Dylan's Candy Bar ships all chocolate products with warm weather shipping protection during the summer, which is great for those of us living in hot climates. I received my shipping notification on a Thursday, and didn't receive my box until Monday, so (I'm assuming) it sat in a truck or a warehouse over the weekend. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but this is chocolate, and it's been 114 some days here. Unfortunately, even with the warm weather protection, several of my items arrived melted. When I received my box the ice packs were hot and leaking, and the inside box itself was hot to the touch.

DCB5

The s'mores treat and the peanut butter cups both came melted. My peanut butter cups were unrecognizable as peanut butter cups. So I contacted customer service. They asked me to send pictures of the melted items, and said they would ship me replacements (10 days ago now). I still haven't received my replacements, but I look forward to being able to try them! I was told they will arrive on Monday, July 11th, which worries me a bit - sounds like they're going to sit for at least a day in a warehouse - we'll see if they come intact!

Just know when you receive a melted item from this box, you have to email or call customer service within 24 hours of your delivery, and you have to provide pictures. They will only replace the melted items, not the whole box. I completely understand this from a business prospective, but it can be a little frustrating to have to go back and forth with pictures and such to replace an item or two.

Dylan's Candy Bar - Dark Chocolate - $3.25

This didn't come melted and it was delicious! I am a dark chocolate fan, so I really enjoyed this. The dark chocolate was smooth and just the right amount of sweet and bitter.

Dylan's Candy Bar - S'mores Treat - $5.00?

I can't find this item on the site, but here is a similar treat. This was one that came melted. I did try a little bit of it since it wasn't as melted as the peanut butter cups. S'mores are the quintessential summer time treat, so this was perfect to include! I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

DCB7

Dylan's Candy Bar - OMG's Vanilla Almond - $16.00?

This is an exclusive item for the Welcome chocolate candy box, which is a real bummer because these are insanely delicious! To me, it tasted like white chocolate covered Biscoff cookies. I am definitely going to try to recreate this at home, since they aren't for sale on the website. Plus, how cute is this little bin? I'll tell you one thing though, I definitely didn't need the candy tongs - couldn't wait that long to get the next piece in my mouth! The chocolate on these came melted, but I didn't realize this until I had already contacted Dylan's for my replacement for the other items.

Dylan's Candy Bar Truffle Cups - Peanut Butter - $4.00

These are in such bad shape that I can't even really try them. The chocolate is melted all around the packaging and separated from the peanut butter. I hope my replacements come in good shape so I can try them...truffle cups sound delicious!

Verdict: With the 3-month subscription, this box comes out to about $40.00 a month. The value of this box is approximately $28.25 - which is disappointing. I know that part of that $40 covers shipping, but $11.75 is quite a bit for shipping in the sub box world! The items I received seemed to be of high quality, but even if you break it out to $40 for 4 items, each item would be $10, and I'm not certain that's worth it!

With that said, I did enjoy all of the items in the box, so if you're looking for a good chocolate subscription and aren't looking for an awesome value, maybe give this one a try.  I'm curious to see what the next few months bring!

Bekki first discovered subscription boxes in 2014 and they quickly took over her life! (Not quite, but pretty close.) She started with POPSUGAR Must Have, then moved to Little Lace Box, Birchbox, Hamptons Lane...the rest was history. Her favorite product find is Beekman 1802 Fudge (so, so good) and her favorite boxes are Birchbox and Hamptons Lane...but she's always looking for a new subscription to try!

The last box review was eye opening. And this made my eyes pop right out of my head. They need to get a customer service course because clearly your paying for something else then chocolate and sadly packed shipping. I don’t know if I said what I ment but it sounds right in my head. Great review …..Really and honestly said . Thank you.

What a shame… Definitely three counts against it: the price for what you actually get, the shipping, and the delay in replacement. For the cost, I think I’d just order something yummy from an independent artisan shop.

The Dylan’s stores are so much fun inside! I wish more of that fun/whimsy carried over to the subscription.

I own an artisan chocolate company in CO and it is definitely possible to ship in heat. I just shipped to Miami and the package arrived safely, you just have to be smart about it. While $12 for shipping is high, I will say that the thermal bubble wrap is very expensive. I only ship on M or Tues so I know my packages will never be in a warehouse over the weekend…that’s just asking for trouble. I would be very disappointed in this box. For that price, the items were pretty small and weren’t many of them. Shame- I’m always rooting for chocolate companies…not the Dylan’s needs any help from me!! : )

I subscribe to Treatsie’s, and last month ordered extra chocolate bars with my monthly order. While it didn’t get that hot here in CO, it did get into the upper ’90s. We had moved and the box had to be forwarded, and it therefore took an extra week or so to get to me. Not only did nothing melt, but because of the excellent way they packaged it (the cardboard box in between several cooling packs inside of a silver package and then in a larger box), the interior cardboard box was still slightly cool to the touch. So yes, chocolate can be received unmelted. With that experience in mind, I can’t see subscribing to this box.

No reason to even consider ordering this. Let’s face it, chocolate is going to melt in the summer even when you have protective measures in place. To ask your customers to put up with getting less than what they paid for money wise, and then getting melted chocolate, and then proving you got melted chocolate with photographs and THEN waiting ages for a replacement is just ridiculous. I’d always heard Dylan’s Candy Bar was a great place but they have no clue with sub boxes, clearly. If they can’t afford to make the boxes an equal value or better value to the price paid, they won’t be competitive in the sub box world. They should regard box contents as a loss leader because it will bring new business to them. It’s clear they do not understand this so I can’t see how this will work.

This might work if it was only offered in the cooler months like Graze does, they could do gummy/fruit/hard candy year round.

Something like this should only be sent out on a Monday and as a 2 day priority (at most) so there would be no chance of it sitting around on a weekend– and especially for that (approximated) shipping cost. It’s summer and I would have to think that others received their contents in equally sad shape…

Delilah

Right, for how much they charge they should send 2 day priority. I’ll stick with going to Zee’s candy store….

Did your box include any kind of cold pack or anything? The foil oven package seems like it would accelerate the melting process before preventing it. I’m surprised that a company that is charging SO much for the product (and i’m assuming ships product on its own), doesn’t have a good handle on preventing weather damage to their goods. Seems like a huge waste of money on their end to not take proper preventative measures and have to replace loss.

I don’t see any reason why anyone would get this box. Why not just order what you want? And is their chocolate exceptional enough that you cannot get something similar at a local store and avoid all melting issues?

Carrie

No. I’ve been to their store and the items in store are overpriced for what they are. There are just better candy stores around, especially at the price. So while I’m bummed that the box is a bust, I’m not surprised.
