This box always comes with a booklet filled with info on the treats inside, cultural tidbits, and more. This month's theme was Spring Fever.

It includes a product list for each of the boxes they offer. This review is for the Small box, but you can see the other items you can get in the larger subscriptions!

I loved that the booklet included a couple pages that explained various Japanese snacks. It's always nice to learn more about the types of treats you're trying!

Shake Shake Yogurty Fruit Gummies

I'm a fan of gummies so I was excited to see this! I was intrigued by the yogurt packet. The booklet instructs you to shake the gummies in the yogurt powder if you want a "delightful yogurty treat".

On their own, the gummies were decent! They were a little stiffer than the juicier gummies I typically purchase but they smelled sweet and tropical. The insides were pretty soft once you got through the stiff outer texture.

I like that it included an apple flavor (apples are my favorite food!) and the three flavors mixed together was nice - it reminded me of a fruit cocktail cup. The yogurt powder was...interesting. I actually enjoyed the flavor because it added an interesting creaminess to the gummies but the overall experience was a little messy. It was like a teeny tiny fun dip pouch. But it was a totally new candy experience for me so I consider that a win!

Baby Star Panmen Olive & Salt Flavor

When I first tasted these I thought "they're ok" but I just realized that I've been absentmindedly snacking on these for the past 20 minutes! The booklet describes these as "noodle snacks made with bread dough".

The texture of this snack was really light and crispy. It reminded me of other air-puffed chips I've tried. The light texture combined with the mild salt flavor combines nicely with the olive flavor. At first, I read it as olive oil & salt but there is a sharper flavor peeking through. I love olives and chips so this was a dangerously tasty combo for me. I really love putting crunchy bits on top of salads and, if I hadn't crushed this bag, that would have been my next move.

KitKat Baked - Butter Cookie Flavor

I feel like my entire review could have just been "KITKATS" + a bunch of heart eye emojis. I love KitKats so I was definitely pumped when this spoiler came out. I hardly ever actually buy KitKats or Oreos because they do this very weird thing and disappear seconds after I buy them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've tried a few interesting flavors before but I not the butter cookie. This package came with three mini KitKats - 2 fingers in each packet. This is your traditional crispy wafer cookie but I wasn't sure how the butter flavor would be. These were aptly named because this tasted like a delicious butter cookie. The butter flavor is strong but it didn't taste overwhelmingly artificial to me - I can't stand the taste of butter jelly beans but this wasn't anything like that. It really did taste like a butter shortbread cookie, with a wafer cookie inside!

The booklet also suggests popping them in a toaster over for a couple minutes - WHAT?? This is a revelation for me. Am I patient enough to bake KitKats for two minutes before inhaling them? Usually, my answer would be no but I did try this baking trick out on one of my mini KitKats. It makes a delicious gooey mess. I can't imagine making this my regular practice but the thought of broiling a bunch of KitKats for a special occasion makes me laugh so I'm sure I'll try this again someday.

*The rest of these snacks are listed as part of a Dagashi Bag - "4 random dagashi snacks and 1 Umaibo"

7 Sticks Wafers and Chocolate

I like the idea of a grab bag of snacks but the problem comes when you try to figure out what each thing is!

This package contained seven sticks (hence the name) of wafer-like cookies. These cookies had a chocolate filling that also reminded me of something else. I couldn't quite put my finger on it but it was a nuttiness or almost coffee flavor. But it was mostly chocolate that came through.

The closest thing I've had to these are Pirouline cookies but the wafer on these cookies felt a little bland. There wasn't much flavor to the wafer at all but it did provide a satisfying crunch! These are one snack that I didn't love or hate - it was just fine.

Sankaku Vegetable Crackers

It's always nice to break up the sweet treats with a few savory and this month included crackers!

These tiny triangle crackers are vegetable flavored and, while being really small, they packed quite a punch. The vegetable flavor was really strong. It did taste like vegetables but almost like vegetables in a soup. It reminded me of vegetable stock cubes, like when you add a little more to your soup broth than you meant to.

I actually really liked how strong the flavor was and I think this would go great with some cheese or spread. I enjoyed them plain and they made the perfect flavorful afternoon snack.

Lollipop Candy

This lollipop had a very light orange flavor to it. I'm not a huge lollipop fan so this wasn't my favorite but it tasted fine!

The quirky thing about this lollipop is the swirly ring! Instead of a stick, the lollipop sat on top of a plastic spiral. This wrapped around my finger (it was a little tight) and looked a little like an alien finger. It was like a ring pop but with the lollipop shooting out of your fingertips.

Umaibo Shrimp and Mayonnaise

Oh boy. I was excited to see what flavor this was and then I found it....shrimp and mayonnaise. I'm not a huge mayo fan and I don't eat shrimp so I'm not really the target audience for this flavor. The smell of this was pretty strong and was definitely a shrimpy mayo scent.

I could only handle a small taste of this but the texture was so interesting! It was kind of like a huge Cheeto. The flavor wasn't as crazy as I worried it would be but it was still too much for me. The mayo was pretty strong and the shrimp was definitely there too. It kind of tasted like a tuna salad which is so odd to pair with that texture! While this wasn't my favorite flavor combo it was interesting enough to make me curious about all the other flavors available.

Chibeans

The packaging on the Chibeans was so cute!

The flavor of the chibeans reminded me of snap pea crisps. The texture kind of reminded me of snap pea crisps too but these were slightly denser.

These weren't a new flavor or snack to me but they were yummy!

Verdict: I enjoyed tasting all the treats in this month's box - even the ones that weren't my faves. I loved the KitKats, noodle snacks, chibeans, and vegetable crackers. I really didn't like the shrimp and mayo umaibo but it was really interesting. The lollipop and wafer sticks were ok and the gummies were cool. My only real complaint about the TokyoTreats setup is the dagashi mystery treats. Part of the reason I like TokyoTreat is the information about each snack. I was able to find most online but I still prefer an information booklet entry for each item. The box is $14.99 (+ free shipping), which breaks down to $2 an item. I think that's pretty fair, give or take a little on some of the snacks. For me, more of the value comes from the experience instead of the price of each individual item. There were a couple familiar flavors in this box but these were all snacks I would never come across on my own.

What did you think of this month's TokyoTreat?

Excellent review! It finally tipped me over to ordering my first Japanese treats/snacks box. There are quite a few out there, but I went with this one b/c it’s actually sourced from Japan. Of course, that means shipping will be s-l-o-w, but oh well. 😀
