Craft-August-2016-Flyers

The Craft Beer Club includes flyers that provide information about the brewing companies and beers featured in the month’s box. This month’s box includes beers from Newburyport Brewing Company and Central City Brewers & Distillers.

On the reverse, the flyers always include “Food for your Brew” recipes and some fun trivia.

Craft-August-2016-Central1

Central City Brewers & Distillers is based in British Columbia, and I think this is the first time I’ve seen Craft Beer Club feature a Canadian brewer!

Craft-August-2016-Central2

Central City Red Betty IPA

This beer is Central City’s most popular offering. It’s a super hoppy IPA that’s made with Magnum, Centennial, Amarillo, and Simco hops. If you feel like there’s no such thing as a beer that’s too hoppy, this might be the beer for you. For me, though, it was a little on the bitter side.

Craft-August-2016-Central3

Central City Red Betty Pale Ale

Luckily, the Red Betty Pale Ale was a bit more up my alley. It’s still very hoppy, but it’s less bitter and is balanced by nice, smooth maltiness.

Craft-August-2016-New1

Newburyport Brewing Co. was founded in 2012 and is based in Newburyport, MA. They’re a relative newcomer on the craft beer scene, but they’d made a splash by being the first brewery in the state to can their entire line of beers.

Craft-August-2016-New2

Newburyport Brewing Co. Melt Away Session IPA

This IPA has lots of the pine and citrus flavors I expect from an IPA, but it’s extremely well balanced. (They’re not kidding when they call this a session beer— I could happily throw back a few of these puppies!) This beer is brewed with Maris Otter base malt and Citra and Amarillo hops. It has a mouth-watering sweetness and a moderate, lingering bitterness.

Newburyport Brewing Co. Plum Island Belgian White

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to open any of these cans! I’m not sure if they’re poorly designed, defective, or just cheaply made, but every single one of the tabs bent and/or broke before puncturing the can. It’s a shame, too, because I was really looking forward to this beer. I reached out to Craft Beer Club about this problem, and they got back to me immediately with word that they would ship replacement cans out to me right away. I’ve yet to receive the replacements, so I can’t comment on the beer, but I’m very pleased with the Craft Beer Club customer service!

Here’s a final shot of the 3 poured beers, all side by side.

Verdict: I always look forward to my monthly shipment from The Craft Beer Club. This box wasn’t great for me, but that’s mostly because I prefer beers that aren’t super hoppy. I know I’m in the minority with this opinion, so I’m sure lots of subscribers are over the moon with this month’s picks. When it comes to value, the cost of each Craft Beer Club box breaks down to just over $3 per beer. While that’s not exactly a steal, I think the price is fair— especially since most of the beers featured in the subscription aren’t available nationwide. I love the convenience of having craft beers sent directly to my door, and it’s so much fun learning about new craft breweries every month!

Just put on a glove,so you don’t accidentally cut yourself, and use a screwdriver or other piece of rigid metal. To gently push on the edges of the opening. It will “give” where the edges meet and open right up for you. You can’t let a good beer go to waste!

Maybe use one of those punch-style can openers? I’d have a hard time letting good beer go to waste!
