Hamptons-July-2016-Booklet

July’s theme is “Modern Grilling.”

Hamptons-July-2016-Info1

Hamptons Lane includes a booklet that details all of the items included in the box.

Hamptons-July-2016-Info2

The booklet also provides recipes and cooking tips.

I also received a card promoting the add-on items for this box.

Optional add-on items include a cookbook, tongs, and salt block cleaning brush.

Hamptons-July-2016-SaltBlock

8" x 8" Himalayan Salt Plate- $19.97

I’ve wanted a Himalayan Salt Block for YEARS, and it’s so funny to me that I got two this month in subscription boxes! (Isn’t it funny how sometimes certain types of products pop up in boxes all at the same time?)

Hamptons-July-2016-SaltBlock2

This block can be heated or chilled to extreme temperatures, and Hamptons Lane provides recipes for how to grill on it. It can also be used as a serving platter.

Hamptons-July-2016-SaltBlock3

Himalayan salt is high in trace minerals, and it provides a more complex flavor than table salt.

Hamptons-July-2016-SaltBlock4

On the Hamptons Lane website, this block is listed with an MSRP of $35, but I found it for sale online for less than $20.

Hamptons-July-2016-BBQ

Mable's Liquid Gold BBQ Sauce - $13

This smoky and sweet sauce hails from Brooklyn BBQ joint Mable’s Smokehouse. Hamptons Lane suggests using it to make Salt Block Duck Skewers, which sound absolutely incredible!

Hamptons-July-2016-Pineapple

Jamaican Jerk Pineapple Chutney by Wozz! Kitchen Creations- $10

Caribbean flavors of pineapple, jerk heat, peppery ginger, mint, and spices come together in this flavorful chutney. It can used on burgers, grilled fish, and even in salad.

8" Bamboo Skewers- $1.19

I always keep bamboo skewers stocked in my kitchen, so I’m not super excited to see them included in this box. I would have preferred something a little bit more special, I think, and maybe something reusable like the FireWire Flexible Grilling Skewers that were included in last year's grill-themed box from Hamptons Lane. Also, I’m a little annoyed to see these valued at $4.50 on the Hamptons Lane site. I found the same skewers online for $1.19 (or $0.34 per pack when bought in bulk).

Salt Block Salad!

Caprese salad is one of my favorite summertime dishes, so I decided to try making one on my new salt block! I layered slices of heirloom tomato with fresh mozzarella and basil, and I dressed the salad with olive oil, balsamic nectar, and freshly ground pepper.

Hamptons-July-2016-Recipe1

According to the Hamptons Lane recipe I used, the longer the tomatoes sit on the block the saltier they’ll be, and Hamptons Lane recommends letting them sit for 3-5 minutes for optimal seasoning.

Hamptons-July-2016-Recipe2

I let them sit on the block for probably about 5 minutes before my husband and I transferred the salad onto plates, and I thought the block added a nice mineral taste and the perfect level of saltiness. Unfortunately, my husband thought the salad was too salty. (Full disclosure: I love salt. A lot. And I definitely prefer my food to be more heavily seasoned than my husband does. For anyone who can’t handle a lot of salt, I’d recommend using caution when using the block as a serving platter! Food gets salty fast!)

Hamptons-July-2016-Recipe3

Perhaps next time I’ll try using the block for serving something like cheese and olives. I think the liquid from the tomatoes helped the salt transfer into the salad much more quickly than it would with drier foods.

Verdict: I really like my new salt block! I had a lot of fun using the block as a serving platter, and I’m excited to explore other ways to use it. Most months, I feel that Hamptons Lane sends a lot of  medium to lower value items, and this box felt a bit different. The salt block is definitely the “hero item” of the box, and there are definitely fewer items than usual. I’m excited to use the BBQ sauce and the chutney, but I’m a little disappointed by the inclusion of bamboo skewers. To me, they seem like an uninspired choice. That said, I’ll certainly use them. If I were to purchase all of the items in this box separately, it would cost about $44.16. That’s one of the lowest box values I’ve seen from Hamptons Lane. I’m sure shipping for this box isn’t cheap (salt blocks are heavy!), but I’d still like to see the value meet the cost of the box.

Nice review, and you bring up a good point. I used to subscribe to this and a couple of other lifestyle boxes but feel a lot of them artificially amplify their prices to make it look like a great value. For instance, in a past box they had a sauce listed for $28 when everywhere else, including the manufacturer, had a retail price of $16. I wanted to buy another bottle and end up finding it for $12 on Amazon. In this day and age they must know we can easily research so why be deceptive? I factor in curation and shipping when I look at value but also honesty.
