Here’s a little more detail about how the process works. (Also, I love their website’s design!)

First, you choose your base, which means you say whether you have natural hair or treated hair.

latherology-october-2016-info2

Then you choose a carrier oil – they have so many options! I also love how you can click each option to see details about it and the benefits it provides. It definitely helps you make an educated choice about what you want the formula to do.

Lastly, you pick your essential oils! You can pick up to two. Again, they have many options and I love learning more about what each oil does in regards to hair care before adding it to my formula.

latherology-october-2016-info4

And that’s it! They also have a featured mix idea, which is sort of what I chose – I picked the bergamot and sweet orange but I chose a sweet almond oil carrier instead of argan.

latherology-october-2016-info5

They also added a new feature that helps you create an “inspired” mix based on how you’re feeling, what scent you like, or what benefits you’re looking for.

latherology-october-2016-info6

I really like this feature – I think it’s a fun way to create new mixes each month and helps you create some expectation about what your mix will be like.

Inside each box is a little info card. One main thing it talks about how their formulas are low-lather because they’re made without harmful sulfates. Good to know – your hair is still getting clean without it!

And each box also includes a little note from your “latherologist” and has the information about your carrier oil and essential oil choices, as well.

Latherology Shampoo – 4 oz

For this review, I was sent the 4-oz bottle package. I think the “No parabens. No sulfates. No regrets.” bit is cute.

Like I said earlier, I chose a sweet almond carrier oil (with a treated hair base), and for my essential oils, I chose Sweet Orange and Bergamot. Sweet almond oil has strength and health benefits, and also helps condition, nourish, and soften hair. Bergamot has a sweet, rich, citrus, tea-like aroma (yum) and is supposed to be normalizing, confidence-boosting, and uplifting while soothing your scalp and adding shine. Lastly, Sweet Orange is refreshing, cheering, uplifting, and moisturizes hair and strengthens roots.

I’ve been using this shampoo (and conditioner) for about a week and I’m really happy with them. I liked my last box from Latherology, but I really love this formula mixture! It is definitely refreshing and uplifting and my hair has felt very clean and soft and hydrated after using it. The minimal lather did take some getting used to for me – I had to play with it a little and learn to trust I was using enough. And I was, because my hair always ended up being clean.

Latherology Conditioner – 4 oz

This conditioner is great, too. My hair has been left feeling strong and hydrated but not heavy or weighed down. My hair has felt great and I’ve found myself looking forward to showering just to use these Latherology products.

On the sides of the bottles, they indicate your mixture and even initial and date when it was made.

Verdict: I really like this Latherology shampoo and conditioner and the way they smell and make my hair feel. I loved the experience of creating the formula and picking the ingredients was fun, too. I think it’s pricier than what many people currently spend on shampoo and conditioner ($15/month for 4 oz of each), so I think that is a factor that narrows their target market to those who really get value out of creating their own formulas, committing to natural hair care, and getting a new formula mixed fresh each month for them individually.

I got my first shipment last week with Tea Tree Oil as the carrier oil and an Argan base. My hair is long and naturally curly. I don’t really do anything too crazy with my hair (mostly because I’m lazy lol) and I’ve never gotten it dyed. Normally I use Pantene products because nothing else has really worked as well for my hair. I got a coupon so I thought I would try Latherology out. After a few days since my first wash, my hair looks and feels SO much more natural. My curls have stayed in longer and my hair fells much thicker. I am totally happy with what I got, but now I want to experiment with other combinations 🙂

Also, to the person saying the shampoos don’t produce much lather, you obviously haven’t had a lot of experience with natural shampoos. The lather you find in commercial products is mostly synthetic and tends to dry out your scalp.

I have been using the Latherology products since their launch and immediately noticed a difference in my hair. Better hydration, less frizz, and softer hair. You really don’t realize what’s missing in your beauty routine until you try it. Customizing my own scent through essential oils is so fun, like creating my own perfume, and allows me the option to listen to my hair and alter benefits between seasons.
A little goes a long way with this product (I have long wavy hair down to my hips) and can tell you that the 4 oz bottles last me 2-3 months. I really don’t know how considering with other shampoo and conditioners I used to use ex: Pantene, Tresemme, Aveeno.. I would easily blow through a bottle in a month, sometimes not even making it through. The Latherology formula you create is thick, strong, and effective calling for a small amount.
My favorite part about Latherology is that they allow me to be in control of what goes into my hair. My signature mix is Lavender and Eucalyptus.
I love Latherology & hope you try it!

Love their products! The essential oils are so fresh, smells so amazing, I’ve never found anything like it. I’m on my 3rd mix. I used the coupon code a few months ago. Hair has never been shinier/healthier. They do tell you that it won’t lather as much, and thats’ true, so be prepared for that. A little goes a long way. I have shoulder length, thick hair, wash & condition 5 times a week & 4 ounces has lasted a month for me. Such a cool concept!

I like the concept but I have a lot of hair and 4oz would only get me 2 washes….

There’s another company with a similar idea called “Function of Beauty” if you’re interested in custom haircare. They sell large sizes though (not a monthly box) and their prices are pretty good. They’ve got a lot of customization options, and I really like the formula I got from them.

Thank you! I think I will check them out. I like the idea of Latherology but I never could get their website to work for me for some reason and I tried two different browsers. Like someone else said, 4 oz would not last me anywhere long enough. I also think it’s funny it’s called Latherology when the formula they use doesn’t lather much at all LOL
