SoChoix-February-2017-Box

So Choix is a new way to try and buy makeup where we bring the makeup counter to you!” So Choix is a makeup sampling subscription service that sends you hand-made samples of brand name, beauty counter products. Each month, subscribers have the options to choose all or a few of their beauty samples or to be totally surprised.

SoChoix-February-2017-Box2

All the samples they send are hand-made from authentic full-size products and brand new sample containers. They use high hygiene standards and never even touch the product itself. This is a process which allows them to send completely uncontaminated products to you, which I really appreciate considering that the lipsticks and products sitting on some stores’ shelves have been touched and poked by hundreds of other people.

You can click here to learn more about how they make their samples.

Chanel Perfection Long-Lasting Concealer – full size: $42

I haven’t tried many Chanel products at all, and I’m sad to say that this lightest shade is too dark. I don’t really know what I was expecting when the lightest shade had the word “beige” in it. I must have added this to my queue without looking too hard at it.  That being said, this formula is alright. It’s creamy and has good coverage, though I can’t speak to the wear time since it was too dark for me to wear.

Tarte Clay Pot Waterproof Liner in Blackened Plum – full size: $21

This eyeliner is an almost-black purple cream liner. This was my favorite sample this month. It’s been a long time since I’ve worn cream liner and I liked the formula and color of this one. I’ve applied it with the brush So Choix provides and a regular angled liner brush, and I definitely have to recommend using your own liner brush if you have it!

GlamGlow Poutmud Fizzy Lip Exfoliating Treatment – full size: $24

I was really excited for this “fizzy lip exfoliating treatment,” but honestly I feel like this is just a normal sugar scrub. You’re supposed to apply, scrub, then add water and scrub more to activate the fizzing, and then rinse. If I’m being honest, the little fizzing I did notice just seems gimmicky. Also, the flavor was really strong. Did it exfoliate my lips and leave them smoother and slightly plumped? Yes, but any sugar scrub will – I won’t be spending $24 on the full size.

GlamGlow Poutmud Wet Lip Balm Treatment – full size: $24

I got this GlamGlow balm to go with the scrub as a follow-up. Again, I’m underwhelmed. It’s definitely a good hydrator for lips but you have to apply very little or else it gets goopy fast, and the color is brighter than I thought it would be and doesn’t look great. I have other sheer tinted balms I prefer.

Yves Saint Laurent La Lacque Couture Nail Polish in Vintage Plum – full-size: $28

I’m glad that So Choix has now added metal mixing balls to their polish samples to help them perform better! It definitely made a difference compared to previous polishes I’ve tried from So Choix. This is also a fantastic find for me. The formula took 1-2 coats for full opacity and is lasting quite some time when used with a base coat and top coat. I’m finishing up day 4 with this polish and I still only have minor chipping.

SoChoix-February-2017-items5

Here’s the concealer and the Tarte eyeliner. You can see that the concealer is just not my shade.

SoChoix-February-2017-items6

Here’s the polish (2 coats, applied with a base and top coat) on day 3! I’m happy with this formula for sure.

SoChoix-February-2017-items7

Here is what the Tarte liner looks like on, applied with an angled liner brush. I like how subtle the purple is but it still has a great affect vs just black liner. You can make a more severe/defined line or smudge it a little to make it a little more subtle, too.

Verdict: Overall, my February So Choix was a little underwhelming. I found a couple products I really like but the other three were busts for me. However, I do have to say that, thanks to So Choix, I’ve been able to try so many brands that are new to me and/or aren’t sold anywhere convenient near me. I love that they often have new releases, too, so I can keep up to date on the newest beauty trends.  It’s hard to do an exact cost-breakdown for this box because of the hand-made samples, but being able to try so many different brand name cosmetics and skincare products plus getting 250 points ($5 store credit) every month feels fun and worth it to me, especially considering my own lifestyle (toddler mom, living far from any kind of access to any of these).

What do you think about So Choix? Have you tried their service before?

So I signed up for 6 months prepaid of this box on March 12. I received an email from them on March 14 that my order was ready for shipment….and then nothing. I emailed them again yesterday because now it’s April, and the answer I received is that they got slammed and had fulfillment issues because of it. Anyone else have trouble getting their subscription? They’re shipping mine now, but I have no idea if this shipment will count for March or for April.
I have to say I’m not exactly impressed with So Choix right now.

I just got a letter that they’re out of business. I also prepaid for 6 months and only received one box. I am livid and there’s no way to get a hold of anybody other than their email. The letter did not include any helpful information about things like reimbursement. They didn’t even include their support email address in the mailed letter.

So Choix is a small company, and it’s not quick to ship orders. But customer service has always been super nice and helpful for me. If you go to your “account details” on the site, it will show exactly when they took your payment. So they will process your next box exactly one month from that date, and every month until you get all 6 boxes. It’s helpful to keep track of your account, so you can make sure to keep your queue ready for next month, see your Points, etc.

This sub has been great for me to try high-end cosmetics to see if they are worth the money. I’ve tried the most expensive items they sell and I can confidently say that most high end brands are not worth the extra money and it has saved me from succumbing to the hype to purchase the trendy brands.

One thing to note, I was down to my last box on a prepaid sub and I didn’t realize that I only had four items in my queue. And that’s what they sent me. I guess I had thought that they would throw in a surprise so that I would get five samples total. I didn’t complain to them because I’ve gotten extra samples in my boxes before and they completely resent one month’s box (due to a shipping snafu – then I ended up getting both) and let me keep it. So make sure your queue is full!

I signed up for the 6 months deal after this review. I am constantly hunting for good samples at Sephora online and it is rare to get foundations samples in fair. I have been wondering how good a $70 concealer can really be…I will soon find out! Thanks for the review!

I’ve had this one on my Maybe Get list for a while, and reviews help so much in deciding which of the many, many boxes on that list to actually get. Once I decide what to drop, sigh.

It is a refreshing change from the usual drama of the other beauty boxes. There are no surprises, you know exactly what’s coming. And some products definitely don’t do well with the small handmade sample sizes (maddening trying to get a decent brush into teeny blushes and powders) but I like supporting a small business with an interesting business model. I would never try brands like Chanel, Armani etc. if it weren’t for So Choix.

I look forward to your So Choix reviews! I just re-subbed on a $60/6 month deal, so enjoy seeing your choices in case you get something I like. I most love trying high end foundations and eyeshadows. I got every speck out of my Chanel eyeshadow, and just put some other colors in my queue. The cute little containers will be perfect for travel.

Haley,
Regarding the polish, do you think its enough for >1 manicure, 1 manicure or <1?

I rely on this sub for travel days/ emergency stash when im out because i love the tiny size without the bulky packaging of traditional samples. And that polish bottle is adorable for fixing a chip on the go too! Would love to have a mini stash of "to go" polishes 😍

I really like this sub and love seeing your reviews because you sample a nice variety each time and for someone who is makeup challenged like myself, its hard to pick samples with their HUGE inventory. I also dont have hours to sift through everything so thanks for highlighting your top picks for us.

Linda, sorry I forgot to mention in the review, but this bottle is enough for one 2-coat manicure, plus touch ups. I don’t think I could have gotten a whole third coat out of it. Not that I should need a third coat of a polish, I’m just saying it was *just* enough for one solid manicure. ☺

Perfect, thank you 😊
