Snakku-January-2017-Booklet

January's box features snacks from Kobe, the sixth largest city in Japan. It is home to cool things like Kobe beef and Arima Onsen, Japan's most famous hot spring resorts.

Snakku-January-2017-Kobe-Bouchee

Kobe Bouchee

These are bouchee sandwich pastry cookies with raisin cream filling. The snack maker, Kobe Fugetsudo, has been making snacks for over 120 years!

The two pastry halves are lightly powdered in sugar. When you bite down it's almost like digging into a slice of cake. I like the raisin and cream combination as well.

L'espoir

These are waffle cookies from Kobe Fugetsudo. They are thin and crunchy, much like waffle cones. The taste reminds me of rich, buttery shortbread. I love these!

Crispy Waffle Sandwich

These are maple syrup-infused waffle cookie sandwiches with a maple cream filling. The most amazing part about this cookie is the aroma. It smells exactly like waffles hot off the griddle and drenched in warm maple syrup. The cookie is light and crunchy like a wafer. The maple cream tastes more like honey to me. This is one of my favorite Snakku discoveries ever!

Kobe Pudding Cookie

These are pudding-flavored langues de chat cookies with a caramel cream filling. They smell delicious, like buttery shortbread. The langues de chat have a sweet, delicate crunch, while the filling adds some silky creaminess.

Snakku-January-2017-Rusks

Morrymama Rusks

Morrymama is a snack shop in Kobe that specializes in rusks, which are twice baked baguettes with a sugar glaze. Snakku included two flavors of rusk: Sugar and Earl Grey. The flavors are not printed on the packaging, but I think the black one is Earl Grey and the white one is Sugar.

This is the Sugar rusk.

This is the Earl Grey rusk. I taste a very slight difference between this and the Sugar one, but both are delicately crunchy and sweet.

Corn Crisps

If you've ever wondered what buttered corn would taste like puffed into a snack, here is your chance! These are deep fried and lightly salted Hokkaido corn. To me, though, they taste exactly like sweet buttered corn that's eaten with my mashed potatoes during dinner. This is one of the most unique Japanese snacks I've ever had!

Snakku-January-2017-Cheese-Pepper-Puffs

Cheese Pepper Puffs

These are rice puffs covered in cheese and black pepper. The cheese tastes like cheddar and the black peppers give it a unique spin on typical puffed snacks. I would gladly buy a family-sized bag of these puffs! They're that addicting.

Mini Rice Crackers

These are mini senbei (rice crackers) covered in a sweet soy sauce glaze. They're deliciously crunchy and simultaneously sweet and savory. Also, everything is better in miniature.

Snakku-January-2017-Bisco

Snakku-January-2017-Bisco-Closeup

Bisco

These are mildly sweet cream sandwich biscuits. The biscuit part tastes like animal crackers, while the filling is a smooth, sweet cream. I do wish there was more cream to complement the biscuits because it is delicious!

Snakku-January-2017-Milk-Candy

Milk Country Candy

These are milk-flavored hard candies. They're made with all natural organic Hokkaido milk. I love milk-flavored sweets, and these really bring out the mouthwatering creaminess of the milk.

Verdict: I had an exquisite tasting experience this month! The curation was amazing. I enjoyed every single snack, but my favorites were the Crispy Waffle Sandwich and Morrymama rusks. Also, I love eating while learning a bit about Japan along the way. There were 22 snacks total for a cost breakdown of $1.77 per snack. This is the value I have come to expect from Snakku.

I have ordered a January box but I have not receive my box nor have I hear back from snakku from my previous email.
It’s already mid February now and this is very unacceptable. I have been looking forward for this box and now I am more than disappointed.

I loved your description of the waffle cookie- hot cakes off the griddle! I was able to imagine the aroma! I just received my box yesterday and I am excited to start digging in today. Shipping does take a long time but that seems to be the trend with shipments coming from Japan or Asia.

Milk flavored candies?!?!? Yuk! Well I can’t really say yuk cause I’ve never really tried one I guess the closest I’ve come to try Milk in a candy is milk chocolate !

haha – I was put off by that too, but I also overall avoid milk so that could have something to do with it.

I always love reading the reviews for this box and love seeing how beautifully packaged it is. I like getting some food/cultural insight!

Nancy, your review, both what you’ve said and the pics, made me put this box on my wish list. Nearly everything looks and sounds delicious, and I’m with you in enjoying learning about a culture different from mine.

I ordered this box in November to give to my brother for Christmas. It didn’t arrive until the second week of January, and you don’t get a tracking number. Customer service was very nice, but I had to drive five hours again to give my brother his present. The furoshiki is a nice touch, but I think they need to change the shipping company. My experience does not seem to rare. My brother loved the box, however.
