prettyfit-august-2016-bars

Detour Simple Chocolate Chip Caramel Bar (2.1 oz) – Value $2.08

These are low in sugar and high in protein and fiber (actually, the macronutrients are pretty well balanced and there is fat in here, too). They looked really good but according to the ingredients label, they have gelatin, so I had to pass this on to my husband, who enjoyed it. It melted a bit in the summer heat, for what it’s worth.

Purefit Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bar (2 oz) – Value $2.49

These taste delicious and have 18 grams of protein. But, they have almost no fiber and 17 grams of sugars. The first ingredient is brown rice syrup and the third is beet syrup. That is just way too much sugar for me to eat at one sitting so, while I appreciate the chance to try it, I wouldn’t buy these due to the amount of sugar.

Buff Bake Red Velvet Protein Peanut Spread (3 packets x 32 grams each) – Value $5

Buff Bake peanut butters appear in PrettyFit fairly often, both in these packets and the full size jars. I like pretty much all the ones I’ve tried, so I’m happy to get them. I believe I have gotten a Red Velvet one before and enjoyed it. These are enhanced with whey protein and colored with powdered beets (I love that there are no artificial colors). Next week is peanut butter sandwich week for lunch (I have a rotation) and each packet will make the filling for one sandwich! (You can’t buy individual packets of this flavor on the Buff Bake site so I’ve valued these similar to other flavors for which you can buy the packets.)

prettyfit-august-2016-chike

Chike High Protein Mocha Iced Coffee (2 packets x 36 grams each) – Value $4.71

As you may know, I hate coffee. But my husband is a fan, so he volunteered to be the guinea pig here. He enjoyed this. One serving has 20 grams of protein and only 3 grams of sugar, and although there are lots of added vitamins and minerals, they’re in low enough amounts that they won’t conflict with multivitamins. You can also mix a bit of this into a smoothie for a protein boost instead of drinking it straight.

Chike Powdered Peanut Butter (6.2 oz) – Value $6.95

I’ve had this before. It’s pretty much exactly the same thing as PB2 or PBFit (that is, powdered peanut butter from which most of the fat has been removed). As it happens, both my husband and I like PB2 and we were almost out, so this came at a great time.

prettyfit-august-2016-protings

Protings Chili Lime (1 oz) – Value $1.50

Protings Sea Salt (1 oz) – Value $1.50

Protings Zesty Nacho (1 oz) – Value $1.50

These are vegan, non-GMO, and gluten free. The primary protein source is pea protein (15 grams of protein total), and they also have flax. So they are good for you, and they will suit a variety of restricted diets. But, plain, especially the sea salt ones just don’t taste great. (They are OK with hummus.) The chili lime and zesty nacho ones are much better. They really need the added flavors.

prettyfit-august-2016-whey

On 100% Whey Protein in Vanilla Ice Cream (15 servings) – Value $15.99

This is pretty much pure whey protein isolate. Whey is my favorite kind of protein powder because it blends way better than plant-based proteins. This has more than 5 grams of branched chain amino acids in each serving; I find BCAAs particularly good for dealing with delayed onset muscle soreness after workouts. I have been putting this in my morning smoothies and it has been great. Now if I could only convince subscription boxes to send chocolate flavored everything, we’d be all set…

Verdict: I calculated a value of $41.72 for this PrettyFit box. That is kind of a low value for a PrettyFit box (they claim on their site that these items together have a value of almost $62, but I don’t know where they are getting the prices for that list because the values I quoted above are direct from the manufacturers’ own online stores; I do think some manufacturers inflate MSRPs to make it seem like you’re getting a great discount). However, this month seems to be an anomaly for PrettyFit – most of the time, their final values are quite a bit higher (enough so that I would still recommend the subscription). I think the curation was excellent – there were a few old favorites for me (things I needed to repurchase anyway, even) as well as a few new discoveries and overall, I really liked the box.

I would say, by the way, that this is generally a good box for vegetarians (protein bar with gelatin notwithstanding), but probably not for vegans and/or people with nut allergies. (It is so-so for people who need to eat gluten free.) You can preview packs before they ship and change packs for the month or skip one, though, for example if there is fish oil and you are vegetarian or you just want a resupply of something from a past pack, for example.

I’d be happy to see protein powder flavors other than Vanilla. This is my second pretty fit box and my second tub of vanilla powder. Chocolate, cookies & cream, etc. would be nice!!!

I’d actually prefer unflavored protein powder rather than chocolate or vanilla. That way I could add it to a wider range of things without worrying about the flavoring changing the taste too much.

I think that is pretty rare. I have never seen an unflavored powder in all the fitness boxes I receive. I think most of the protein powders I get are designed to be shaken up in water or almond milk or something and drunk as-is, where flavor would be beneficial. Also it may be that the protein powders would be unpalatable without added flavors (especially some of the vegan ones — pea protein powder would be hard to take without *something* added, for example).

You could probably find unflavored gelatin/collagen-based proteins (since unflavored gelatin is an actual thing) but I’m not sure what else is out there.

I tried unflavored pea protein before. It tastes like it should be a construction material, like spackle. It was thick too. It made smoothies thick and tacky. I had to mix a small amount of it with flavored protein powder to drink it.
