pliable? I have baked them for far longer than an hour and they are not solid clay as I was expecting, so I wanted to see how hard your clay turned out.

Thank you!

I got 3 boxes… things i would do with my toddlers… not my husband… I also sent so many different messages hoping the next box would improve… it just got worse… maybe this 3rd box has some hope… its like an escape room type game which is better than the star gazing one i got when there was 2 feet of snow outside. We have yet to use any of them… i want to be able to use the whole box not just half a date…
