The Badass Life Book by Christmas Abbott – Value $18.30 on Amazon (retail price $28.99)
I have not received any books in fitness subscription boxes before although I am totally open to it. This is basically a self-help workbook for changing habits (eek, writing in a hardback book!). I am intrigued by the premise although I have to do some thinking about what habits I might want to change and also how to work with the spiritual health aspect because I am just not a religious or spiritual person at all. At any rate, I have a few days before I am recovered enough from my oral surgery to begin exercising in earnest again so that is time to read the book more thoroughly and do some thinking!
Lifeaid Beverage Company Travelaid – Value $2.49 (buy a case of 24 cans for $59.76)
This has some vitamins and herbs for immunity as well as some calming herbs (valerian, chamomile, etc.). I’ve received this in other fitness subscription boxes and I don’t think the flavor is too medicinal, despite all the herbal ingredients. For what it’s worth, I also like that the herbs aren’t strange things I’ve never heard of (and have to go look up on WebMD). I am totally fine with consuming ginger, turmeric, etc. (I can’t say if it helps with travel because I haven’t done any traveling for awhile.)
Bourn Relentless Preworkout Samples in Strawberry Lemonade (2 servings) – Value $1?
Bourn Relentless is Christmas Abbott’s new product line. You can’t buy this online yet, and the information card doesn’t give a value for this, so I’ve provided my best estimate. Given the lack of information online, I do appreciate the full ingredients list and nutrition facts panel on the back of the packets! I’m not exercising this week due to oral surgery recovery but I did like the flavor of this. It has 150 mg of caffeine per serving (like 1.5 cups of coffee, roughly), some B vitamins, vitamin C, and a handful of other compounds you often see in fitness supplements (beta-alanine, betaine, taurine, etc.)
Exosleeve Sweat Essentials Bag – Listed Value $19.99
This isn’t available from the Exosleeve shop. It is pretty plain inside, no compartments or anything. It is bigger than your average makeup bag and even somewhat protective; you could throw some small items like jewelry in here for traveling or keep it in a gym bag (it’s water- and sweat-resistant) if there are items in there you want to segregate from everything else.
Bourn Relentless Sleep and Recovery – Listed Value $14.99
This is another not-yet-available product. As far as I can tell, it is vegetarian (uses hypromellose in the capsules instead of gelatin). It just contains herbs like valerian and turmeric. It does also have some food dyes. I can’t say whether or not this helped me sleep last night because I have been absolutely exhausted lately and haven’t needed much help. Probably going to save the rest for some time in the future when I’m having a bit more difficulty. I really don’t like taking sleep aids but this seems pretty harmless.
Bourn Relentless Hand Towel – Listed Value $4.99
I’m sure this is just in there for a branding opportunity but it is a practical item and not the usual kind of promotional merchandise I see in subscription boxes (I really don’t need any more stickers or refrigerator magnets…). (My camera would not take pictures of this on a white background…)
Livesore Cheekies – Value $19.95
I figured these would be exclusive to the box but I found them for sale online (and with a higher price than what the information card says). I am not much for lounging around in my underwear as suggested on the information card, but they are functional and I have to say, I don’t think I have ever received underwear in a subscription box before (unless it was something I picked out from AdoreMe).
Verdict: I calculated a value of $81.71 for the July Barbella Box. (That’s with the Amazon value of the book.) That’s a really good value for a fitness box that costs $50 or so! The theme this month was travel and I actually think it worked – there were some items to help you sleep and boost your immunity, the bag and towel which are definitely the types of things I’ve traveled with before, an extra pair of underwear, a book to keep your mind occupied for awhile, etc. It seems really well-curated and theme-centered while still coming up with some items that are not the same old things you get in every fitness subscription box.
