TopMunch June 2017 Snack Subscription Box

This month’s country is the Netherlands. Check out that gorgeous packaging! The included information booklet is also incredibly well designed, and it's extensive.

TopMunch June 2017 Snack Subscription Box

I love the travel guide section that includes things to do in the Netherlands. The TopPhrase portion is also really helpful in learning basic vocabulary. Explore everything from the music of the Netherlands (there’s even a QR code included for downloads!) to fun facts about the region.

This section details the 5 snacks to explore this month, so let’s get to it.

Casteleijn Syrup Wafers (Stroopwafel), 8.46 oz. - Value $5.50

These were way more delightful than I was expecting! The wafer itself reminded me a bit of a waffle, for obvious reasons. They're sort of like pizzelle cookie sandwiches with a barely sweet and very sticky caramel in the middle. I was truly addicted from the first bite and ate 3 in a row (and they're pretty large at 4 inches or so in diameter!). The really lovely packaging includes an image of an unmistakably Holland windmill which really set the tone for the rest of the box.

Euro Patisserie Cheese Crispies, 3.5 oz. - Value $6.75

This unique snack lives somewhere in between the cracker and parmesan crisp ends of the spectrum.  Described as 'Butter Cheese Puff Pastry Crispies' on the box, I would agree that this is entirely accurate. Loved the strong cheese flavor!

Gustaf's Licorice Drops, 5.29 oz. - Value $5.00

I'm not a huge licorice enthusiast, so I was surprised to be so excited about seeing these in my box. The international aspect of TopMunch just really intrigued me, and I was pretty interested in the idea of trying some real Dutch black licorice. Anyway, these were nice: strong licorice flavor in the form of chewy gummies. You'd probably have to especially love licorice to finish the bag, but they're fun to try even if you're not normally a huge fan.

Ruiter Banket Speculaas (Windmill Spiced Cookies), 14 oz. - Value $5.50

You receive a pretty large package of these cookies in this month's TopMunch box. Pretty awesome! Each cookie depicts an image or design that's traditional to Holland which was pretty cool to explore. I spotted a couple of figures dancing, a flower pot, and a windmill. The cookies are incredibly crispy and comparable to a less-sweet gingersnap cookie in flavor. Would be fantastic with tea!

Van Delft - CafŽ Noir, 7.05 oz. - Value $5.50

These aren't quite cookies, as you may expect. They're more like an only slightly sweet biscuit with a coffee glaze. Pretty unique to me, and quite delicious!

Verdict: The TopMunch mission to educate people about the different cultures of the world through food is really inspiring. Being an avid traveler that doesn't have as much opportunity to act on those wanderlust feels these days, I was thrilled to receive this box. I was even more thrilled to find the Netherlands as June's theme (Amsterdam is SO on my short list), and the enclosed snacks did not disappoint. I was impressed with each item being a full-sized package as well. I figured the value to be right around $28, and the $29 cost seems totally reasonable when you consider things like shipping cost. Keep it up with the beautiful design and quality snacks, TopMunch! Can't wait to see where you take us next.

Love the idea of this box! The information adds so much value to the snacks! It really feels like a little vacation in a box! I could imagine this being a really fun subscription to have and make a family night out of… listen to the music and learn about the country, maybe even have everyone try to find even more info about the country or find a movie or show from the country and try out all of the snacks!

I think you may have over valued the items in this box. I can buy most of it at my local grocery for a lot less. Never take the stated value they give with the box but look them up somewhere else.

I think generally the single unit prices are prohibitive as they are un-economical for the merchant. Prices get better with bulk orders, i can see that they have better pricing when going for 3+ items. Also, in my experience, the longer the duration of the subscription, better the pricing. I can see that the 3, 6, 12 month subscriptions are selling for $27, $25 and $24 a month respectively.

I think comparing single unit prices to bulk availability in neighborhood market (not all neighborhoods carry them), with time spent driving over and finding the items in shelves (if in stock) may not be a fair comparison.

$29 for THAT? The Stroopeafel can be bought in Walmart and Target and the proper size at to eat them is w tea or coffee. You put the waffle over the hot cup and let the steam soften the inside caramel. I’ve had them and they’re great. The windmill cookies can be bought for $1 in any Dollar General store. Here their price is $5? Ridiculous. Same goes for the other cookies. And that $20 jar of chocolate mushrooms? YUCK. This box is way overpriced and where’s the variety?
