Bean Box does a great job at labeling and describing their products. I found these cards very helpful when comparing my favorite products from the box.

Guatemala Hermosa from Victrola Coffee Roasters

“Toasty and clean, with nutty chocolate, marshmallow, and tart green apple.”

Jcoco Bali Sea Salt Toffee, 1 oz. – Value $2.50 (buy a box of 18 for $45)

“The tart finish to this nutty roast brightens up with the toffee, and the salt adds a whole new layer.”

Wow, the description for this coffee makes is sound so good. I rarely can discern all the flavors from the descriptions but it is fun trying anyway. This was not my favorite coffee though. I found the roast too light and the flavor a bit flat for me. The chocolate was good but not one of my favorites from the box.

Drip Blend from Herkimer Coffee (buy 12 oz. for $12 or 2 lbs. for $28.50)

“The perfect “everyday” drip coffee: a satisfying blend of cocoa and cherry flavors.”

Jcoco Arabica Cherry Espresso, 1 oz. – Value $2.50 (buy a box of 18 for $45)

“Chocolate-cherry coffee meets coffee-cherry chocolate.”

I’m not a drip blend kind of gal. Again I found the flavor too light and flat. The chocolate was good but not great.

Paladino Blend by Zoka Coffee Roasters

“Formulated for the perfect espresso or café au lait. Chocolate, nut, orange.”

Jcoco Cayenne Veracruz Orange, 1 oz. – Value $2.50 (buy a box of 18 for $45)

“This white chocolate bar is like a sweet splash of milk, perfect with an espresso blend. The citrus kick is icing on the (coffee) cake.”

Since I was on my third coffee by this time and wasn’t digging the flavors, I thought I better check the recommendations for water to grounds. Bean Box recommends filtered water of 3.5 cups to the 1.8 oz bag of coffee. I don’t have an espresso maker so I used my coffee press which does make a difference with this roast unfortunately. This time I measured out everything and again the coffee was too light on flavor. I’m sure I would have liked this better with an espresso machine. I really liked the orange flavor and the chocolate was one of my favorites as I loved the orange flavor with the kick of cayenne.

Roasters Choice by Lighthouse Roasters (buy 1 lb. for $15.50)

“Smooth, dark, and sophisticated: a classic old-school Seattle coffee.”

Jcoco Noble Dark, 1 oz. - Value $2.50 (buy a box of 18 for $45)

“This combination of rich dark flavors puts a modern Seattle spin on ‘traditional’.”

I figured out by this time that I needed less than the 3.5 cups of water that was recommended. I started using about a cup less of water and enjoyed the rest of the coffees much more. I liked this coffee since I really prefer dark roasts for my daily jolt. The chocolate was good but not my favorite dark chocolate. I typically enjoy dark chocolates but I found the milk chocolates better in this box.

Pano Blend by Keala's Coffee (buy a 12 oz. bag for $15.95)

“This bold, dark blend of Hawaiian and Latin Beans brings notes of Macadamia nut and sweet ginger.”

Jcoco Edamame Sea Salt, 1 oz. - Value $2.50 (buy a box of 18 for $45)

“Edamame and ginger are a classic Japanese-restaurant flavor pairing, and the nut-butter notes bring out the creaminess of the bar.”

This was one of my favorite coffee and chocolate pairings. The dark blend was right up my alley and the edamame added a nice texture to the bar.

Papua New Guinea YUS by Caffe Vita (buy a 12 oz. bag for $18)

“A smooth medium roast with a kaleidoscope of flavor: guava, hazelnut, honey, and sugarcane.”

Jcoco Agave Quinoa Sesame, 1 oz. - Value $2.50 (buy a box of 18 for $45)

“A sweet duo. We love the way the honey and agave notes interact, and a hint of tropical fruit adds lightness to crispy quinoa.”

Another good coffee and chocolate blend here. The quinoa was interesting and I could taste the slight sesame in the too. The coffee was a solid morning coffee.

Queen Anne Blend by Ladro Coffee Roasters (buy a 12 oz. bag for $13.50)

“A comforting medium roast with creamy chocolate and dried fruit, plum-perfect.”

Jcoco Black Fig Pistachio, 1 oz. - Value $2.50 (buy a box of 18 for $45)

“Cheerful fig takes center stage in this delightful blend of fruit and chocolate.”

This was a nice smooth medium blend that paired really well with the chocolate bar. This was probably my favorite chocolate and I don’t typically like fruit in my chocolate so that says a lot.

Fresh Crop Bright by Kuma Coffee (buy a 12 oz. bag for $17)

“Kuma’s fruitiest espresso blend shines with tropical fruits, citrus and banana.”

Jcoco Vanuatu Coconut Pecan, 1 oz. - Value $2.50 (buy a box of 18 for $45)

“Take a sip of sunshine with this cocktail-inspired combo of coconut chocolate and a light, full-bodied fruit smoothie of a coffee.”

I liked the dark espresso blend here but the chocolate was just okay for me. I found the flavor of the blend really interesting but alas, I couldn’t pick out everything in the description. Sadly, I don’t think I’m one of those supertasters.

Bean Box Deluxe Coffee + Chocolate Tasting Box - May 2017

Bean Box also sent along two blackberry crème chocolates in the box. They were good but I’m not really a fruit and cream chocolate person so these weren’t really my style of sweet.

Verdict: Despite that there were several coffees not to my particular liking, I still enjoyed trying the coffee and chocolate pairing in Bean Box. I think a person who drinks drip or more American style coffees would love this box but pretty much anyone could have fun with this box – especially if sharing with friends and comparing taste and flavors.

Bean Box sent a good mix of coffee and chocolate that I think would make a wonderful gift. This box has tons of really good reviews from subscribers so don’t let my preference for dark roasts dissuade you. Plus, when you subscribe to their regular box, you get to choose what your roast preference is.

This is a gift box with lots of variety so the value is in the freshness of the beans, the variety and paired chocolates. While $68 dollars for the gift box isn’t the cheapest, in coffee (as in most things), I think you get what you pay for.

Are you ready to try Bean Box?
